S13.E12: Relief Cut

Recommended Posts

Stella, I regret to inform you that if you express a preference for adoption, you’re going to end up pregnant by the end of the season. It’s the law of inverse fertility, and it never fails. Because the writers room cannot resist it.

Hermman is getting better about playing politics. And it was nice to see Carver and Ritter bonding over the argot unique to each truck.

Hermann gets a win under his belt.  He's not wrong, either, about Large Diameter Hose.  A 50' section weighs about 60 lbs., and it neither carries nor drags very easily.  Of course, off camera, the Treasurer is going to call the Fire Chief, and the call will work its way down to chief Boden, who will simply growl into the phone "Are you threatening my people?" and the issue will be dropped.  :)

These firefighters sure drink a lot for people who work 24 on, 24 off.

The bathroom light issue was never resolved.  Is Station 51 going to burn down?

Yeah, better ask next time before you go playing with the BC's truck.  Bad idea.  They should have maybe used demo'ed on Carver or Ritter's car.

It was cool to show the crew hand jacking the LDH down to the hydrant, which really was a dry barrel hydrant (maybe that's the norm in Chicago), but wasn't Hermann actually turning the valve the wrong way?

They work 24 on, 48 off.  Though I agree that they are always choosing to drink the night before shift, which is stupid when they have 2 better nights to choose from.

"Did she just thank me for having a hot cousin?" was one of the better lines all season. 😄

This show has certainly seen better days, but credit where credit's due: they still manage to pull off some pretty gnarly calls now and then. That women with the cake thing stuck through her face? Pretty damn gross. Had to look away. Rescuing the woman with dementia from the burning car was well executed as well.

Ritter needs to decide if his priority is to live alone or if his priority is to be with someone. If it's the former he's going to have to hope he meets someone who feels the same way he does or else accept that he'll always be alone.

I liked this episode.  There was no great fire rescue, but it was still involving things firefighters would do.  I also liked the B-story for once, because it was also very fire related.  Herrmann and Kylie sticking the tracker in a hydrant that they knew would be stolen, and then following up with both the junkyard guy and the city treasurer was pretty well done.  I was afraid it might be about the stupid lightbulb all episode...

Do we know how Stella's parents died?  I like that they kind of tried to address her history of having no family to now having a cousin that's like a little brother by her taking the blame for the guilt she felt about Grant.  That wasn't bad... They rewrite history all the time, but this wasn't one of the worst offenses, IMO.

Other than meeting her ex-husband when she was first introduced in season four, this is just about the most backstory we’ve ever gotten for Stella. Even the drug issue hasn’t come up since her first season on the show. I thought they had just decided to quietly forget about it until yesterday. I’m assuming the parents died simultaneously, probably in some sort of an accident. It did sound like she lost them at the same time.

By the way, when the cousin started talking about “when she had Noah” did anybody think for a split second he was actually referring to Stella having a baby? Just the way it was said made me think that we were about to get a whole different traumatic backstory.

I was fairly  terrified that Herman was going to embarrass himself and the chief at the dinner, and pleasantly surprised when he made a quiet, compelling, compassionate argument. Nice touch about only two hydrants at the Treasurer’s daughter’s school and how far away they are. Then after being asked how much it would cost to replace them, he simply replied ‘how much is a life worth?’ Or something like that. I was very proud of him.

I loved it lol! Also loved how there was no shame, just ‘oh hi! Figured it was better to say good morning than just slink out.’🤣
