NextIteration October 12, 2014 Share October 12, 2014 I didn't get the reaction to virgins in college either. Since we're discussing it - my kid was out of her first year of college and home on summer break - it was part of a decision to continue a long distance relationship or not. Well hello, if that part isn't any good, why continue on into adulthood and separation. I was completely on board because yes, that plays largely into adult decisions. Not everyone is doing it in their cars at 16, I think a lot of kids these days are thinking about this in adult ways. 3 Link to comment
Cosmocrush October 12, 2014 Share October 12, 2014 (edited) I did like that she mentioned it was legal in five states; I, too, thought it was only in Oregon (the others are Montana, New Mexico, Vermont and ... Washington?) Yes, Jakey Washington passed a Death with Dignity law in 2008. I confess I only know that because I live there. Whoopi is assuming HER experience is the norm, and it's not. I remember her talking about her daughter or granddaughter being sexually active at age 14, and Whoopi being Ok with it, because she thought the girl was old enough to decide for herself. (and this was in the context of the Polanski case) though some parents accept that kids have sex early, many do not accept it. I remember that conversation too backformore, and Whoopi has used the example many times. But it wasn't just being sexually active; Whoopi's daughter decided to have a baby at age 14. I'm guessing the same child that just made Whoopi a great-grandmother but I don't really know (or care, lol). Oh and thanks for confirming Whoopi's age. I do the same thing with stars that are my age. Edited October 12, 2014 by Cosmocrush 3 Link to comment
maggiemae October 12, 2014 Share October 12, 2014 I live in WA...it is now legal but very difficult to get - my Uncle had cancer and was not able to go to the 5(?) doctors necessary to sign off, to weak and an ordeal....and then passed away. My Mother's Dr, otoh, helped her in the hospital before this was allowed...she was there during Christmas and she wanted to pass between Christmas Eve and NYE, for her children's sake. And it was inevitable it would be very, very soon. She had been a florist shop owner once and always cautioned her clients not to send poinsettias to those that passed during the holidays.....the holidays are difficult enough for those left to be reminded with them. I am very happy that the show discussed this as I think it is a person's right to choose. And glad the panel and so many here agree. 5 Link to comment
Former Nun October 13, 2014 Share October 13, 2014 Not everyone is doing it in their cars at 16, I think a lot of kids these days are thinking about this in adult ways. Let's make this all about me. I lost my virginity after marriage-and it wasn't easy, fun, or enjoyable at all. I've always said that if I my first time had been at 16-ish and in a car...it would have been the last time. I might REALLY have become a nun! 5 Link to comment
Qoass October 13, 2014 Share October 13, 2014 wish I could remember a novel someone wrote based (as they say "thinly based") on experiences "working" with her when she took over McCall's magazine. There were lots of articles about Rosie's heavy-handedness around that time. I remember one of those articles told of how Rosie wanted to put Macy Gray on the cover and she had to fight the McCall's people to make it happen because they didn't think Graywas famous enough (or white enough) to be there. Rosie ended up sharing that cover to appease them. Next, she wanted to put a photo of herself from the hospital where she was recovering from a serious staph infection on the cover for a story of the dangers of such illnesses. Apparently that was a problem too-- not light and fuzzy enough and horrors! She wasn't coiffed and made up in the picture! If that's bullying, more power to her. It used to be that history was written by the winners. Now it seems to be written by people who heard stories from other people who used to work someplace. 8 Link to comment

I read the book a few years back and enjoyed it. 1 Link to comment
Talented Tenth October 28, 2014 Share October 28, 2014 It is my belief.... and was at the time too.... that President Obama was in support of gay marriage but it was not politically intelligent to come out with that opinion...... I believe Hillary was in the same predicament. I hate when people like Nicolle bring up President Obama when it comes to marriage equality. Before President Obama became president, he supported gay marriage. Then, he said he defined marriage as being between a man and a woman, but supported equal rights under the law for gay couples, did not support gay marriage bans and had no opposition to states legalizing gay marriage. I do believe that President Obama felt he had to sit on the fence to try to appease gay marriage supporters, but also not upset the opposition. Before he was elected again, he came out in full support of gay marriage which was courageous in my book. He could have waited until he won the election. President Obama's stances on gay marriage and equality are extremely different from republicans who wanted gay marriage to be banned in the constitution and who did not want gay Americans to have equal rights. Nicolle is typical. The only difference between her and Elisabeth is that Nicolle is calmer and smoother. 5 Link to comment
NextIteration October 28, 2014 Share October 28, 2014 Obama was for same sex marriage before he was against it, and then came back around in 2012 in support of it. It's called political expedience, and Nicolle or any other person on the planet - liberal, conservative, Republican or Democrat has the right to call him out on it. I do believe that President Obama felt he had to sit on the fence to try to appease gay marriage supporters, but also not upset the opposition BINGO. Is it only okay for you to make this observation? Talented Tenth October 29, 2014 Share October 29, 2014 Obama was for same sex marriage before he was against it, and then came back around in 2012 in support of it. It's called political expedience, and Nicolle or any other person on the planet - liberal, conservative, Republican or Democrat has the right to call him out on it. BINGO. Is it only okay for you to make this observation? An important distinction is that Obama was always for equality under the law for gays which is what the gay marriage debate is about. It's not strictly about the title of "marriage". He hedged on the title, not the rights. Many gays don't care about the title -- they just want the rights that heterosexual couples have. Detractors like Nicolle purposely do not point out that fact to make it seem as if Obama was on the same page with bigots and/or people who wanted constitutional amendments to ban gay marriage. There is a much different tone coming from President Obama who has remained consistent in his inclusion of gays vs. members of the republican party who have condemned homosexuals while various ones throughout the years have been caught up in gay scandals. Like I said, Nicolle is very slick with her talking points. That's the game she and her ilk play. That disingenuousness is why I can never like her or people like her. She appears to be a charming person, but there's an ugliness inside, IMO. 3 Link to comment
