Small Talk: Chili's

I still have a lot of swelling. It's going to drop more. But you have to remember-this was about getting rid of loose skin. There really wasn't more than 3.5 liters of fat to take off, and that was sort of the side bonus, not the main purpose.  These kinds of procedures aren't really meant for weight loss, they're for repairing and contouring things. I had really loose skin on my belly that wasn't going anywhere no matter how much weight I lost or how much I worked out. Also I needed abdominal muscle repair after pregnancy . I had a 6 centimeter division down the center (called diastasis recti) that made my core weak  it's not the sort of thing working out can really fix

And yes, it's the most painful thing I have ever experienced in my life. I have the hiccups right now and they're just killing me.

Oh.  As Emily Litella would say ...

oh no! Hiccups must be the worst, ouch!

I am going to a workshop on emotional eating tonight but right now I sort of just want to lounge around and do nothing. Oh well.. out into the cold I go, soon.

What is cold to you, @Kalliste? (You can just use that fake system, and I'll convert it to real temperature.) (Kidding. I know we're the oddballs.) I think we've had this discussion before, but my definition of cold has changed quite a bit depending on where I live.

I like the changes on the site and haven't had trouble finding anything - but will like it much more once the customized Home Page is reinstated (maybe tomorrow?). I can finally use bold and italics on my iPad, which never worked before.

I think I've only seen two green posts - both in the latest Survivor episode thread and both with 20+ likes if I remember correctly.

Actually the absolute worst thing ever is sneezing.  But pretty much anything you'd use your core muscles for is not a joy.  And now I have an infection that means I'll be off work a few more days, so this is adding up to one of the not better ideas I've had. Sigh.

Possibilities - have you actually developed Type 2 Diabetes?

SO scary! I was also terrified by that New Yorker article from several months back about how the Seattle area is overdue for its own big one and immediately told my brother, who lives there, to move. ( Kathryn Schulz just won a Pulitzer for it.) AND I just told my husband that we should move to the Mainland before HI is completely isolated due to a weather and/or climate change catastrophe. But it's true that there are potential disasters everywhere, and I may be a bit of an alarmist, so take it with a grain of salt if I say, "Run! Run for your life!"

(See that text hyperlink? I could never do that on my iPad before, either, and even on my computer I had to look up the html coding every time, so yay changes!)

Oh sneezing would be terrible. You'll be ok @Pixelit's all temporary :) Maybe it's like how they say when you have kids you forget how much it hurts - I'm not willing to take that risk myself.

And at the moment it is 12C/53F this morning I went out to catch the bus it was 0C/32F so, cold enough :D

I used to think that here in the Mid-Atlantic we were protected from those kinds of natural disasters (no earthquakes, tornadoes, wildfires or hurricanes) but in the past few years, a few hurricanes have done some damage.  Plus we have no idea how to handle more than an inch of snow, so any winter storm seems to be a disaster.

And, of course, there is the inevitability of DC sinking underwater, if you believe in the 'forebulge collapse' (TWSS!)

I had a post in another thread/forum and it turned green after 25 "likes." I've never felt so accomplished.

TWENTY-FIVE?  We'll never get green here. Not sure we have 25 people who traipse around Chilis anymore. Thanks for the info Clare!

Yes - some of our friends in Alaska and the Northeast might disagree, but that's plenty cold!

Welcome, ClareWalks, and thanks for de-lurking. Don't mind KoB; he likes to act scandalized, but he's harmless.

Pixel, I hope the infection goes away quickly and you're feeling better soon.

Kalliste, did you go to the workshop?

Not sure why I didn't notice this question last time I checked in. But the answer is: Yes. I found out in December. Super bummed about it. Have been studying my ass off, learning everything I can learn about it, since then. The sleep info was very damning. I have been discovering there are quite a few ways to kill your glucose regulation, besides the famous ones of gluttony and sloth. But the sleep problem seems to be one of the biggies.

Bummer.  I've been Type 2 for about 7 years now, I think. It's not that hard to manage once you get used to it. Sleeping, being active, and not eating too much crap are the keys.

For some reason all this time I've been thinking the green post was actually the thread went green when it got enough views/replies. I didn't realise it was individual posts with lots of likes.. I'm really a good mod, trust me. I'll ban you if you don't :P

I really hope this was on purpose.. or maybe it is better if it wasn't.

I also wonder this specific topic made @ClareWalks de-lurk.. what other things could we talk about that get lurkers passionate enough to post something?

I did indeed. I spent $40 on that, I was definitely going :P money is an excellent motivator to make me go do something.. I'm going to this Experiential Dinner which is run by the same company next week. The workshop was good, I have been trying to put more thought into what I'm eating and not just go off the handle and eat whatever the hell I want whenever.. granted I ate a kitkat and some popcorn when I got home in celebration of it being the weekend. She did say that we need to consider what are true celebrations to reward with food and which aren't. This probably wouldn't be one of those occasions.

I did, however, manage to resist the burger cravings at lunch and go with the original plan of a salad. That's also reason to celebrate right?

Thanks, gang! I feel God in this Chilis tonight. (This morning.) Actually it is totally random why I am here, I noticed there were new posts in the Office forum and I was curious, since I am rewatching it on Netflix, so I checked. And this Chilis is still hopping! :) And I didn't even know about posts turning green, so after I read that I kept my eyes peeled for green posts. There are some shows (The Walking Dead comes to mind) that will probably get a LOT of green in their threads.

The Arrow forum is SUPER SCARY.

Seriously.

I like the show and sometimes I want to see what other folks are saying after an episode, but they ALL hate watch it. And there are crazy fandoms and they yell at each other and it's crazy.

I mean, I hate watched Glee for a while, but Glee has nothing on Arrow.

I am kind of curious, for those who peruse PTV more than I :  What are the popular threads? Do they match up to popular shows? Big Bang Theory has a "yuge" tv rating - does that thread get a lot of action?  I detest all reality shows (unless you count sports as reality). Do the Kardashians and 600 lb life and dancing shows and such get lots of hits?

BTW, that Nielsen link I found above- that's pretty amazing to see the tv-social network-music-alcohol-salty snacks etc ratings.

Link to comment

I'm not sure which forums are most active here, or how they measure up compared to general show popularity in the wider world. I do know that back in the day, there was a sometimes a big difference between active forums on TWoP vs what shows had high ratings per Neilson. For instance, Veronica Mars was super-active, and very low rated.

I also think that in some cases forum traffic does not necessarily reflect what shows are most popular or watched even within the forum's community. Some of the shows I love the most I have trouble thinking of anything to say about. And some shows I like less give me lots of fodder because I want to nitpick or complain about the ways it disappoints me. There are shows I like enough to watch but which stick in my craw and wouldn't grive over them being cancelled. And there are shows I adore that leave me speechless. And some forums I stay out of because what other people are saying makes me cranky and I just want to enjoy my show and not argue about it.

RE the Neilsen top 10, I have never even heard of Frankford candy! I just looked it up now, and I'm doubly sure I've never crossed its path. And I watch a lot of TV, but I watch almost none of the shows in any of the Top 10 lists. I didn't realize that was so, and I was very surprised by some of the shows that made the lists.

That's because the internet knows that Veronica Mars is awesome :D

I think the same goes for LOST. Most people I know say "ugh, Lost" if I mention it but it's very popular on the internet and I used to love the TWOP forums for it.

All that top 10 list says to me is that the average person watches crap tv :P

I actually don't mod too many popular forums, they're mostly more active cancelled shows (as with The Office!) or on break (as with Rick and Morty - go watch it!). I pop into (because I watch) things like Doctor Who, Daredevil (and most netflix shows) and they are quite popular but not to the crazy level of something like Arrow. I believe that 19 Kids show was crazy! and also The Amazing Race seems to get a lot of visits.. plus Game of Thrones has the most mods of a show of all I believe.

In other news, this happened in my city the other day:

Apparently it is deemed not suspicious, although I don't know how a ute filled with jerry cans happening to catch fire could be considered anything but suspicious.

we also had this happen recently too... why would you try and still a dog wash! Whaaat.

I also bought a new ipad today (online, so I don't actually have it) to replace my 4y/o and some more embroidery thread for my cross stitch.. anyone do cross stitch? I recently picked it up and like doing little pixel type things and such.

Okay so you can berate me if you want because I cannot remember this: What is Flonkerton? Which game was that one?

How's your ipad @Kalliste? And going back to what you posted- yeah, LOST was on after I joined twop but I didn't get into that show until AFTER the dvds came out. That was truly my first binge show. I mainlined those 22 hours in a weekend. I had heard people do the "watercooler" talk about Lost for so long I was like "okay I'll give it a shot." And then took to the internet to figure out what the hell I was watching and all that Dharma Initiative stuff. (I had to go look for that, I have managed to scrub my brain of much of the Dharma)

I LOVE the Dharma stuff KoB.. my ipad (the old one) has a Dharma Swan sticker covering the apple logo :D I have an Orchid sticker that I'll be putting on the new one probably. That Dharma season was probably my favourite of the lot!

I haven't got the new ipad yet, it hasn't even been shipped! :'( I'm sure it will be beautiful though and hopefully as sturdy as my old one - it took a trip down the stairs once without getting scratched but put a hole in my wall...

Looking forward to the weekend!  It's supposed to be beautiful, hitting the low 70s.  It's been a busy week; meetings after work, plus my niece's high school graduation ceremony on Tuesday night.  I'm looking forward to a relatively quiet weekend.  Meeting some friends for pizza and a movie Saturday night.  I've never seen 'To Kill a Mockingbird' (blasphemy, I know!), so we are having a "movie night in" instead of going out to dinner, since they are appalled at my lack of culture.

And here's a weird thing: I've had the same bank account for 35 years.  The bank it was originally at was taken over in the 80s by Key Bank, but the account number stayed the same.  Now, the bank needs to change my account number for some reason (I guess the number carried over from the old account doesn't match their numbers).  I don't know why it took them 30 years to get around to changing it, but it's going to be a pain, since I have 3 different payees that automatically withdraw money from my account, plus I'll have to update my Permanent Fund information (I have that direct deposited).  So I have to take care of that on Saturday, and am not looking forward to it.  They are giving me a $100 gift card for my trouble, but it's still going to be a pain.

Fires are scary, Kalliste. I'm never done being amazed by what passes as "not suspicious" in this world. RE the dog wash, I think some people just like to make trouble.

I finally got outside this morning, and looked around the yard. Stuff is starting to bloom. But the sad/strange thing is that I also saw a robin fly into a window over and over again for about 45 minutes. She had some nesting material in her beak at first, but eventually she dropped it. Yet she kept flying into the window over and over again. Another robin, who I am guessing is the mate, kept coming over and sitting on a nearby tree branch, as though to say: "hey! this isn't working, come over here to this other tree, where we have a nest!" But robin #1 was determined to get through that window.

I felt terrible about it. The window goes to another apartment, and is on the second floor. The landlords use that unit for a vacation spot, so it's empty most of the time. There didn't seem to be anything I could do to help, or block the window, or... anything. I kept wondering if there was something in the room the bird was seeing, because if it was just her own reflection, why that particular window? And why did she not give up eventually and follow her mate to the correct location? The whole thing was sad. Clearly some kind of medical problem. Do birds get OCD? It was touching to see the other bird keep coming back and trying to encourage her to move away.

possibilities, last year there was a robin that became obsessed with the windows in my kitchen door and would fly into it over and over for sometimes up to an hour at a time. But it went on for a couple of weeks. I tried some things to stop it, like putting lots of tape over the windows to try to disrupt any reflections it might be seeing or its view of something in the house that might be drawing it, but nothing worked. It was very weird.

Link to comment

smrou, that's interesting! I don't know how long the robin was going at the window here-- I was outside about 45 minutes, but she was there when I arrived and also when I left. I wonder if yours gave up, or if she was eventually gotten by a predator, or what. I kept expecting mine to finally collapse and fall to the ground, but I don't get out there enough to check on a regular basis. For all I know, it has been going on for a while and might still be. If it had been on the ground floor, I might have tried to catch her in a net and bring her to the tree where her apparent mate was trying to lead her. Maybe breaking the cycle would have helped? But she was way up high and it wasn't a place I could get to at all.

Today shall now be known as the day I was able to befriend a little lizard and he was happy to just chilling on my arm. To the point where it was hard to get it to go back into the real world when I needed my hand back.

I've seen those lizards before! Funny story: My brother and his wife were in Australia (Townsville, near the Great Barrier Reef). They entered their hotel room and my SIL went to turn on the light switch. Aaaand it moved. It wasn't a light switch- it was one of those lizards.

She screamed bloody murder-- then they both had a good laugh over it, and they managed to take a picture of it as well. (I recall that spotted skin-- it's cute, as long as it doesn't surprise you)

I think it's a salamander (amphibian vs reptile)-- but either way, it's adorable. We have little "red efts" here, which are sweetly affectionate. They look like that, but smaller, and are bright red. I bet they like your arm because it's warmer than the ambient temperature, so basking on you is like basking on a sunny spot, even on a chilly day! Very sweet creatures.

What are you two going on about? It's a cold blooded mini reptilian scavenger, and OUT TO GET YOU!!! Run!!!

And the birds flying in your windows? THEY'RE OUT TO GET YOU TOO!!! They want your couch and big-screen TVs! They think the inside of your homes are full of worms!  I'm the King of them after all. I know what I speak.

You're quite probably right.. I group anything that looks like that into 'lizard' for lack of knowledge of any other names :P And yes, initially he was a bit hesitant to embark on the journey up my arm but I think eventually realised life was quite warm there.

TMI time, feel free to skip the following paragraphs

I was up to 'pap smear time' and decided I should just get it over with and go. I had a doctor in mind (but had never been to her before) and booked online. She was pretty booked up so I got a stupid time (as far as working around work goes) and asked if I could work from home for the morning. I get there this morning only to be told "oh she doesn't take new patients... sorry" and my options were a different male doctor or none at all. I opted for the male doctor so I didn't have to organise time out of work again and tried to suck up the extra nerves the change of plan had given me.

He calls me in and then asks me a thousand questions (which I assume are common) and kept pushing me on when my last one was. I kept saying 2 years and he kept asking as though I was lying or that I should have done it more often.. I actually just googled it and it says once every 3 but I always thought it was once every 2, anyway... we get down to 'pap smear time' and it just wasn't great.. I don't expect it to be a good experience but it was a pretty crap one. There was more blood than expected and he assured me how 'not good' that was. I don't know whether to think it really isn't good or that he was just so rough that he caused it.

So, we're in the 'not good' stage and the phone rings... AND HE GOES AND ANSWERS IT! I have a speculum 'in place' and he went and answered the damn phone.

So I have to go back in a month for a re-check up and in the mean time wait out the results of this one... instead of going to work I came home and ate a bunch of chocolate instead because I didn't want to have to deal with the thoughts of 'not good' at work.

Kalliste, that's horrible. I wish people who have no manners or social intelligence would get some training in those things before graduating from medical school.

Write the office a nasty note. Maybe if someone else owns the practice, and they get enough complaints, they will force him to shape up or move out.

Congrats, Setlist! I read your article. I thought it was funny. I didn't watch enough of GG to have a serious opinion about Lorelai's parenting, but I found your analysis amusing anyway.

I actually got requested to leave a review online from their booking system. I didn't go into specifics but basically said the experience was a bad one and I shouldn't have been able to book a doctor who wasn't taking new patients. That I also should have been advised before turning up of this or been able to see her anyway.

congrats Setlist, and I commented on your piece, falling squarely on team- you are not a crackpot.

Kalliste-- that sucks. I try to avoid OB-GYNs who are male, not because I subscribe to the notion that they're not as competent as women OBs, but because the one time I went to one he had a female tech in the room during the exam, as a witness of sorts to make sure there was nothing inappropriate happening. I don't know if that's a legal thing generally, or if that male doctor required it specifically, or it that's a requirement for first-time visits. But just the suggestion that something untoward might happen in that situation put me off male OBs.

Although on the male vs female OB question-- I'm pretty sure a female doc wouldn't leave you on the table in that position to take a phone call.

I had a doctor suggest that once too. It'd been longer than it should have been between tests and he said he could do it but a nurse would be in the room 'to hold your hand', needless to say I didn't go see him for it.

It is a bit silly if a male doctor needs to have a female in attendance to make sure everything is above board. That's just crazy. I'm assuming female doctors don't need a male in attendance when their male patients may be undressed.

In the US, there's almost always a nurse present during gyne exams.  It's to protect the physician from accusations of anything inappropriate. I have a female doctor (used to have a male - didn't matter to me either way although I've found female gynes to be much more understanding of women's issues.  Makes sense), and even she has a nurse or assistant in the room when she does my paps.  Women aren't immune from being accused of impropriety.

Kalliste - sorry to hear about your crap experience. That's a pretty inconsiderate physician.  A lot of them have no bedside manner at al.
