Raja January 11 Share January 11 (edited) So Uncle Wilson gave Maya's family clemency. I wonder if Vanessa or someone else served as his regent while he recovered? I sure wasn't expecting him until Maya made it back to New York. Her powers do seem a riff off of Buffy's I wasn't expecting MacGyver-ing, or would that be Tony Stark-ing a gun out of roller skate parts. Edited January 11 by Raja Previously on Echo Link to comment
Raja January 11 Share January 11 My dinner with Uncle Wilson featuring Fisk tech? He could clearly read sign since Maya was a child but keeps up the mask of being unable to sign as he faked needing Wesley to translate in the Defenders saga. I guess it works for Fisk to be unwilling to use sign. With the family always in with Fisk locally, back when his name was not spoken on Daredevil I can head canon that he has been skimming the casino Link to comment
Capricasix January 11 Share January 11 Despite Maya saying that he never bothered to learn it, Fisk does know a little ASL because he used a few signs when talking to her in the final episode of Hawkeye (I wonder if we’ll ever get a second season of that show - I loved it). It’s been years since I watched Daredevil. Didn’t Vanessa die at some point? I guess I should watch it again! 1 Link to comment

That was a nice callback and definitely a Kingpin thing to do, pretending he can't understand what is going on right in front of him but knowing full well exactly what is being said. I just checked 1x06 of Hawkeye to see if there was some retconning going on with this but it's pretty consistent. Another character is present to translate to and from ASL. Kingpin does a bit of signing to Maya but nothing too complicated and the interpreter handles most of the conversation. My only criticism is that all the other characters in Maya's family are fluent in ASL even though she's been away since childhood and there are no other deaf characters that we see. But that is more of a criticism of television tropes in general, where you can learn something once and be good at it forever without having to practice. I will speculate that Maya's family help other deaf and hard of hearing folks in their community because it seems like something they would do for sentimental and practical reasons. 2 Link to comment

thuganomics85 January 12 Share January 12 Damn, Fisk! You do realize when you terminate someone from their job, that doesn't mean you have to terminate them from life itself, right?! Poor interpreter. Fisk doesn't really kill for no reason (even if reason includes just pissing him off), so I guess that was because he didn't want her to expose whatever she knew from translating those conversations. It doesn't matter if it's animated or real life, Disney is all about that generational trauma! I can understand why Chula might have felt the way she did and her actions aren't unrealistic, but she really did abandon Maya over the supposed sins of her father, and that decision is part of the reason Fisk was able to be a parental figure instead. I wonder if she'll find a way to rectify this or is she destined to nobly sacrifice herself instead? Tantoo Cardinal was excellent as always. Fisk would be that type of guy who keeps the hammer he killed his father with as some kind of reminder. I mean, his dad was a monster, but maybe try therapy instead, Kingpin? Looks like Maya turned down his offer but I have no idea where she is speeding off to now. And I'm guessing Fisk won't exactly take this rejection well. Off to see how this plays out! 3 Link to comment
tkc January 12 Share January 12 So if Maya accepted Fisk’s offer, would she become Queenpin, ruler of the Mayan Empire? Link to comment
Linderhill January 15 Share January 15 am I remembering wrong but wasn't that the wrong hammer? I thought Wilson killed his father with a claw hammer. The one he showed Maya was a ball peen hammer. 🤷♀️ 1 Link to comment

I guess the Daredevil Netflix series aren't as canon as Disney's talkers are saying it is. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_S_cnBif1MY Its too violent so you have to go to YouTube to see it. 1 Link to comment

Kel Varnsen February 6 Share February 6 The super contact lenses were cool, and the kind of available tech I would expect in a world with Pym particles. At the same time though wouldn't it have been way easier for the lenses to do a speech to text thing rather than the animated signing arms? Link to comment

I remember the snark going to a 90 Day Fiancé cast member who had not picked up her forth language in American Sign while in lockdown. And that was with few American's around except for her then online boyfriend and they had communicated by written English. I guess if you stay with they are their own unique ethnic group, in combination with American and Choctaw in Maya's case with a unique language then English text would not give as much feeling. But then I come back to Netflix Defenders saga being canon and Kingpin understood multiple languages but had his people around serving as translators as he hid that capability from people. And in the scenes of Echo he clearly understands Maya as the translator only spoke for him and not her. So I come down to he didn't want to be bothered to use his hands or still holding secrets, even as Uncle Wilson and not the Kingpin. Link to comment
