And that wasn't just Chris making excuses, Sherry herself confirmed it to Lorelai at the baby shower. Yeah, I don't think that counts as cheating since both Chris and Sherry thought it was over. If she hadn't been pregnant they would have broken up. 2 Link to comment

Even Jess in Teach Me Tonight was like, you want to do what now? when Rory was going on about it. LOL. If things didn't move in a plot-driven way, Jess' reaction would have started sowing the seeds of doubt in her regarding her plans for her life. Rory really only ever seemed like she was doing something that actually set her soul on fire when she was working on The Franklin at Chilton, and when she was planning stuff for the DAR in S6. And honestly, if the show was going to insist that this was truly Rory's dream, she should have been going ga-ga over Rachel in S2. Rachel actually did travel the world as a photojournalist and did all the things Rory supposedly wanted to do, but Rory basically ignored Rachel altogether other than to commiserate with Lorelai about how perfect she was. This is my take, as well. I would have liked it if the show had gone in a completely different direction and had her discover that she liked the life she was living planning social events for the DAR. We could see how her mother reacted to learning Rory wanted to be more like Emily than either had ever originally thought. We could see Richard struggling with the complicated emotions of loving his wife but wanting more for his granddaughter while trying to not hurt Emily with those feelings. We could see how Logan feels about Rory when she is no longer his "Ace" but is embracing the life of a socialite. We can see how the Huntsbergers feel about Rory when she no longer "wants to work" as that was their big issue in the beginning. And that's to say nothing for exploring Rory's complicated reaction to giving up what she thought she wanted her entire life and embracing a lifestyle her mother spent 20 years running away from. 4 Link to comment

That wouldn't have surprised me. Rory really liked that life. She liked the golf club and parties. She joined the DAR and remained in it to the end of the season and she really like organizing the fundraiser. 3 Link to comment

She seemed to pick that job like small children say they want to be a ballerina cowgirl astronaut. She would have been better suited to Academia, perhaps as an English professor. You know her grandparents would happily have paid her bills while she got her PhD. I have seen people being stubborn about what they wanted as children/teenagers even once they realized they are not that suited for it. And Rory gets a lot of stubbornness from Lorelei and Emily. I can see her being inspired by someone like Christiane Amanpour, she seems to be an amazing person, but we can admire someone and want to be like them without wanting to do the exact same things. I think Rory would be suited for teaching and/or writing novels, or running a local newspaper if those were still a big thing. Or, to make a crossover with another show, there was a TV show called The Bold Type about three young women working for a women's magazine a few years ago. It was good, but it received some criticism over how idealized the portrayal of the job was. One of the main characters basically had free reign and could write whatever she wanted, wasn't very good at receiving criticism and still made a great career. I can see Rory working in a job like that, lol. But anyway, Rory thriving in high school and then facing difficulties at college and work and having trouble dealing with changes and insecurity is one of the most realistic and relatable things on this show, IMO. 5 Link to comment
JAYJAY1979 July 5 Share July 5 Rory's brief stint living with Richard and Emily showed that she enjoyed the social aspects of that life, plus she showed a flair for organizing events with the DAR. It also showed that Lorelei was a lot more like Emily then she was willing to admit.. with her shutting Rory out of her life because she opted not to return to Yale and wanted to live the life Emily did. I think the sudden reversal of the story in the early part of season 6 was probably because fans were not happy with the Lorelei/Rory rift. It's interesting looking back at the series with a 2020s view and realizing that the show made great pains to mock more traditional/old school ways of life (ala Emily's role planning her husbands parties, the DAR, etc). As we saw in the revival special, Rory was even more unsettled in her 30s then she was during her college years.. and it was because she was doing what others expected of her. It's fitting she ends up becoming the editor of the Stars Hollow paper... a role she was a natural at. 5 Link to comment
Chaser August 13 Share August 13 They really had a chance to fix Rory in the revival. A woman in her 30s feeling stuck and aimless, life hasn’t turned out how she thought it would. So relatable! After so much focus on her relationships, she could have just focused on herself. No affair with Logan, which hurt her character and his. No Josh Groban. No Wookie. 3 Link to comment

Lorelai lived her life in defiance because she did not want to be a rich princess, which seems like that is the life Rory secretly wanted. I imagine the paper does not pay a living wage, particularly for New England which can be quite expensive I remember the little twirl she did when she first got her school uniform and could not believe she was a "private school girl" now. Not many blue-collar working-class girls have magical rich grandparents. I do not blame Rory for not wanting to work and leading a life of luxury. Her getting together with Logan (while he was engaged, I think) and she was dating that guy everyone kept forgetting, said that she was still enamored of that lifestyle. I know the original premise of the show is a spunky mother/daughter duo with insanely rich grandparents but I think the revival put the nail in the coffin that Rory is a regular girl who just wants a regular life. I mean would she even like Logan if he did not come from such a powerful family that even looks down at the Gilmores? 2 Link to comment

Or created a travel blog, and covered it in ads/received sponsorships, and lived off that and her trust fund. You see influencers who come from family money, all over the place. Instagram hadn't started by the end of the show (that I know of), but monetized blogs were just taking off. But she wanted the prestige of the New York Times. 2 Link to comment
BlancheDevoreaux September 2 Share September 2 I think Rory didn't know what she wanted - not uncommon for people in their early 20s (or even much later). The idea of being an ace reporter for the New York Times Ed very attractive... but so was being a reporter at a smaller paper where she could be a big fish in a small pond. Marrying Logan and finding themselves together was very attractive... but so was following Obama around on his campaign. As we grow up, we learn that dating yes to one dream also means saying no to another. She did that at the end of the series but AYITL showed that Rory regressed and wasn't comfortable choosing one dream over another - she wanted it all and ended up not getting all of any dream. 3 1 Link to comment

She wasn't willing to do any actual work it took to make her dream come true. She should have been able to springboard following Obama on his campaign into more, a different job, paper, something. But she didn't. She doesn't seem to have gotten anything solid. They mention two articles one for Altantic and one for another but she wasn't able to turn those into jobs at either magazine or somewhere else. We saw her have three job offers in the revival and wasn't willing to do the work for any of them. 4 Link to comment
