S01.E05: You Have A Lot To Learn About Pirates

They definitely worked in some adult themes this go around with the "What's a concubine?" line and the whole pleasure planet really being adults only.  Between this and Andor, the seeder side of the Star Wars Universe is alive and well!

Still curious to see if Jod will come back around when it's all said and done, but this betrayal will be very hard to walk back.  The man put a dagger to a teen's throat: even if he was doing everything he can for her to just surrender so he didn't have to go through with it, that's quite dark.  Also looks like his force powers are legit.  His conversation with Wim had a few lines that are similar to what Jedi say a lot, so I'm definitely thinking he was some kind of Padwan at one point.  Not sure if he went rogue before or after the Jedi got wiped out.

Great seeing Kelly MacDonald and hopefully Pocket survived that acid bath Jod left for the bounty hunters.  Julie Ann Emery as the main hotel worker was a fun surprise as well.  The voice for the former captain sounded familiar, so I'm curious to see if we'll see him or a holo version of him again.

Will Fara and Wendie's attempts to get a message to the kids put them in danger or have them finally meet this mysterious supervisor?!

The booby trap stuff was fun.

Yea between threatening to murder a kid pretty violently and telling 33 to refill the acid pool this show went surprisingly dark. Although all of the kid actors did a great job showing how scared and betrayed they felt.

I imagine now it will be a race to see who can get back to the ship first. I wonder how pirate rules work for that sort of thing. I mean pirates are all about stealing, so if the kids manage to steal the ship is Fern the captain again.

Also with Neel having experience at the flight controls and KB having used the navigation/hyperdrive computer I am wondering if they could fly it themselves.

Fern annoyed me again this episode so I was fine with Jod pulling the knife...honestly I don't think he had any intention of killing her. However, I'm glad the show went a little dark or actually very dark with that acid bath...yikes.

KB and Neel are still the best but, at least they have Wim some depth and I did like that he tried to use the saber to save Fern.

Definitely think Jod was a Padawan or Youngling and either left/kicked out of the order or went into hiding after Order 66.

The Goonies is vibes were much appreciated in this episode.

I don't think Jod betrayed them. He realized there needed to be an adult in charge and the kids were in way over their head. Becoming captain was the best, quickest, and most efficient way to make that happen. I'd been hoping to see Fern taken down a peg so I was glad that it happened.

I took Jod's look at the end to be slightly impressed, not anger. The kids had figured a potential way out. Also, having them taken prisoner was a way to get them back to the ship.

I'm still waiting for Wim to have his big hero moment, which will probably happen closer to the final episode.

All of the booby traps felt very Raiders of the Lost Ark, but the treasure room reminded me a bit of the Cave of Wonders from Aladdin.

Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed this episode.

I am not sure I follow the logic that charging them with mutiny and throwing them in the brig was for their own good. I think it was more than he saw the treasure room and realized there was probably even more possible when they get to At Attin especially if he had kids as hostages.

Totally agree!

It's not the charge or the brig, just the fact that 33 was ordered to get them on the ship.

The kids are ... kids.  Every time Jod tried to do something, the kids would object or argue amongst themselves or say, "But I want to ... "  They don't know what they're doing, and that's to be expected.  They're kids!  But this is serious, and Jod does know what he's doing.  Sometimes he really needs them to just do what they're told (he can explain later), and this was the best way to make that happen.

Totally agree. Fern talks tough but can't back it up and at the end of the day they are just kids. No adults anywhere (including where they were in this episode) are going to take them seriously. He humored them longer than I would have.

Loved the lightsaber find by Wim. That fumble was scarier than Din Djarin trying to wield the dark saber!

It's also notable that we'd just seen Jod tell SM-33 to boil the other pirates in acid, proving how ruthless he's capable of being. Because immediately after, he goes out of his way *not* to hurt Fern. He quickly disarms her and threatens her, and he certainly scares all the kids, but he could've hurt/killed her so easily, and instead he just grabs her, threatening her with the knife (but never cutting her) while he repeatedly tells her to yield. Whether his intentions are pragmatic or self-serving, I think it's significant that he never actually hurts Fern or any of them.

Of course, it's still a scumbag move, even if he *does* have a good reason for it. I won't begrudge the kids any feels of anger or betrayal towards Jod in the coming episodes.
