S04.E03: And the Childhood Not Included

That kid was annoying how he treated his mother.

Caroline giving Oleg a back rub is too disgusting.  At least she is spending significant money on Han... finally after he invested in her failed cupcake restaurant, let use the new cupcake window, and gave Caroline a $20 bill to pay for that salad to save face in the last DJ episode.

I love this show, but every time I watch it, my running thought is 'how is this show, with all of the blatant sexual jokes and innuendos, appropriate for 7:00 (cst) viewing'. It's hilarious, & I'm no prude, but I honestly feel like it's way too raunchy for that early in the night.

I honestly thought the kid was pretty funny, and I'm kind of in awe of the fact that in this day and age a mainstream, network sitcom has no qualms about portraying an out and proud gay nine year old. Such a thing would have been unthinkable just 15 or 20 years ago. Parents would have been outraged, sponsors would have been pulling out support, there would have been news coverage.

The fish thing was dumb though. No, a blue tang does not cost $500. Saltwater fish are expensive, but not that expensive. And you wouldn't have that many of them in a 10 gallon tank either. Nor would it make any sense for Han to take up that much counter space when there's so little of it to begin with.

I just saw the scene with the kid and his mother in the diner.  While i did think the kid fell a bit too deeply into the finger snapping trope of snide gay male, the writing of the lines was some of the best I have seen this show produce.  That is not saying much since I find the show is one of the worst carried over sitcoms currently on air (that at least I am aware of -- I wanted to like this show when it came on but it is just so awful, and has only gotten worse from what I can tell).

Whichever of the writers conceived and executed the kid is or are the only one(s) show should still have a job on this set.  I refuse to snap fingers unless it is playing a game with my 18 month nephews who think I am god for being able to do it.  But snide I do in my sleep.   In fact ditch most of the supporting cast and just have the kid.  In one scene he actually captured what I was hoping the character of Max was supposed to be.  Instead Max is a walking talking bathroom wall without the numbers.  Crude is fine.  Crude as lazy cheap and lacking of any real imaginative wit is just sad and tired.

I don't mind the raunchy jokes my problem is when the raunchy jokes are the only thing you got going for you.  I am so sick and tired that everything that comes out of Max's mouth is a sex joke or a mother abandonment comment. That is ALL she says.  All this time and Caroline has yet to come to terms with her current situation? It all just gotten so old!

One of the (few) things this show does consistently well is guest characters. I'm reminded of the episode where Max baked the kosher cupcakes for the Bar Mitzvah and the kids on that were hilarious too.  When Max and Caroline are played against even more outrageous, over the top caricatures, they work, because it makes them seem like the normal. ones by comparison. Where they don't work (which is most of the time) is when they're played off the other regulars like Han, or against each other, because then they just seem mean and/or dysfunctional

I liked what I thought the original idea of Max seemed to be.  Street savvy and sharp tongued and no patience for those she considered fools.  But too many times she seems the foolish one.  Plus the show decided pretty much out the gate that every episode would end with a warm and fuzzy Carolyn to Max "aw you do have a heart" moment that frankly makes me ill.  It does not help that the show has not one supporting character that really, well supports.  I hate Oleg and Sophie,  Feel sorry for the guy from SNL whose name escapes me (which makes me feel even sorrier) for how tacked on his character seems.  Han had promise but they made him too easy of a target and without enough bite back.  Maybe that has changed since I never usually get past the first ridiculous Urkel-esque entry of Sophie and what have to be the most unfunny lines ever delivered.  They must think Jennifer with an accent can read the warning label with possible side effects for Levitra and it will bring the house down.  I just want to punch her.  And I loved Jennifer before this.
