S02.E04: Trial Of The Century

Oh Bea, you don't have to hide your brilliance just because Fredrick, king of the lawyers, is around.

Who knew that Hamish had this very specific talent which can be used to manufacture an alibi and ruin faithful marriages.

I think Hamish should go on a famous murderers tour with Lizzie Borden.

Something they're doing differently this season is spreading the cast out a lot more.  I'm wondering if it was a budgetary thing; it's probably difficult to pay out such a sprawling cast, so they just leave characters out of certain episodes entirely.  And it gets even harder when you have guest stars in the episodes, which is nearly every week.  Something tells me Dodo is going to return a lot better than ever, but I still miss her.  And nuHortense has had what, 5 lines since the premiere?

But I did love the episode in spite of that.  Glad to see the return of Hamish, and the ever-crude Mark Twain.  Nice twist with Hamish being the Commodore's brother, it adds to the hilarious soapiness of the show.

Much as I loathe him, Perez Hilton as the paparazzi was a clever touch.  I'm guessing those women were supposed to be Hamish's groupies?

The whole trial just got more and more awesomely ridiculous the more it went on.  Between Fredrick being the judge (the "King of Lawyers!"), to having Beatrice take over while he went to the bathroom, to Mark Twain as the worst defense attorney ever!  I was laughing throughout it all.  But I loved the brief moment of seeing Beatrice actually had an interesting idea about categorizing different types of murder.  I do like the moments where you can see that is someone insightful, underneath all the craziness and immaturity.

Looking forward to seeing Hamish back out on the free world, and what kind of chaos he will cause (especially towards Chair, I would think.)  Liked the twist that he's actually the Commodore's brother.  Brett Gelman had some great reactions shots throughout the entire trial.

Peepers busting out his life-savings for one ravioli is so Peepers!

Enjoyed seeing the two policemen again.

The whole Charles Mason Girls reference with Hamish's groupies was so unexpected.  I love those moments when Bea shows there's brilliance underneath her usual vapid stupidity.

It's weird how much I enjoy Chair but can't stand Hamish.  Both are villains but Chair is more entertaining to me.

I'm going to miss Hamish's cell mate.  They need to bring him back.

I loathe Hamish - I was kinda hoping he'd disappear in jail. Hamish in this show is like watching a racy burlesque show and suddenly you cut to a scat porn orgy in the middle of it and then try to cut back. He's a turd in the punch bowl. He's so gross and creepy and rapey. At least everyone else's ridiculousness is ridiculous. Hamish's creepy is too real-feeling, imho.

This was absurd even for this show. I liked the switch where Hamish was kind of the straight man until he totally flipped.

Oh, wow, the "I killed Scoops LaPue" ended on a twisted punch line.

I can totally by it too. She switches from super insightful and smart to wacko in a millisecond.

I have no idea why Peepers was eating at a restaurant. It kills me how MIB makes everything so pompous.

Piaget Brewster was probably shooting Grandfathered at the same time, but I hope she is in this more.

Dodo was pure gold last season.  Will she push out the evil Chair and claim her rightful position? I remember the first season where she told Frederick and Beatrice:. "What are you doing lawn boating? Afternoons are for defecating and learning Latin."  Maybe it's my Brit heritage that gives me my gravitation towards toilet humor. So far she's just been shown as a strung out junkie with no classic Dodo lines.

Finally Lillian brought out Mayor Cutie...who actually is her real life pet in this episode. I love the way she dresses up that dog, who is like her accessory.

Hamish grosses me out...but the role is well played.

So Beatrice isn't the only sister who has committed incest!!  Though at least it wasn't purposeful on Lillian's part.

Oh, Peepers.  I was starting to think Dodo might have a rival in his heart after that cheese grating scene!
