DanaK February 18 Share February 18 Quote The 14 remaining chefs are tasked with preparing a curry dish that promises to pack a punch with only 30 minutes on the clock. The winning dish gives the entire team immunity and claims the top-level kitchen for the next challenge in the all-new "Curry in a Hurry" episode of Next Level Chef airing Thursday, February 22 (8:00-9:02 PM ET/PT) on FOX. KeithJ February 23 Share February 23 Not surprising to see Ari go. She was a mess in both episodes so far and both times were dishes she makes “all the time”. 3 Link to comment
DanaK February 24 Author Share February 24 I know nothing about making curry and I avoid eating it for concern that it will be too spicy. So kudos to the contestants for having a clue on how to put it together Link to comment
blackwing February 25 Share February 25 Ari was not great, but I don't think she should have been picked for elimination. It should have been the Greek Girl (sorry, I don't know her name but she says she is Greek in just about every time she has appeared onscreen) that had the undercooked fish. I get that Ari had too much turmeric but her protein was at least cooked. I would say raw is a worse offense than overseasoned. Greek Girl would have used her immunity so I assume it would have been Ari in the cookoff anyways, but still. I'm wondering if the chefs are getting any kind of cheat books or something to study in advance the night before. Some of these chefs had never cooked curry. How do they know what spices and proportions to use? Are the mentors helping? The blonde in the cookoff had never cooked or eaten butter chicken. She didn't even know what it was. How did she cook it? Was there a lot of advice from Gordon and her team that didn't make it onto the camera? 1 Link to comment

And unless Lauren has been living under a rock, in 2024, I’m pretty sure most everyone has heard of butter chicken. Of course maybe because she’s a home cook, she’s never heard of it? I can’t recall where she’s from, but I don’t think it’s from some small town where Indian dishes are an alien concept. So I’m with you thinking there is some behind the scenes coaching. I don’t know what the requirements are to make the cut here, but I think knowing about all cuisines should be a requirement. Then there Izhaiya who also never made a curry dish, but his was deemed the best. Just lucky, I guess? 1 Link to comment

You might figure out how to make a hamburger by watching what other cooks are doing but curry? No way. I also question what the point is of making them make a dish that traditionally takes a long time in 30 minutes. The judges then say the winner tastes like it's been cooking for hours. Somehow, I doubt it. 3 1 Link to comment

Somehow, I doubt it. Al due respect to Gordon, but I make a great chicken curry (my dad’s recipe) in 20 minutes. And the meat is tender and juicy! I’ve been making it for 10 years. Link to comment

On MasterChef, the contestants get an off-camera briefing on the particular item they will have to make. Without that, apparently many would be unable to even atempt difficult things like fancy pastries or dishes they've never heard of. I don't know if they do the same thing for NLK, but it would explain how the contestants can say they've never had the dish but then produce some reasonable version of it. 2 Link to comment

I’m in Canada, and our largest grocery chain actually sells butter chicken as a frozen meal (think Stoffers or Swansen’s type of frozen meal). Link to comment

I don't generally use a recipe when I make a curry unless it's very specific, but just googling came up with what seems like a nice variety to look at. https://www.bbcgoodfood.com/recipes/collection/easy-family-curry-recipes 2 Link to comment
