S13:E07: Juan’s Journey

Recommended Posts

New 2/12/2025

“Pastor Juan's love of food made him overweight, but it has never been a problem until recently, since he's gotten too big to preach and sing to his congregation. If Juan is to help others, he must first help himself by curbing his earthly appetite.”

(Next week’s episode 2/19/25 is S10.E01: WATN: Carlton & Shantel S, so guess 7 episodes for season 13 is it).

I bet they would just lie about that too.

Juan and his relatives lies about what he ate were infuriating.    I wonder if he stayed on the program or not?       I couldn't believe how much he ate before noon, including that underbaked pizza and wings.  That breakfast was massive, his pizza and wings was a family serving, and his grocery store run was appalling.   His mother is such an enabler.

Juan's drive thru at his favorite restaurant was massive, and did anyone else get anything to eat?

Figures I'd miss an episode where the pounder actually Leaves his room.

Took him a while, but nice to see a steady loss.  Why do they All lie to Dr Now-'i just eat baked chicken and yogurt once a day' lmao you're almost 700lbs! The jig is up.

Such a likeable family. They should've been featured on Family By the Ton.  They were a bit smaller than the usual cast, but they all could've used the diet. Maybe not enough people for that one?

When Juan said 'Cajun Creole cooking' I got excited to see some of those dishes, but alas, we just got the usual enormous egg & frozen sausage breakfast followed by pizza. Zzzzzz. Anyone suss out what his favorite restaurant was?

As usual, Dr. Paradise did a great job of getting Juan to express his pent up pain, and got him motivated. Love Dr. P!

Nutritionist was better than usual, but I'm still waiting for one who gives practical advice on how to make healthy food more palatable with herbs and spices. Or at least explains how processed food is designed to be addictive, and it takes a few weeks to retrain your tastebuds, so non processed food won't taste good for a little while.  But it's always about taking away and food shaming.

I wonder why they edit out the cost of those huge fast food drive-through runs. We heard him order an enormous list of food and then I was on the edge of my seat waiting to hear the total. But they cut that part. I'm sure production pays for it, but still, we want to hear it!

It could be another guessing game for me, seeing how close I can get to the total. I already do that with the first weigh-in and I'm getting pretty good. In the previous episode I was so close, just off by a couple pounds. This week I was way off, though.

Me too. Dr. Paradise rocks. Has Dr. Lola left the series for good? She hasn't been used in a long time. Unless I missed it, which is possible, as there are some episodes I've zoned out.

And I agree about the blatant lies about the amount of food he was consuming. They all think Dr. Now is stupid. However, this time Dr. Now kept his annoyance with the lying in check and didn't seem to get too frustrated at Juan's lies and slow progress. Juan's mobility surprised me because to move around with that much weight and get in and out of the car, in the passenger side no less, was a feat in itself.

And he at least two different pairs of shoes that he could wear!

Bonus is longer scene with Dr. Paradise. Juan talked about being a drummer in high school, played football, but got too big.  His coach said lose 35lbs and he couldn't lose it. So, he got cut from the basketball team. Didn't like his Dad. His Dad didn't like that he was a church kid instead of an athlete. Dr. Paradise was surprised his Dad was angry he wanted to go to church, did he think he was soft? Juan says ,no.. But his Dad wanted him to be into sports more.  He had a fall when he was living alone, and it was hard to get back up. So, he had to move in a 'room by his sister.'

Think that was the only bonus scene.  Have a feeling Juan isn't really a 'church kid' & just wanted some identifier that made him unique, and when sports didn't work out, he went harder on religion. Because he doesn't strike me as a religious person at all, let alone a preacher. But that could be because I'm used to religious people making that their whole identity and constantly inserting the word God into any conversation. So, could just be my bias. But I'm betting if he were able to lose the weight, he'd be a 'sports kid' instead. At any rate, Good luck, Juan!

I think so; I just did a little google and found a reddit thread with a poll asking 'who wants Lola to come back' and that was four years old. (Also found her website which says she is PSYCHOTHERAPIST EXTRAORDINAIRE. A ctrl-F for the number 600 found nothing on her bio page, and I skimmed briefly; doesn't seem to mention the show.)

Was this the first time they captioned the dog’s name?

Did they?!? I missed it! I said a couple weeks ago in the live chat that I wanted to see them do that! (I think it was the one with the agoraphobic where she took the dog for a walk and didn't even get out of the yard.)

Cujo
Stephen's Dog

(A teacup Chihuahua in perpetual danger of being sat on and never seen again, of course.)
