Okay I finally thought about why this topic has been bothering me so much. The show might make it seem like serial killers are quite common, but in reality they are incredibly, extremely rare. No matter what upbringing you have you are extremely statistically unlikely to become a serial killer. It's just not a "thing" most people have to worry about becoming, no matter what trials you face in life.

So I don't know why Reid would worry so much about becoming one. Unless he was secretly harboring killing fantasies this entire time (which I think is safe to rule out!)

Not sure if this is what you are referencing, but, in the Sex, Birth, Death episode, Reid said he knew what it was like to be afraid of his mind.  I took that to mean that he was afraid he could develop schizophrenia.  I don't know that he's been worried becoming a serial killer.

But he was thrown by his outburst in Red Light, following on his poisoning of the inmates a few weeks before.  He found himself acting unlike the self he's always thought he was, and more like the men surrounding him.  Scary stuff, for anyone.

I wonder if he would've asked her for a particular suit/shirt/tie combo. (although we know BJ Rogers woulda chosen it all...) and I wonder if Matthew wears his own socks or if the Costuming Dept is aware that they have to be mismatched.

or, is it the same suit that he had on for the bail hearing? It woulda been in storage at the prison since he was incarcerated?

glad I could make your day Reid/JJ shippers :)  (I'm in the process of editing screencaps right now. I keep telling myself fewer, yet ever episode it's more. ALready over the 200mark and I have at least two more Reid scenes to do. Shouldn't surprise me I guess, Aubrey was in the last one I overdid too......)

Nothing 'shippy' about it.  They may all know about the socks, but I was just tickled that, in the midst of the crisis, she would take the time to make sure she got them right.  Unless that's how he has them in his drawer.....hmmm.  Speaking of which, I don't remember the view we had of his sock drawer.  Did we see the colorful socks?  I only remember dark ones.

That is the same suit he had on at his hearing.  I remember, because I don't care for it, nor the plain white shirt.

For screen capping Reidfan this is the perfect scene. What is wrong with me??? I actually like them together. Not that I want to happen that on CM but they are just great together.

I'm conflicted about them, as well. There's no doubt she's the closest he's come to a level playing field (Kentucky Fried UnSub notwithstanding). I was all set to eyeroll at her when she sneered "Spencie..." when he came in, but she won me over immediately after that with her "STOP! You don't get to come in here and hiss at me like I'm the criminal! Have a seat."

BAM. True or not, that was pretty bitchin.

oh, i think the 'court suit/actually in the prison room with Cat suit' is a different one from the 'fancy place suit'.  The court suit was blue toned. At least it was in Green Light. I think.  But everything in fancy place is sepia-toned though.

His hair's still a mess in the prison room but he's neatly brushed in the fancy place. I could be mistaken but I think there's somewhat less facial hair or at least it's also neater, in the fancy place.

I'll have to dig up the screencaps to look, JMO, but there's probably a colourful array of socks in that drawer :)

lol.... I have to admit (and I just realised it's why there's so many more this time) my son has a thing for Aubrey like I do for Matthew. When I was 'capping this, he was sitting right next to me and managed to say: "Moooom! Tell *your* boyfriend to keep his paws off *my wife!" and I laughed and said "Your wife? Have you checked with Eric Bana about that?" He gave me a Hotch stare (really! he does it really well! LOL) and said "Just make sure you take lots of pics of my Aubrey."

ok then....

the shirt isn't plain white. It has  very subtle second shade stripes in it (you'll see that eventually :)  )

and I found the sock drawer photo. Note that the socks from 'Coda' are in there :)

*light bulb just went on*

okay so if the socks from Coda are in that drawer (and that episode was from what, six, seven years ago?) then

1. Matthew wears costume socks not his own because obviously the Costuming People would have had those around for their re-use here and

2. that's pretty cool, that they would keep clothing from that long ago and

3. it may not be the same pair of course :-|

I have a new eyeroll jpg for y'all

Alrighty then. Who thinks our beautiful man seriously needs to consider going apartment hunting. Because let's face it that one bedroom apartment just is not practical anymore, if he is going to have his mother continue to live with him. Reid needs at least a 2 bedroom apartment, maybe even 3 bedroom one if he decides he would like/need live in help for Diana.

LOL!  I'm not huge into "shipping" on any show that I watch (with few exceptions - I'm looking at you, Richonne!), but damn MGG and AP have great chemistry together.  Too bad Cat is a serial killer.  :D

Hey now don't toss it out. Because, if I know this show like I think I do Reid getting a more practical apartment isn't likely to happen anywhere but fanfic.

I can see Spencer buying his childhood home for Diana and he to live in. Her "before before" might not be Bennington, but instead their home when the family was intact. Her bookshelves, her bed with the big wooden frame... their life before... was there. Spencer could want to recreate that for her, the solace it gave her then, reading to him in bed, might help her now.

OR, it could trigger weasel Reid Sr. memories, and nobody wants that.

BUT. If anyone could make her feel at ease, at home again... it would be her loving son. Just a thought.

Aw. That's a nice sentiment. However I feel like it could go both ways-one way it is sentimental and gooey and great, the other way it brings back old horrors.

Do you think Reid would like to go back to Las Vegas? I wonder if he feels sentimental about the place bc it's where he grew up or if the place just brings back bad childhood memories.

I"m not going to lie I have a fantasy of him marrying a lovely woman, getting a job as a scientific researcher, and raising his twins in Las Vegas or maybe Passdena. (lol I know I am nuts)

I don't think he'll leave the BAU anytime soon, but I can totally see him spending a lot of time there with her. His presence is a comfort to her as we know so... I dunno. It was just a thought but it's definitely something I can see Spencer doing if he thought it would help Diana. She could see all her old doctors again, and things would be familiar for her, as long as that remained.

Just the fic writer in me spitballin'.

Another option would be for Reid to maybe find a home similar to his childhood one. I am thinking he'd be more likely to find such a home in Virginia as oppose to Washington DC.  And while I am on the subject has show ever indicated as to where exactly Reid's apartment is located.

MMC, zannej would be the one to ask about that. She worked it all out some time ago, with clues the show dropped from time to time. I do remember he's on a subway line, or close to it, in a suburb of DC, IIRC.

I just watched MGG's movie, "Hot Air."  Did anyone else stream it live tonight? It was really good!  A very charming movie, and he was fantastic in it.

I got to be an extra in it. And went to the premiere here in Austin where they were awarded the 'Comedy Vanguard' Award at the ATX Film Festival.

Also saw it just last month at the Velvet Crown theater with fellow MGG fan Deb.

I! not sure if this belongs here or on the Profile the Show thread, but since it involves Reid I'm gonna put it here.

So I noticed that in the episode Elephant's memory in the Clean Cops meeting Reid really makes a point that the suspect who was killed in front of him was a "kid." He repeats it several times. However, in 3rd life it is stated that Ryan Phillips ( the suspect who got shot) is 28 years old. That is not a kid!

Reid was actually 26 at this time, too. That means this "kid" was two years older than him. 26 year old men do mot call 28 year old men "kids." Reid told Hotch about this suspect's kidness also at the end of the episode, who I think would have called him out on it if he was really talking about an almost 30 year old man.

I'm being too nitpicky?

Reid is now 35 or 36 years old....and Rossi STILL calls him The Kid. I don't think it's done maliciously, it's affectionate and I think Rossi's just meaning that Reid is the youngest and thought of as a son.

as to the 3rd Life 'kid' reference. i wonder if the writer of Elephant's Memory just didn't realise that the unsub in 3rd Life was 28. As it is, the guy *was* hanging around with high school age teenagers, so he could presumably have been assumed to have been younger (until they checked records)

writing continuity error I would put that down to. And in the grand scheme of Criminal Minds writing continuity errors, I wouldn't put too much stock on this one, not when they've also done stuff like say Garcia is an only child in one episode, and has 4 brothers in another.... etc..

What you said about this being relatively minor in the scheme of things is very true:)

And they call Reid a kid because he's younger than everybody else and it's a cute nickname. They don't actually think he's a kid like Reid thought the suspect was a kid. Reid really reiterated that it was a kid to the cops and to Hotch in the plane scene. It was apparently a large part of why it triggered him and why he was so adamant about saving Owen (who actually was a kid) I think Hotch would have corrected him if the "kid" Reid was talking about was really almost a 30 year old man.

The episodes also aired on either side of the 2008 Writers Strike, so there ended up being like 3-4 months between the episodes. I guess they could have forgot.

Okay so connecting to my previous post I have recently re-watched Elephant's memory. This is one of my all-time favorite episodes, but I noticed something different this time around that I haven't before. Before, I always thought that Reid identified himself with Owen due to his past. Reid simply felt very bad for him because he had experienced the same thing. He wanted to save him so bad so another kid wouldn't die in front of him, prompting him to take drugs.

Now, I'm thinking that Reid was identifying him in the current time. Owen was dealing with his trauma by killing those who hurt him and eventually killing himself. Reid was heavily craving drugs to deal with his past trauma. The bad father, an absent parent, extreme bullying, etc are all past traumas that Reid and Owen share. Owen was succumbing to killing the same way Reid thought he was succumbing to drugs. I think Reid was making parallels to Owen in the current time.

Reid also talks about how people could have prevented Owen from doing what he did the same way somebody could have made drugs less attractive to Reid if they reached out to him when he was struggling growing up. It is stated in the episode Revelations that people take drugs in order to escape. If somebody would have done something Owen wouldn't need to escape and neither would Reid.

When Reid saves Owen he is saving himself. It is more of a selfish act than I previously thought. If Owen dies  then he gets the ultimate "escape." Since Reid is drawing extreme parallels between themselves, this means that they have both succumbed and Reid would take drugs again. It shows that they are both really too damaged to get through life. You can see Reid squinting his eyes when he's talking to Owen. He's expecting to get shot. But he doesn't care because he knows that if Owen dies he will go back to drugs and his life will be over. He also didn't want to see another kid die in front of him.

On the jet home, Hotch tells him to "catch the rest of that movie." I took this as making parallels once again. Reid said that the somebody "should have seen the signs" with Owen. This is Hotch "seeing the signs" with Reid.

Now I think the confusion lies whether Reid only saved Owen because he didn't want to see another kid die in front of him again and if that kid dying in front of him was the only reason Reid wanted to go back to drugs. I am going to say "no" and that the kid dying in front of him was only a trigger. We learn more about Reid's past and why he would want to escape in this episode. Also, after Reid tells the goalpost story, he says something along the lines " Owen just wants to escape. I know what that's like." I think this is a reference to drugs. Reid wants to escape using drugs, and there are many reasons why he wants to do this besides the kid dying in front of him. Of course, he can't admit this to Hotch.

I also wonder if interpretation depends on if you're a casual vs more strict viewer. Reid's drug story happened a long time ago from this episode, in season 2. All of Reid's childhood issues were even more dispersed throughout the series. So, they give the " he didn't want another kid to die in front of him" angle so the episode makes sense in isolation to the casual viewer whereas loyal viewers know there is a lot more going on with Reid's addiction. I mean, I definitely think that kid dying in front of him affected Reid a lot and having it happen a second time would too. I just think there was more to it than that.

Am I crazy ? Basically, I'm saying Reid sees Owen as himself and sees Owen killing and his own drug use as akin.

Or maybe I got this all wrong and Reid can simply relate to having revenge fantasies.

I am also struck by how selfish Reid was. Reid knew that Owen was going to the police station, but he didn't tell Hotch or Morgan or Rossi, who he was with. The really awful part however was that he didn't even call JJ or Prentiss, or anybody else at the police station to warn them. If Owen got there first, they would all be caught off guard. Let's not forget that Owen had automatic weapons-automatic weapons are all but impossible to possess in the US because they are so lethal. The only reason Owen had access to them was bc his dad was the tactical trainer. If he opened fire with his automatic weapons at the police station, many, many people would be dead including possibly JJ and Prentiss. I understand that Reid wasn't thinking clearly bc of his drug cravings, but wow. He really should've been fired. Owen got to the station very shortly after Reid got there- Owen very easily could have  gotten there first. Reid didn't only risk his own life to save Owen.

The more I think about it, the more I don't understand how the team members, especially JJ and Preniss, could trust to work with Reid again. In their line of work you have to be able to trustb your team members. Reid pretty much sacrificed them for Owen and himself. Of course, it turnd out fine, but there was a greater chance it wouldn't have. How do they know that Reid wouldn't let his emotions get to him again? How would they know that Reid would be able to overcome his drug habit that made him so emotional? Of course we know with hindsight that Reid was fine after that, but they didn't then.
