Post-Election Fears & Anxieties
EyewatchTV211 replied to Spartan Girl's topic in Current Events & Politics
So this is not super recent, but I don't understand how more attention wasn't given to this either. http://www.thedailybeast.com/cheats/2016/09/28/ten-state-election-databases-hacked.html?via=desktop&source=copyurl The government agencies KNOW Russia has attempted or successfully hacked states' election vendors or other election-related systems. 3 states that ended up being key (one being Florida) were successfully hacked. At the time, the states were told to watch for suspicious activity hinting at actual influence but most believed it "only" impacted registration information, which sounds bad to me. Shouldn't we be doing something to investigate/assure ourselves that actual results weren't impacted? And this fits with what that person's sister was saying. All of this on top of voter suppression. I need to head out to lunch with some friends, but I plan on posting a picture of my own adorable pup later (yes, I'm biased). :-) -

I haven't gotten caught up on posts yet, but I wanted to comment on the map similarly first. It was also posted on twitter and Joy Reid responded helpfully that most of that red is empty land. As Danny Franks said, much of it is sparsely populated. So that map isn't very representative or useful. -

@GHScorpiosRule Just checked - yes, Psych is on tonight (or technically morning). I don't have much room to record them. :-( I'm still avoiding the news, although I have returned to twitter. I mostly avoided facebook for other reasons even way before the election, so I'm not super interested in going back there except for specific reasons. -

ION has started playing Psych episodes again. But at 1AM!! WTH? I want to be watching but can't exactly do that on worknights. And can't stay up for long within one episode on weekends. -

I said I was going to stay away, but this terrified me some more. and http://boingboing.net/2016/11/11/hitlers-only-kidding-about.html And yes, @Spartan Girl, I am watching the Hallmark Christmas movies as an escape, especially as some of my regular shows are in repeats. Anyone who thinks Pence is a harmless, typical politician has clearly not done anything to inform themselves about him. He is TRULY scary. And the people he is suggesting for his cabinet who have previously been the usual Republican politicians may have been that way in the past, but they have shown that they have gone in scary, unprecedented directions while they have supported Trump. And those who say there are a lot of Republicans who hate Trump who will oppose him in the House and Senate. I think that's true for them on the inside. But I think they are still happy that the "GOP" actually won this thing and will do all they can to force Trump's hand towards their agenda. In that picture of Ryan and Trump, Ryan looked much happier than Trump did. Meanwhile, I'm back to being extremely pissed off regarding the Supreme Court pick. Constitutionally, President Obama should be the one picking the replacement. The Senate has been acting unconstitutionally. I don't know law as others here do, but usually things can be done when something is unconstitutional. And the Republicans' claims that it should be chosen by whoever the people choose - well Trump may be the country's president, the majority of people did NOT choose him. So maybe they should support something else not in the Constitution - the person who isn't president but who had the most popular votes gets to choose! Why not? Not any crazier and childish than what they always do. Meanwhile, while I've enjoyed the support I've gotten from commiserating here, I think I'm out for now to find other support networks and other things to do. This place is no longer a "post-election anxiety support thread" for me when I have to justify my feelings and provide ignored proof and facts, as usual, to support my thoughts.- 2.9k replies

I need to go to bed, so I'm not going to respond in length to all of your points. I will say that even IF Trump really doesn't believe these things he is saying right now, IF he appoints to cabinet positions the people he says he is going to, THOSE people do believe in these positions and have taken action. I think many people fear them and Pence even more than Trump. I probably do, although I fear the unknown with Trump since he makes things up as he goes along. And I fear Trump's thin skin and trigger finger with the nuclear codes.- 2.9k replies

Well I challenge you to do more than just live your life the way you have been living it. You admit that it's scary as hell. Going about everyday life like nothing has changed isn't doing more to help than people who are staying home and doing nothing for now. I myself have been going to work and living my normal life. I've been doing it through periods of extreme emotion like others here. But that isn't enough for me. I plan on taking steps, no matter how small, to try to make a difference. Don't criticize those here when you aren't doing anything to help either. -

So new question then. Since you apparently do not support Trump and yet are not experiencing any of this "weakness," what are YOU doing to take positive action instead? Maybe you will give some people here ideas in that area. ETA: I'm going to offer one suggestion that someone who worked for Congress recommended. She said, "But, the most effective thing is to actually call them on the phone. At their district (state) office. They have to talk to you there." Better than tweeting/facebook, which they don't read. Better than emails. Letters are okay, but not as good as phone calls.- 2.9k replies

Well here is why people are grieving: http://johnpavlovitz.com/2016/11/09/heres-why-we-grieve-today/ And the way people are responding here fits with what experts have identified as the natural stages of grief. For most, this grief will not last long term and is perfectly normal. To criticize people for experiencing normal human reactions is unfair. I am confident that many of these people will come out of this fighting harder than before. If you are not grieving at all, that's great for you, but it doesn't make you better or worse than anyone else.- 2.9k replies

She may not have been as popular as Obama, but numbers indicate that it may not be true that Hillary lost because she's such a terrible candidate. Besides President Obama, by the end of this it is likely that more people voted for her than other presidents/candidates in recent history. http://www.slate.com/blogs/the_slatest/2016/11/11/did_clinton_fail_to_turn_out_registered_democrats.html- 2.9k replies

Another petition that may not do anything, but can't hurt to try and takes less than a minute: https://petitions.whitehouse.gov//petition/appoint-garland-now-senate-has-waived-its-rights If we could have the supreme court vacancy filled now like it should be, I'd feel a marginal amount better. -

More evil numbers, courtesy of the NY Times: Hillary won by more than Gore in 2000, Nixon in 1968, or Kennedy in 1960, it seems. Currently at 2 million and counting. And on a very sad note regarding what Trump has unleashed, from USA Today: Saudi student assaulted in Wisconsin, dies of his injuries -

Another company to support is Starbucks. In addition to having shown support for Hillary for awhile, they have spoken in support of our diverse society. And I also just went on twitter for the first time and saw this retweeted: "Sitting here in Starbucks, which is training its local employees on aiding LGBT people targeted by hate crimes & how to provide safe space."- 2.9k replies
