AimingforYoko April 13 Share April 13 Visually compelling (and loud). I like that Garland basically framed it as a war movie...that just happened to take place in America. The correspondent characters were a bit stock: Wagner Moura as the action junkie, Kirsten Dunst as the war-weary veteran, Cailee Spaeny as the wide-eyed newbie and Stephen McKinley Henderson as the old guard in for one last big story. But no fault on the performances, they were great. (Especially a cameo by Dunst's hubby, Jesse Plemons, channeling his inner-Todd). They gave no context for the civil war or who to root for, other than pointing out that President Nick Offerman was in his third term. 2 Link to comment

Spoiler The photo that was to be Jesse’s defining picture, the WF’s team proudly standing over the presidents body, is chilling it doesn’t matter which side, that smells of the January 6th insurrection. I will remember this movie, for sure. Everyone in the gtoup I saw it with wanted the prequel movies, but ai think it stands on its own. Edited April 15 by Affogato 3 Link to comment

I basically took the whole thing as the Ukraine/Russian war transferred to the United States. (I did some research and it looks like they began principal photography as the war in Ukraine started, and I thought a lot of the visuals seemed to match a lot about what was coming on tv at the time.) I was semi-spoiled so I knew one of the two women were going to die, but it was still a pretty shocking moment when it finally happened. 3 Link to comment
ZoqFotPik April 19 Share April 19 I was unspoiled, but I thought that was insanely obvious. As soon as Jessie and Lee had the "What do you think?" conversation, all I could think was "Well gee, I wonder how the movie will end?" 1 Link to comment
mojoween April 20 Share April 20 What do you think Kirsten Dunst was thinking when her (real-life) hubby got plowed? It was an interesting movie, even if I thought it was going to be about the actual war, with some context given, rather than Lee’s story. Also it’s 100% Jessie’s fault Sammy died. Should have stayed in the truck, child! 2 Link to comment

I kind of wonder if that's the reason why there's been a pretty tepid reaction to this movie. I think a lot of people were thinking it was going to be an actual war movie, instead of what you actually get. I don't know though, I like that we get to breathe for stretches of the movie and that it's not a constant war movie like Dunkirk. 1 Link to comment

Hanahope September 23 Share September 23 I was underwhelmed. I thought it was a pretty typical world weary veteran X takes novice X under their wing to teach them X during their journey while veteran learns how to look at X with fresh new eyes, then passes the torch to the novice when the vet dies. i would have been a bit more interested to know how the heck Texas and California got on the same page. and how does this group go from being so cautious about getting gas to being 'lets play car tag' on unknown roads is beyond me. or are only one group of press people smart and the rest are complete idiots? i don't know how long this war had been going on, it was unclear if it was months or years (i'm leaning towards a year at least given "third term"), but certainly no one gave a crap about their "press" identification. 1 Link to comment

Assuming the politics in the movie are basically along the lines of what we have in today's world, I thought this was a bit of fridge brilliance. If California and Texas can put aside their differences to fight for a common cause then they really are the United States. I think part of it is that the group has been hyper-vigilant through most of the journey up to this point so they need to unwind when they can. Remember, even in the peaceful little town where it seemed like the residents forgot there was a war going on, the group was still being watched by snipers. The open road seemed less dangerous by comparison. It's also worth noting that the younger reporters are the ones who do the dumb stuff while the older ones have a better appreciation for danger. Jessie was constantly getting herself into trouble while Lee and the others seemed to be a lot better at not being the cause of their own peril. 1 Link to comment
