Yeah if you are in your 40s and still stocking shelves and cleaning bathrooms you have probably reached your peak earning potential.  Maybe they plan for her to work but if they have more kids they may want her to stay home.

Either way, it doesn't seem like a viable solution to their problem. Though having said that, he must be making some good money being on the show so there's that. He could be on the watch back shows and make more money with the 90 day franchise but the problem - at least to me - is that he's not that interesting and seems rather dull overall. It's not a deaf thing, it's a personality think IMO. But if I were him I'd be talking to TLC on how to get more screen time/money so he can bring her over. Though again, that does not solve his having enough money to support two other people, one being a kid that requires extras like constantly growing out of clothes, school stuff, etc. He just hasn't thought this through.

Also, in the Go Fund Me blurb it says they met in an online chat room for dead people. But is Sheila deaf too? I didn't think she was.

Apparently she is hearing impaired but not deaf.  I can’t remember if she wears a hearing aid or had a procedure done.

Ha!

I guess that's a Freudian slip of the keyboard! I didn't even see it until you pointed it out, thanks for the laugh!

Let’s just say I don’t think he is her dream husband.

She's a disabled single mother, holding out for the Hallmark Christmas movie solution would be an odd choice.

The thing is, there's no reason Sheila cannot find a job. So many of these 90 Dayers seem like the idea of getting an actual job is not in the realm of their reality. If Sheila has a job I vsnt remember what it is. And if she doesn't, she needs to get one.

I think on the Tell All she said she opened one of those crappy mini convenience stores like Mary and Brandan did.

I'm hoping Sheila and her son can get to the U.S..   Once she gets a work permit, I bet she could get a casino job since David works at one part time.    It may not sound glamorous, but cocktail waitress is very lucrative.   And she seems very intelligent, and hard working, and casinos love people like that for employees.

I think some devil/angel got into David's head telling him that he had fans and would fund his continuing story. There was never any thought other than Sheila would be working soon after receiving a social security and work authorization (green card). The only question would be if they would go for a child before Sheila gets any older.

She had a job before COVID. She said that jobs are scarce since the pandemic and I’m inclined to believe her. She’s a poor woman in a poor country; she doesn’t have tons of options at her fingertips.

Sheila is hard of hearing- she had an injury to one of her ears as child.

I am not mad at them for wanting to parlay their 90 Day experience into more income, I just think a Go Fund Me is a poor choice.

I don’t think David is lazy or anything, many Deaf people are under employed, and given the lack of family support he had, he’s doing well for himself. But taking care of two other people is a different kettle of fish than just yourself. I think after realizing the conditions Shelia lived in he had a financial wake up call.

Sheila will be able to work once she gets her authorization and her English is very good.

I can believe that. Also given the age and perceived health of her parents, I’m sure she had a lot on her plate caring for them. With it just being her father now, and her son is older it may be easier for her to work.

I have opinions about Go Fund Me, but isn’t David making money from the show? They are one of the most interesting couples- I think TLC would be glad to have them back for ratings.

Sheila’s mother’s passing was tragic (I felt terribly for all of them) but what does that have to do with David being able to support Sheila and her son in the USA?

I do think Sheila had a perception that David was wealthy, or at least more financially comfortable than he was (probably because of stereotypes about the USA). I don’t think David is in danger of not making his rent next month (when you’re single you can live well on little money compared to if you’re supporting others), but he doesn’t have the lifestyle she assumed he would have. I’m sure he saved for months or an entire year to take that trip to meet her.

If David and Sheila are in love and want to be together, I would think the more practical thing would be to save and wait an additional year for the paperwork to come through and cover both airline tickets/extra costs of supporting her and her son.

Or maybe he should move to her country. I'm not too familiar with their story but understand she is from a poor country and he is underemployed.  I also don't know if she is currently employed or is she will be employable once she gets to the states.  I hope she is spending the waiting time either working or honing her English skills and her sign language too, and her son should be too.  There is no way I will contribute to their GFM.

I agree - I read this re the employment rate in the Philippines.....

Overall, the employment rate in the country was 95.5 percent in September 2023, which was higher than the 95.0 percent rate in September 2022. In terms of magnitude, employment reached 47.7 million in September 2023, which is 83,000 higher than the same period last year.

However David can not work in the Philippines, they export, not import labor. You can look at that hearing kid Brendan on The Other Way spinoff in Negros Occidental sitting in a sari-sari store with his wife

I recall she worked in a sports bar that had shut down during the pandemic and I guess hasn’t recovered enough to rehire her?  Maybe she only wants bar work and that is why she isn’t working.

I thought I read somewhere that she owns a store, but maybe old news or untrue.  She has a lot of photos of herself on her instagram but for some reason a lot of -people do that, I just don't get it myself.

Yeah Brandan and Mary opened a similar  store together but it appeared to be making only pennies a day because of  price competition with similar stores.

It is the social media world which introduces most of these 90 day couples to each other.

As for the sari-sari stores they are side gigs. Many stay at home parents set up a window  full singles servings of laundry detergent a few small candies, etc. Being able to grow one into an actual rival to a chain convenience store that someone would drive or take a trike ride to is maybe a one in a million shot. And being in a city Sheila's location and competition for market share is even tougher than Brendan and Mary's in  more suburban subdivision type community.

If you think living under US lock downs was hard then take a look at the Enhanced Community Quarantines that Filipino cities were under. For someone in the hospitality industry you could only hope for any informal, or court order child support, extended family and godparents.

I remember when spending vacation with family in DR, there was a house about half a block away that had a little store in it. You could get gum or candy. I remember they also sold Marlboro (or one of the local brands) by the cigarette. So if you didn't want a whole pack, you could buy just one.
