S01.E14: Josh Is Going To Hawaii!

Recommended Posts

Just rewatched again today. So many funny little moments, like when Rebecca is asking Paula if she's broke and keeps poking her in the arm saying, "Paula? Paula? Paula?"

LOL, this was probably my favorite part as well. Especially since, I'm not proud to say, I'm also an Ivy League educated, successful attorney who's embarrassingly clueless and irresponsible when it comes to practical financial issues. (To my credit, I know how a lease works.)

My other favorite part was Rebecca's agonizing over the red panda: "Maybe I'll just print it out and send it anonymously...???"

I could speculate that Rebecca's financial woes are the result of Trent's hacking in a crazy ex-boyfriend (no, he's not!) scheme to win her over.

As much dough as she was making at her NY job, I would think that she'd still have plenty socked away.

Well, she basically said she had no concept of money, so I could believe that she was spending her NY salary almost as fast as she made it -- going out to dinner all the time, expensive condo, theater, trips, etc.

If Rebecca's so broke that her car payments weren't being made, I'm surprised she hasn't been evicted yet either!

Is there any chance she bought her West Covina townhouse/condo? Cause otherwise, yeah, seems like she'd be behind on both payments.

Though if you want to apply realism, it can be slower to evict someone than to repossess their car.

That's true. I wonder if the next step is that she gets evicted and she has to go live with Paula or...hey, how does Heather afford to live in the same complex when she's only had short-term stints in service roles? *brain breaks* haha

As much dough as she was making at her NY job, I would think that she'd still have plenty socked away.

Especially since she should have a bunch of extra money due to not making her monthly car or rent payments - those two alone would add up!

I seem to recall Rebecca saying she had bought her place in one of the early episodes, but I could be remembering that incorrectly. It does take a while to evict someone though. When I worked at an apartment complex, we couldn't do anything until a tenant hadn't paid their rent for at least three months in a row (which almost never happened because it was in a pretty nice area). After that, there is legal paperwork that has to be filed, etc. But I will say that no one would be oblivious to it because once the rent was a week late, we sent them a reminder just in case they had forgotten.

As for how Heather pays her rent with seemingly only part time jobs, I wouldn't be surprised if her parents were paying for her expenses. Normally I would also assume she had some sort of financial aid through school but it's a lot harder to get enough to pay your rent when you're at a community college.

Ha, true. The list of things we know about Heather so far:

  • she is Rebecca's neighbor
  • she doesn't know her other neighbors or talk to them
  • she was taking an abnormal psych class at community college when she met Rebecca
  • she worked as an elf at the mall during the holiday season
  • she dated Greg
  • now she works at the baseball bar with Greg

So yeah, for all we know, she lives with her parents, she's squatting in that place, her grandmother used to live there but died and left it to her, she's secretly an heiress to a paperclip fortune and doesn't have to worry about money, she robbed a bank and uses the money to finance her lifestyle, etc. Who knows? I'm not saying I necessarily want the show to focus on her, but of all the secondary characters on the show, she's the one we know the least about. I mean, she's included in the little drawing in the opening credits but I feel like we know more about White Josh at this point.

As flaky as Rebecca apparently is with money, I don't think she skipped those payments because she was preoccupied. I suspect she had those on automatic payments and the bills went unpaid because she ended up emptying her checking account.

I like to imagine that Rebecca spent all her fancy lawyer money on oddball feminist classes, like How to Buy Expensive Feminist Pajamas.

Paula's abject despair when Rebecca thought she could sell her leased car was probably my favourite Paula moment yet.

Paula's expressions were pretty funny.  I love the actors for Paula and Greg.

I didn't like the songs that much.  nosleepforme nailed it:

But nothing quite beats the emotional punch of the "Don't Settle for Me" and "Textmergency" - episodes. Those were Crazy Ex-Girlfriend at its best (IMO).

Just noticed...the "Welcome to West Covina" poster that is in the picture at the top of this article, it looks more like a picture of Hawaii right?

In terms of how Rebecca is getting paid, I always felt that Whitefeather and associates was more of a non-profit type of place than an actual firm-firm. I could be just thinking that based on the work habits of the employees shown, but just a feeling. And not taking the original settlement offer, regardless of her original feelings on the matter, turned out to be the right move considering there were deeper pockets involved and a much bigger suit. The unrealistic aspect is that Rebecca, as the attorney, cannot unilaterally turn down an offer, she has to present it to her clients, she can urge against it, but she has to at least give her clients the information and the option.

They seem to have typical private firm clients, like Calvin, and those guys who overheard Rebecca call them the "stupid clients" (who wanted to buy an expensive property).

It just isn't a particularly impressive private firm.
