Steve set his team up to fail - shit gibbon.

To me it was just a bad design overall.  The skull was fine, the woman's face was fine but that demon at the back looked bad.  It looked bad on the stencil and bad on Steve's tattoo.

Not much else to say, everything else was pretty straight forward.

Juan and Josh are locks for the final imo. I really like Deanna and she's exceeded all my expectations after a bit of a shaky start (her freehanded woman was amazing) but I just don't see her as a finalist. Pretty close call between Roly and Jason. I'd probably say Jason gets the nod as I sometimes find Roly's designs a little boring. In a fair fight I'd like Steve's odds against anybody, but without any advantages the coaches' faceoff is going to be a tall order. Right now I'd guess that Anthony takes it--he seems to have gotten a positive edit whereas DJ and Steve are constantly shown screaming at people.

I think Deanna may have a better sense of design overall than the other remaining artists.  Her freehanded tattoo was great.  However, I don't think she has the depth of tattooing experience to make it to the final.  Her comment on never having done (or being familiar with the mask ?) highlighted this.  I kind of miss the old formulaic American traditional week, Japanese week, portrait week format that put all the contestants through their paces at the same time. Yeah, it got stale, but I felt I had a better sense of what the artists could really do compared to what they say they can do.

I don't think it was stale at all. I also think it made for a much more interesting competition. I am finding the "here's a weird assed subject to tattoo" thing a really bad change.

I love Deanna, and I think she has a great future, but I agree that she's getting by on artistic talent right now. She needs more tattoo experience.

I don't think Anthony can help but get a good edit, tbh. I don't think he gives them anything else to work with. Having seen how he interacts with a household of kids when he was doing Facebook Live after his win, I think he is just that emotionally together and relaxed.

I am pulling for Juan, because he's the best on Anthony's team. Josh deserves to win, but I can't stand him or DJ, so I can't root for him.

Anyway, I am happy with the season overall.

@TVbitch, Deanna is the only Angels winner left. Daniel, Sparks and Rachel were the others.

I didn't mind this episode - I echo the others that Deanna's freehand tattoo was fantastic - but what's killing me about this season is that other than Anthony, the coaches they picked were awful. Steve and DJ are good tattooers, but they just aren't good coaches. There is a difference between doing a line drawing that challenges your team (like Anthony did) versus one they won't be able to produce (like Steve did). And he knows he fucked up with that drawing, because he immediately got defensive when called out about it. Anthony hit the nail on the head when he said you always have to coach your team; I know Steve doesn't like Jeremy, but to give him no guidance when Jeremy asked for his opinion was shitty.

I really want to hate Josh, and I feel confident that I wouldn't want to live in the Ink Master house with him, but I really like how supportive he is to Deanna as a team mate. That's been going on for a couple weeks now, which makes me think he's not a total asshole, but knows he was cast to be a troublemaker and is giving the producers what they want.

Jason has been in the bottom the last 2 episodes, and to keep the teams even I see a red head leaving next week, it will either be Jason or Deanna.

I think DJ is getting the edit to win, he hasn't won a single tattoo challenge against the other coaches all season, but they will give him the finale win.

Here's what I don't get - you're given a challenge to draw something freehand on a canvas that is totally open to whatever you want to do. No restrictions from the judges either. So given free rein, why would Roly choose to draw something he clearly doesn't understand the anatomy of?!

You can draw literally anything - pick something you actually understand!

Exactly! And this also goes to why I think Steve is kind of a shit judge - why the hell wouldn't he tell Roly that? I also think DJ is a terrible judge, but at least when Deanna said she was going to freehand something that she did all the time, he agreed it was the right way to go.

I think Steve has given up and does not think he could win either of his remaining team members, so he has no fucks left to give. It this is his attitude then he should have never signed up to be a coach. His demon face on the back was whack as hell.

I agree. Remember pin-up week and how that really separated the good from the bad.

Josh seems like a smart guy who knows he is better than his coach. He really should dial back the jerkiness but his talent is undeniable.
