Oliver gets detention just for giving the principal a hard time? He never said he was gay, just didn't deny it. It was good that the gay football player's buddies straightened him out over the way he pretended to treat Oliver, but probably not realistic. He's a social star -- the peer nfluence usually goes in the opposite direction.

Katy can do the right thing. Who knew? And AnnaKat is growng up. Taylor, too, in baby steps.

I liked how many advantages Oliver got for being gay and even Cooper got to ride on his coattails, that was entertaining 😄

The problem was that Oliver kind of played the principal as a chump on the situation. Another problem is, a NORMAL non TV principal would have talked to Oliver in his office about everything. Plus, him tearing up the letter with his mouth. Yeah, this guy would have never been a principal to begin with. I know it's TV, but boy, I do get sick of how teachers or administrators are portrayed on TV. Either they are stupid, cater to bribes/school board or something even worst. At least on Goldbergs and Schooled, it is not only done in a comedic way, but where they also go: "Yeah, don't think so, not getting your way."

I wondered how Cooper would react to Oliver's "news" so I'm glad to see him be just as oblivious to this as anything else. It didn't even bother him that somebody assumed he was Oliver's boyfriend. Boy, things have changed since I was in high school. 

It's also refreshing how not homophobic Oliver was about the whole thing considering it's been sort of a running joke that other people thought he was gay even before this. Katie actually hoped he was gay so they could go on a gay cruise together. Oliver said one of his ex-girlfriends came up to him and said "Yeah that makes sense." 

In other news, I love Ed Weeks as Greg's brother Greg. We haven't seen Viv in quite awhile. I loved Doris and Angela laughing their asses off about Katie and Viv living across the street from each other and possibly being sisters-in-law.

The problem is the running joke has really come to an end. Why not just reveal, that Oliver, like most teenagers got a thought process in their head and started to act like they were better than others. Like MOST TEENS DO! At this moment, it will take Oliver being caught having sex with a girl before it ever comes to an end. Pardon the pun.

I missed this show!  I didn't realize how much until the scene with Doris and Angela in the restaurant.

I don't know if the "total acceptance of the gay guy" is realistic, but it's amazing how much things have changed in the last few years. It does give me hope.

I have always liked Leslie Bib, so I hope we see more of her and English Greg.

Teens are not only more accepting of it these days, hell you have school administrators not only running Pride Clubs, they are telling incoming freshman about it and to join. Of course, at 14, I think you are still trying to understand who you are, so now we have moved to a: "Well, we can accept you no matter what when you don't know who you are yet." Which can be more damaging. I got with Oliver and him basically seeing it as an advantage and of course trying to prove a point worked well. I like this Oliver more instead of: "I am going to wait for my real RICH family to come get me." Which is tiresome.

We have come a long way in two generations. A big city newspaper once ran a feature story on the plight of LGBT high school students that included many interviews with both out and closeted teens. In response, the Vice Principal of their school held a press conference the next day where she "assured" everyone that there were no gay students in her school, despite the actual student testimonies, which must have been devastating to those students. I'm glad this episode had a happy ending, but there is still a ways to go with many pockets of bullying and ignorance. God bless teens like the football player's teammates for calling him out on his faux sniping at Oliver while at the same time giving him the reassurance to come out.

Lots of teenagers know they're attracted to the opposite sex. As a teen who knew she was attracted to my own gender, I never take seriously the idea that "you're too young to come out." Some people just know who they are right from birth, others figure it out more slowly. But no one thinks it's damaging when a teen thinks they're heterosexual "at an early age" and no one worries about them being validated for it. It's not damaging to non-heterosexual kids for them to know who they are and be validated, either.

I worked for a principal who told one of my fragile students that he was probably the reason his parents had split up. Our high school principal was an alcoholic who refused to have anything to do with students. A counselor who barged into classrooms and berated and snapped at students confided that she was bothered that students never came to her with their problems. My stepson, who taught himself ASL so he could talk with hearing impaired students, was told by a high school teacher during class that he was stupid and would never amount to anything. And then struck him (which I didn't learn until long after the fact).

Not everyone who holds a teacher's certificate should be allowed anywhere near children. Others can never be paid their true worth.
