  1. For goodness sake, how many nemesises does Robyn need? And the character and actress weren't compelling either.

Like everyone else, I prefer the cases-of-the-week with Robyn helping the little guy. There shouldn't be any CIA plots, but I'm willing to tolerate a couple episodes per season.

Also, who decided that since we made it to season 4, screw it, let's just have a sword fight?

I did LOL at that, just because of how ridiculous it was.

But I am glad the show is back, hopefully it's back to its regular format next week.

Google insists on telling me that Mary McDonnell plays Colter's Mom and Wikipedia says she joined the cast 2022. So I watched the pilot wondering when she would show up. No idea what happened but I guess the fact that they initally went for a relatively big name for the part means that Moma Colter definitely has a couple of figurative and probably one literal skeletons in the closet. No disrespect to Wendy Crewson. (Also: during her first scene I kept wondering what the hell Mary McDonnell had done to her face.)

She was initially cast, but dropped out for whatever reason. There wasn't really any news reported about the recasting.

  3. Okay, so some clunky expository dialogue and cliché tropes, but I still thought this was good. Willing to stick around and see more of Colter's adventures. It's starting out stronger than some other shows.

Will we see Phoebe again? Is Molly going to be a series regular in Season 2?

Molly will continue to be a series regular in Season 2. … We wanted to be honest to the character and honor what she’s going through mentally and not have her panic disorder solved in an episode and have everything just go back to normal. We really wanted to put her character through something, but she is taking this other position. She will have stories there, and we’ll go from there, but she is definitely going to continue to be a big part of the fabric of the show.

  6. Ugh - they really had to ruin a pretty decent ending with a downer Season 2 tease.

Anyway -- a few good things: Bombing mystery is solved, so we can move on from that. Got rid of one assistant - should have been both, but, baby steps. Rose is back! Kylie's got a job at the FBI, which is what I figured would happen.

Not related to this episode; but if they actually show Alec in the classroom more, that might be a better place for the behavioral theory exposition next season.

Willing to give this show a second chance -- if they actually revamp a few things.

  7. Season finale:

Alec and Marisa are close to finding the culprit of the church bombing. Kylie gets an interview with the FBI, but is pulled into the investigation. Rose tracks down a witness. Phoebe and Rizwan make a discovery that sheds light on the truth.

    Per this article https://www.thewrap.com/cw-brad-schwartz-dennis-miller-interview-linear-tv-strategy/

it was Warner Bros' decision to end the show per the CW bosses, because they didn't want a competing Superman product in the marketplace (referring to the upcoming DC movie Superman: Legacy).

    Boo, hiss

Sounds like someone's trying to shift the blame. Didn't they say before that the show was too expensive? With the CW bloodbath that happened the last couple seasons, I doubt this was getting a fifth season in any case. Also, in no way is this CW show competition for a movie that wasn't going to come out until after the show ended - even if it had a fifth season.

... Like I said they are all just made up stories and in the end the main goal should just be to tell an interesting story not to match up with something that was told previously in another medium.

This is the thing. I get that people want to see what is in the comics, but film is a different medium. It's never going to be exactly the same. For many reasons.

Clark Kent, Midwestern farmboy?  He should be white.

This one I completely disagree with. Clark is an alien and changing his race can create interesting character dynamics while staying true to his characterization. Particularly since we are now looking at a Clark raised in the 90’s or later.

Yeah, this is what I meant that some of these characters aren't actually 'white'. Kal-El is an orphaned refugee from another galaxy, why does that mean he has to be 'white'.

    • Michael B. Jordan as Johnny Storm did not help make Fant4stic a better movie in 2015.
    • Madame Web is not going to be remembered for its diversified, female led cast - - and the same thing goes for The Marvels.
    • The casting for The Eternals was a PR orgy (though not very triggering since the source material wasn't well known).  The results were middling and nobody seems to be demanding a sequel..

And? Movies with white male stars also flop, and movies with non-white casts are successful as well.

(As if MBJ was the problem in that movie -- LOL!)

  11. Some stray Season 3 thoughts:

I know it's a fool's errand to expect consistent continuity, and that I can (and have) read explanations online, but it's still an odd choice to have so many big unexplained changes from the previous season.

They still suck at conclusions, but I'd say the writing was stronger in general. I know it can be tough to be the straight man, but Craig is still the weak link.

I was going to commend them for the great casting of Young Lister in the 'Timeslides' episode, but then I read it was actually Craig Charles' brother, LOL!

The characters created in the '60s were predominately white because the US at the time was 90% white.  It wasn't out of meanness.  People created characters that looked like the country.

Yes, the country with a history and culture of racism, discrimination, and segregation that would filter down through literature and the arts.

...  But if they're white, so what?  Why is it so wrong that they're white?  ...

Nothing inherently wrong*, but whiteness has generally been the default standard, and with a film adaptation there's an opportunity to do something different that reflects the world today.

*(although I think some of these 'icons' might not be as 'white' as some people think.)

You wouldn't race swap Superman or Peter Parker or Wolverine because they're iconic, and people expect them to look a certain way.  And the Fantastic Four belongs in that group of very special iconic characters.  They were the first Marvel comic, and the foundation of the Marvel universe.  Out of respect, they shouldn't be race swapped.

It's interesting that you think casting an actor of color for "iconic" characters is a demotion, or only for 'lesser' characters.

My question would be why were all those characters originally white and was their whiteness an important part of their characterization?

It probably wasn't intentional when he was originally developed, but I've heard the argument (and I agree) that for Batman (Bruce Wayne, specifically) his white privilege and generational wealth are essential to his character, so it makes sense he's white.

However, most characters that happened to colored beige in the comics don't really have any characteristics specifically tied to whiteness.

ETA: I'd totally be down for casting actors of color for Wolverine and Peter Parker. Give me an Native Logan and Asian-American Peter, which would make sense with their backstories.

  15. More casting news:

'Brandon Jay McLaren & JB Tadena Join Season 3 Cast'

His openness about his life and his carpentry skills keep Jeremy in Thony’s orbit as she comes to rely on him for help. But below his trustworthy, charismatic façade lurks a sinister secret about his true character, a truth that will have dire consequences for all involved once revealed.

They also seem to have completely abandoned the story about how Ben leapt allegedly to save Addison-- and Addison was supposed to be the leaper.

Didn't that pretty much get wrapped up in the Season 1 finale?

  17. They made a big deal about this Gideon character coming in, but then they hardly tell us anything about him or his interest in the chip data, and we're about to end the season. They really need to re-prioritize their subplots.

And yeah, I'm also wondering why they introduced the idea that they can bring Ben back, but then they haven't followed up on that.

Thought the leap story was good; was nice to see Ben have to do the actual work of the person he leapt into.

So the 'Addison has a boyfriend' arc has been a waste of space. *Shocker.*

I'm sorry that Fiege doesn't approve of Stan Lee's work.

He said that? Every adaptation has changes and that doesn't necessarily have anything to do with "approval".

But I want to see the characters onscreen that are in the comic books.

I don't think they announced any characters that aren't in the comic books. But if you mean they need to look exactly like the printed page, that's almost never going to happen for a variety of reasons, especially in live-action.

    ... I don't want to see a white Miles Morales, ...

...  If Fiege made a film about the Beatles, would he race swap them?  At some point it becomes ridiculous.

    Not the same situation.

It's 2024, and the filmmakers can't only cater to white American teen boys in the 60's like when these characters were first created.

  19. I'm not really interested in the bombing mystery, and I also was not interested in sympathizing with the bomber, so this episode was mostly a slog for me.

It's weird to me that they have Kylie's subplot of her looking for a new career, at the same time she's the show's Expert Computer Hacker.

I know the show's gimmick is the psychological/behavioral themes, etc; but they're going to have to figure out a better way to present those because it's kinda tedious and annoying to have that exposition in the dialogue every third scene.
