A new chapter of Walking on Water is up!  And the author's got the rest of it all outlined and plotted out up until the conclusion, so I'm excited about that.  And along the same Captain/Duckling theme, the next chapter of Beyond the Horizon is up too. Wahey!

 

Also, for anyone else who is new, or signing up on Tumblr, I'm prairiepirate.  It's CS all day every day on my page, with some baseball, OneRepublic, and horses thrown in - ha!  Hope to see ya over there :-)

I've looked at it, but I'm not one for explicit sex scenes in fiction. When it comes right down to it, it's all just body parts at that point. I tend to love this pairing in many universes AU or no, though! With fanfic I have to feel that the characters are still THEM, and that you couldn't just insert random male/female characters into the story and it would still be the same story. The characters do seem a bit random male/female at this point to me, at least.

I'm digging it! But I totally see where you're coming from. AU is hard as both a writer and reader because you have to balance between keeping them in character while having them in a very uncharacteristic setting. I'm also really liking the Trouble with Faking It because I think it does a good job with that balance.

I'm also really liking the Trouble with Faking It because I think it does a good job with that balance.

The author of Trouble has done some very good stories! My other favorite is "A Change in the Wind."

Also, is it just me but whenever I see that Killian has both hands or I see Liam in a fic, there's always the sense of waiting for the other shoe to drop in the story :) It's like the Angel of Death is hovering.

I am enjoying Poem Without Words, but it's more PWP than romance. Also, I must be the only person who finds "Faking it" rather tedious. :-p I'm not feeling either of those fics as proper Killian/Emma AUs.

 

Counting Down the Days by Montana-Rosalie is my new favorite WIP.

That is an awesome list, daxx! Awesome! I would also recommend Poem Without Words. And I love AO3's filter and tag tools. You can get some good stuff you may have missed if you filter by kudos or if you want a specific theme like Neverland or smut or whatever.

I am loving Splitting Heirs. It's got Killian as a Prince, and closer to Lieutenant Jones in personality. There's not much conflict, or frission. But the entire world is so well put together (David is Prince Consort, and Ingrid is a Dowager,) and the writing style has this sort of unemotive fairy tale fantasy flow without the flowers. It's great to read Liam Jones get some loving, too.

I posted this on my tumblr but figured I would mention it here too. I deleted Man Advantage. I'm a little scared about what I just did, but I want to see where this could go. But it's the only story I've deleted so the others are still up and I'm already planning another canon divergent fic before the season starts.

I feel like I've read all the great to reasonably good CS fics, and am starting to scrape the bottom of the barrel with mediocre ones now. It seems that updates are not so frequent these days either. Whine whine whine...

Yay! I'm really enjoying The Wish You Make. Also Beyond the Horizon updated. I guess I whined prematurely... :-p

 

Yes--I read Counting Down the Days., It's one one of the most beautiful and heart-wrenching fics I have ever read! I also loved loved loved the author's previous story Open Your Eyes.

 

I also found a new CS fic called Dark Horse. Modern AU. It's very enjoyable, and the author has written separate outtakes from the PoV of other characters in the story as well.

i wound up reading this and liked everything about it except Emma.  I felt she was too teen angsty and not enough level headed cool or something.  it was a shame because I wound up just skimming the last few chapters after I really enjoyed the set up and world building in the first part.

 

I've discovered I read ff the same way I read published books.  I find a voice I like and then glom the entire backlist.  I've been reading through all of this authors work: A Change in the Wind (Complete) http://archiveofouro...g/works/3449285.  I'm not 100% convinced on the character voices but I think she comes close and I like the stories, so it works for me.  I may have to limit myself to just reading completes, because the serialized nature of WIP is kind of killing me, as I wait for the latest update on Faking It.

I've told myself in the past to stop reading WIPs. Too many promising stories just end up abandoned. Also, it can be difficult for me to juggle too many stories at once. OTOH, I have no discipline (Hook would be very disappointed in me, I'm sure) so now I'm reading multiple WIPs and checking regularly for updates.

I also have stories that I make up to entertain myself on the road. In my head canon, I've outed Liam (in a positive way) and constructed a possible/plausible backstory for Killian that makes use of what little we've gotten about him on the show, but is mostly just speculation. There's also the one where Emma tells Killian about their oops baby (I used to work with a woman who got pregnant even with an IUD), and one with the two of them sitting down to watch BttF. He especially likes the bit with the Enchantment Under the Sea dance, so Emma gets him Dirty Dancing and Footloose. I think he'd enjoy Airplane, too. He wouldn't get all the refs, obvs, but the word play in the cockpit (i.e., What's our vector, Victor ) would amuse him, as well as the sight gags.

I haven't read any fanfic in ages (haven't really had time), so I haven't been in this thread. Wow, sharky, that's great! GOOD LUCK!! I wish I would've read Man Advantage before you deleted it, though. 

 

I came across this story Dimples and All on Tumblr today and had a few minutes to kill, so I read it. Cora turns Hook into a 3-year-old in S2. It's really sweet and gave me all the feels.

It's funny, I used to sift through the fics on ao3 and ff but anymore I get enough recs from here, tumblr and new fics from the writers I follow in my inbox to keep me busy. I guess I should go take a look for someone new that maybe didn't get the recs.

Thanks for that post, Rumsy! I'm dealing with a case of writer's block right now -- I thought for sure I had the perfect idea for a story but I just can't make it work. So I've been avoiding reading fanfic as well. I really need to get back to it.

Adorable Baby!Killian is adorable, but the execution of this story bugged me. For one thing, it hardly seems fair to suggest that Snow didn't know from deprivation. She had to leave her home and fend for herself while living on the run with a price on her head. She wasn't a little kid, but she didn't have it easy during that time in her life.

Considering what Cora did to Smee and random fisherman guy, she seems more inclined to animal transformation when someone gets in her way.

Why is it no one seems to take Hook at his word, re: always a gentleman? Low born/impoverished is just more sympathetic than noble, I guess.

I know that's a lot of negativity towards a cute, short, feel-good sort of story, but it very much runs counter to my personal head canon. For one thing, I would've made Killian a few years older (six is still totes cute).

I was primed to enjoy Dimples and All because I vastly prefer missing scenes and canon divergence over pure AUs where the characters are working in a widget factory or living on a starship or whatever. 

 

But I also thought the characterization was generally great. The author managed to write Regina in a basically positive way without annoying me, which I wasn't sure was entirely possible. I thought Emma's inner monologue was excellent as she sorted through her feelings about not having known Henry at that age, her baggage from her own rough childhood, and her wish to save little Killian versus her not-so-secret desire to get to know grown up Hook better. 

 

I found myself hoping the Charmings let him stay for dinner even though he wasn't three years old anymore.

I liked the story well enough, despite my criticism (I'm a Virgo, it's what I do). I love the idea, and I've been spinning my own head canon version of Baby!Killian for a while now. I think the author could've had a bit more fun with it too. Captain Adorable the pint-sized pirate? Part of me wants to do my own take on this now (giving full credit to the other author, of course). I dunno. Is that even kosher?

 

As for dinner, I got the feeling his "Oh, bloody hell" was partly embarrassment and he left on that account. Still, it woulda been nice.
