Month of Zen: Saying Good-bye

Recommended Posts

Looking back at old correspondents, it's interesting to see which ones never returned as guests, even when they would have projects to promote.

Matt Walsh, Rachael Harris, Dan Baakedahl, Nate Corrdry, and Olivia Munn never came back, and Ed Helms was only a guest once, in 2009.

Obviously TDS doesn't have as many guest slots as the other late-night shows, but you'd think if they wanted to appear they'd be able to have a slot for them.

So I know I started watching in late 2002 - What I didn't realize is it must have been the exact episode they stopped doing "Headlines." I don't remember that segment at all.

It is definitely hard to watch things like Jon mocking Whitney's drug abuse.

Oddly enough it was harder for me to watch Bea Arthur and The Crocodile Hunter guest star the other day. Maybe it was Whitney seeming so indignant about it? I was laughing right along with the audience. Kinda nuts that Robert Downey Jr. was being mocked alongside her in the interview, by 'movie star' Rob Schnieder no less.

There have been quite a few people who passed on episodes that have been hard to watch.... but I guess for me Whitney was the one being awfully mocked. I don't know but the show seems a bit more hateful and sexist circa 2002 (and that really just may be borne of personal feelings).

Oh it's not a personal thing. The show is definitely more hateful and sexist around this time. It's a little jarring and very telling - It still had one of the more progressive voices of this time.

Yeah, that's like the suicide joke about Anna Nicole Smith (who ODed, which is the next best thing to suicide).

That's the first Frank DeCaro piece I've ever seen. I'm surprised it carried on so far into Stewart's run; it doesn't fit with the rest of the show at all.

I hate that I can't watch this show while I'm at work. Because, I'm at work!

I just wanna know when Asif Mandvi's first episode was. Or did I miss it?

Haven't missed it yet. Aasif's first piece was from August 9, 2006. Jon pronounces Aasif's name wrong twice I think. Interview with Aasif about it.

ETA: Bruce Springsteen was watching the rehearsal for Aasif's first show.

Oh God.

"Freedom Fries."

Not to mention the waste of good French Wine.

Love Lewis Black's take on that bit of idiocy.

ETA:

I love Chris Rock.  That is all.

So that was what?  March 31, 2003?

Heck, in 2003 Rock was still pretty funny, even if his movie about a black presidential candidate wasn't.  And heh.  That's another cultural relic isn't it--a silly "outrageous" movie about a black candidate (who gasp! Spoiler Alert! Wins!).

They were two different episodes, but yeah, around that time.

Canali clothing? Never heard of them. So many different companies.

Jon Stewart is the gayest of all gays is a joke they're using in this segment with Rob Corrdry. What a difference 12 years makes.  Also, Rob is a great correspondent. Channeling Colbert it seems.

Ed Helms is doing a segment on the Free Porn for our Troops guy. It's not that funny at all, but Ed Helms isn't awful.  Randy Jackson is the guest. Ugh.

I think they're still a fairly big deal.  It's just that most of us can't afford them. Or even bother wearing Italian made suits.

Apparently Jon changed clothiers to Ralph Lauren around 2006.  We have that to look for now (when that title card changes).

I love him too. But honestly? Colbert is my all time favorite correspondent, along with Aasif Mandvi.

I just want to shoot my computer whenever I see Ed Helms. He is so not funny.

I've blanked a LOT of the election stuff of 2004 out of my mind, but was it really a given that Bush would win? Because if not, then Colbert's prediction that he would...wow.

I was flummoxed, no, flabbergasted when I watched that interview with Diane Ravitch? about the language policing. Makes me glad I was a kid when I was a kid.

Now I'm going to try and sneak and watch some more episodes.

My husband was really amazed how good Carrel was. We missed his tenure initially. He's definitely up there. I'm surprised I haven't seen a Sam Bee episode yet. I like Ed Helms too Victor, he's had some bad pieces though. There was a Rachael lady that I don't remember anyone ever talking about.

I hate the couch. It looks boxy and uncomfortable, and doesn't seem to fit with the set.

ETA: Spoke too soon, here's Sam Bee. A segment called We <3 Showbiz with Rob Corddry. Was this a replacement for the Frank Decaro segment? I'm so glad TDS got rid of stuff like this.

That said, let's please move on from the topic. Thank you.

Rachael Harris, I mentioned it earlier in the thread. She's been in loads of stuff as an actress, but I never knew she was on TDS. She was only there for a year or so though.

It's really interesting. I first saw both Lewis Black and Aasif Mandvi when they appeared on Law & Order.  Black as a porn movie director, and Mandvi played different characters and appeared on ALL of the franchises--mothership, SVU, Crimninal Intent, AND Trial By Jury. Oh, and the first Spiderman movie.

I never realized they were comedians, heh, until I saw them on this show.

It's weird that a live interview with John Edwards was such a huge get back in 2003.

For realzies. I remember when even ET was kissing up to him, saying he was the next President waaay before, I think in 2002? And all I could think was, who is this guy? And why does everyone think he's so hot? It reminded me of how everyone gushed over how "handsome" Dan Quayle was. Blech. Some compared him to Robert Redford!

I think the bigger get was him announcing his presidential campaign on The Daily Show.  What a squandered career. September 15, 2003 right now guys. Cuba Gooding Junior is the guest. Remember him?

I'd forgotten the announcement, until it happened. Cuba was great in a recent CC show, Big Time in Hollywood, FL. He's playing OJ in a terrible-looking Ryan Murphy FX series this year too.

Ahh, the first commercial for the Colbert Report. I wish I could've seen the look on everyone's faces when they realized people were taking it seriously.

You know all of the "What is Stephen going to do on Late Nite!" yammering seems to forget that the Daily Show version of him operated for years without really being that Colbert Report version of "Stephen Colbert" (not that there weren't elements of that character, just not the whole thing). It may not be fresh in people's minds, but this marathon has I suppose reminded the few watching it.

Oct 1, 2003.

Wow. I tuned right into the Valerie Plame story.  That's random!  They have a wacky bit with Steve Carell in a Tuxedo doing a (deliberately) bad pseudo-James Bond as The Daily Show "Intelligence Correspondent".  Sign of the times, they mostly refer to her as "Ambassador Wilson's wife".

Also in the news: It's the exact day the Do Not Call List Registry is supposed to take effect but people are challenging it.

Vivica Fox visits and is really annoying, but talks about being in Kill Bill, Part I.

They tease an Ed Helms piece for the next day's show and so I am determined maybe to skip it.

Hmm.  I guess I didn't have to worry about seeing Helms on that episode.  They skip over the Oct 2 show and go right to Oct 6.  Odd.

First in the news on Oct. 6--the California recall election between Gray Davis and Arnold Schwarzenegger.

Hilarious clip of Dee Snyder singing "We're Not Gonna Take It", while Ahhhhnold head bangs.  Cut to Gray Davis' rally with Jessie Jackson struggling to say "Schwarzenegger".

Damn! I missed it!

I don't remember exactly when, but they'll replay it. It strikes me how often the show used to replay segments. I'd forgotten since it's practically rare nowadays.

He's already released a few videos completely out of the Colbert character. Anyone else who may have doubts should see them.

What did I say! They just replayed the Colbert commercial. Give it another few hours, it'll show up again if you missed it.

It's just a matter of time now before they show the episode with Stephen and the banana.

My plans just got cancelled for rain, I'm waiting eagerly :-)

Is this the commercial? (you can see the little Daily Show logo in the bottom right corner). And of course the Colbert Report logo is different (although heck, I don't remember--maybe the logo WAS different back in the beginning anyway).

Also, from the same date, Jon says it for all of us "TV is better with Norm MacDonald on it".  Too bad Norm's 2003 show ("A Minute with Stan Hooper") lasted 6 episodes.
