S02.E04: Happy Birthday to Me

Recommended Posts

When I get sort of into shows, it usually takes a lot to shake me off - I'll stick with them until they become unbearably bad. This show is approaching that point much faster than I thought was possible. What in the actual fuck was this episode even?

But yeah, the reveal at the end seems to imply that the season is finally starting, so I guess I'm staying for a bit more. And I'm still somehow convinced that they're all ultimately doomed except dark horse Brooke.

So did someone attack Emma or not?

Seriously, we need bodies to start dropping, this is Scream after all. At least everyone FINALLY knows Jake is dead

Yes, FINALLY. Hopefully more characters will start dying. Sequels of horror movies are supposed to be bloodier than the first.

I have been watching this and not hating it, but after the predictable Piper reveal last season, I'm not as invested in figuring out who the killer is this time. I guess we can rule out Audrey, though.

I still like Audrey. I still like Brooke. Noah is kind of annoying this year. Kieran is dull as dishwater. Branson is an idiot. The shifty new characters are shifty. I don't have much to say about this show because it's boring because only one main character has died and it took four episodes for everyone to find out about it. I don't want to watch a generic teen show where a body drops once or twice a season. Give me my slasher show, dammit!

The first season of this was a mess, but it at least had a certain amount of pluck and charm to it. These four episodes? Are just nothing. I love a good so-bad-it's-good slasher flick, but this isn't even close to qualifying, despite the godawful performances and major issues with pacing.

I don't know that I've ever felt more sorry for an actor than I do for Tom Everett Scott in his so-my-career-has-come-to-this glorified cameo. He's not a great actor by any means, but his scenes with Emma are just painful.

It also seems like the show runners are telegraphing the killer already. The two red herrings are obvious, and I honestly don't think the writing is strong enough to execute having Noah pull a long con on Audrey... Though that would at least be kind of an interesting twist.

And I agree with the rest: We're 4 episodes in and have offed 1 main-adjacent character and 1 ancillary character. Way past time to pick up the pace with the body count!

I was actually suspecting this a couple episodes ago. The way Noah kept bringing up Piper's accomplice when Audrey was around, and always having another clue just seemed like he was messing with her. But they seemed to have dropped that thread.

What the heck have they done to my show?!?! What in Sam Hill was that whole hallucination nonsense? What was with Noah and Audrey GOING THERE? When do things get scary again??

I will laugh and cry if the Boy Meets World Halloween episode where there is a killer in the school is scarier than next week.

Can ghost face kill Emma her acting is so wooden it is painful to watch, I cringe every time she is on screen. I am much more interested in what in the hell is going on with Audrey.

I agree we need someone to die soon this season the kills are not coming fast enough!

Oh yeah, the Noah and Audrey thing was stupid. I don't buy for one second that Noah secretly has feelings for Audrey. I don't buy it one little bit.

This. I thought the whole thing was clearly an "on drugs and horny" situation and I didn't think Noah seemed to have any longing for Audrey after. He was uncomfortable, naturally and curious about her saying she was sorry but I didn't see any romantic tension. Personally I think the girl may be bisexual and has decided, after the three-way makeout session that she's into Audrey and so she used that lame excuse to check out on Noah.

It is ridiculous how much they're dragging shit out this season. Taking four episodes to reveal Jake's death and make everyone realize he is dead was just ridiculous. And yeah, what is up with the lack of murders and hell scary tension. Has anyone but Jake been threatened in any way since the season started? I guess there was that moment of Emma running out of the creepy house but other than that, whatever.

The new characters are all awful. Eli is okay, even if the actor looks ridiculously young but the writers are making him such an obviously manipulative little shit that you know he'll either likely end up dead or the guilty one. And that sucks because I think the actor has way more chemistry with Emma than duller than dirt Kieran. He at least looks like he has a fucking pulse. I honestly would really like to know if someone is truly directing the actor playing Kieran to play the character this way or this is really his own interpretation because WOW... Dude has ONE fucking tone, ONE fucking expression, it's just so unbelievably boring. And then you have the actress playing Emma who is no great thespian, so the two of them together is just torture.

Personally, for right now I am actually going with Noah as the killer and the one messing with Audrey. Someone above noted that they seem to drop that storyline of him searching, but I think that was just for this episode. Because Jake's murder will prove there is another killer and it would not be the least bit suspicious to have him doggedly back on proving that Piper had an accomplice. If it is him, I can see the rationale being that all the trauma of the previous year fucked with his head and made him all obsessed about it and in that obsession, he figured out Audrey was working with Piper. Seems a stretch but it'd certainly be way more interesting and far less obvious than dumb looking broody sheriff's son or Eli or hell even new chick because it's just too easy to make it a new character. Personally I'm still rooting for Kieran to be guilty, only because it'll mean he'll go away.

Finally, I am curious to know the extent of Audrey's involvement with Piper. At the end of the first season, I was sure it was just a red herring and she'd just written to Piper, with no idea who Piper really was and no idea that she was the killer. But she was getting rid of the letters so someone wouldn't think she was an accomplice. However, her panic and the things she's done to keep her secret, makes me think she was in way deeper than that.

Agreed, S1 was bad, but at least a fun enough, dumb slasher show to keep it going.  This season is just dragging on and on about something we already know and are waiting for the characters to catch up, and it's more frustrating than entertaining at this point.

Did anyone else notice the beginning, when Emma's texting Kieran, and his text back to her is sent at 3:32pm? And yet, she's still leaving for school? Come on editors, now you're just slacking.

So, Eli likes Emma. Why? He's actually marginally more interesting than Kieran, so why Emma? Boy, you made the wrong decision.

Noah/Audrey? How cliche and uncharacteristic of the characters. It better not actually go in that direction.

The Stavo/Brooke/'Jake' foot-rubbing scene was so freaking weird. All of the hallucination scenes were weird.

At least the ending might set some things in motion. Plus, Carrie homage. Love it.
