Wait... I thought they originally said Tarik was off because he had a new baby. Did he really have COVID? He wouldn't be back so soon if he did, would he?

I don't know what he was drinking, but you can put any liquid in a glass and drink it and it doesn't have to be alcohol. Or, the whole bit was fiction to make a point.

I've just been frantically googling to see if Tarik had Covid or a baby. There's scant info out there, but I think, unfortunately, it was actually Covid since he didn't contradict anyone on his Twitter when they wished him well.  Damn.  I was surprised.

I thought the show last night was stellar.  All of it - inciteful as usual and quite funny.  Amber is a treasure.  As is Tarik.  I hope he suffers no long-term effects.

Tarik!

Tarik says he doesn't drink, so I was wonder what he is drinking when Amber is getting sloshed at the end of her show?

Do we know for sure that Amber is really drinking an alcohol beverage either?

And speaking of scripted vs. reality:
Do we know that Tarik was out for 2 weeks due to being hospitalized with Covid?? Because 2 weeks seems like a short time if he was that ill, and he seemed to have completely healthy breathing and voice.

Isn't 2 weeks generally how long someone would be out if they were EXPOSED to COVID and you had to be 100% sure they wouldn't manifest it? (vs. actually being sick)

Typically TV shows quarantine you for two weeks to make sure you are not showing any symptoms. I imagine that Tarik would have to get sick (COVID) and recover in less than one week, then quarantine for 2 weeks, to fit the timeline.

I'm not seeing the show on my Friday night TV listings for NBC. I hope they didn't pull it after only one try.

This vaguely worded Vulture article implies it might have just been planned for 2 weeks on NBC to draw viewers to Peacock: vulture.com/2021/02/the-amber-ruffin-show-will-air-on-nbc-for-two-weeks.html

In case you didn’t know, Amber’s show is still part of the free portion of Peacock that you get by just creating an account without giving a credit card or anything like that.

I'm surprised. It looks like Seth's show is new, and I thought they were on the same schedule.

Last night Seth had a rerun and Amber's was new. 🤷‍♀️

During the opening Amber "joked" that her team "worked for candy," and then later there was a mention of some of the supporting actors on her show not getting paid.
Is that true? Are they just working for free for the opportunity to be seen on TV and build their résumés???

I haven't watched last night's show yet, but there's no way people are working for free.  They have unions (yay!) and that just doesn't happen.

Also, Seth is always (or mostly always) a rerun on Fridays.

I think there are unpaid interns in a lot of high paying desirable jobs. I thought the joke was that he left The Amber Ruffin Show to be an unpaid intern on another show.

When Colbert got his audience back, I found the screaming and cheering obnoxious. I thought I had just gotten used to things being quiet before bedtime. But tonight I didn't mind the audience going wild for Amber. I guess I'm just banana wild over her, and not him, so I am more tolerant of the enthusiasm.

I ❤️loved❤️ when Amber teared up at the beginning, and
I ❤️loved❤️ the improv game at the end.

I also always appreciate the “How Did We Get Here?” history lessons, delivered straight faced, with no apologies or excuses.

I really appreciated that Amber’s audience was both vaccinated and masked—following the latest Delta variant guidelines from the CDC. It bothers me that Colbert’s audience is not masking again.

Amber seemed very distracted having a live audience.

I wasn't sure if it was the first time with a live audience, or maybe having just returned from over a month away--especially at the Olympics, but the scripted parts seemed as rough as her first few episodes of this first season.
I was relieved that the "improv" was a winner.
Anyway, just like she got up to speed a gajillion times faster than Colbert or Fallon did when they started their current gigs, I'm sure Amber and company will be back up to snuf by next week.

I'm over the live audience already. They're just noise and distraction. Boo hiss.

I am reaching full curmudgeon status, I suppose.

The biggest change seems to be that Amber now shouts her lines. She seems to be overexaggerating everything that she says, when before her comedy was a little more subtle.

Amber's back tonight.
Question:
Is it possible her tailor used fabric for this blazer that was from early 1960s upholstery/curtains?
(which I think would be cool)

ETA: Nope. Or, if it was early 60s vintage fabric, it has been bedazzled for the new millennium.

Edited by shapeshifter

When she started to take off her jacket and exchange it for a different one in the closet, I really thought she was going for the Mr Rogers thing where he'd change his sweater just like that at the beginning of his show. I'm going to tell myself she intended that. He gave common sense advice and pep talks, too!
