  1. If Nathan Chen doesn’t medal, NBC will run him out of Pyeongchang on a rail.
  2. https://www.nytimes.com/2018/02/07/sports/olympics/russia-womens-figure-skating.html
  3. I hope that’s not the case . I still wish he would work with a jump specialist; if he had even one reliable quad (and a more consistent triple axel), his medal count would go up.
  4. Lorraine McNamara and Quinn Carpenter. I started rooting for them once I saw their short dance at Nationals.
  5. I feel letdown by these Nationals—the Shibs’ mistake, Jason Brown’s mistakes, Johnny and Tara’s obnoxiousness.
  6. This is just craziness: https://www.nytimes.com/2018/01/04/sports/olympics/yuzuru-hanyu.html?rref=collection%2Fsectioncollection%2Fsports&action=click&contentCollection=sports&region=rank&module=package&version=highlights&contentPlacement=9&pgtype=sectionfront
  7. Make that “Shoma, Javi, Misha Ge, even Yuzuru,” and I agree completely.
  8. Oh, I’m sorry to hear that about Joshua Farris. I couldn’t imagine how he could make a comeback after all his injuries, but I didn’t know he was in such bad shape. I always liked his skating.
  9. I couldn’t enjoy the men’s free skate because Tara and Johnny were annoying me so much. (Especially Tara.) I like Nathan Chen—I have ever since he was a little kid predicting he’d go to the 2018 Olympics—but NBC is cramming him down our throats. Terry Gannon even compared him to Dick Button. Really, Terry? Dick Button is there; you want to say that to his face? And Jason Brown, whom I’d rather watch than any other American man (and some of the foreign men, too). I respect his devotion to Kori Ade, but maybe he needs a jump coach. Someone like Tom Z. I’m so happy Mirai made the team. Too much braggadocio: Rippon, Cain and Leduc, Hubbell and Donohue (whom I love, but not as much as I love the Shibutanis). Don’t come in announcing you intend to win gold and won’t be satisfied with less. (Lots of non-Ashley Bridgestone ads tonight.) It just occurred to me: Wasn’t Joshua Farris planning to come back this season?
  10. Weir described Kostner's skating as "bourgeois and otherworldly."
  11. Weir made an interesting comment about Max Aaron: that he's a cold (i.e., unemotional) skater but chooses "warm," schmaltzy music. "Lion King" and "Phantom"? Oy.
  12. Johnny said that the judges may be too harsh on Mirai, and I agree. And I want to smack Medvedeva's arm down.
  13. "The bed looks like a dead animal act."
  14. Homer: "Oh, why do my actions have consequences?"
  15. Next to this crew, the Project Runway contestants are paragons of sanity and sportsmanship.
  16. Nathan Chen won the U.S. International Classic with a clean quad loop--the first time he had tried it in competition. He now has every quad except the axel. Not sure how I feel about that. I think Chen is a great talent, but quad mania has gotten a little too maniacal.
  17. Homer: "How many times do I have to say I'm sorry?" Marge: "You haven't said you were sorry!" Homer: "I was hoping the number might be zero."
  18. Homer: "Your conscience! Lisa, don't let that pushy little weenie tell you what to do!"
  19. Homer: "How dare you torture my children with Mozart!" Sideshow Bob: "You know Mozart?" Homer: "I call all music Mozart!"
  20. Tara Lipinski: "That is how a world champion defends her title." Michelle Kwan fan: "How the hell would you know?"
  21. Yes! "As God is my witness, I'll never be hungry again!"
  22. Papadakis and Cizeron move up from third place to win their third straight European title. Cappellini and Lanotte in second, Bobrova and Soloviev third.
  23. There should be a Medvedeva Rule limiting the number of jumps a skater can do with an arm overhead.
  24. Trixie is badass enough to show up in South Africa in a Pucci sundress. So many powerful, effective women--Trixie, Barbara, Sister Julienne, Shelagh, Dr. Myra. (And so good to see Sinead Cusack again.)
  25. Homer: "Oh, you want the Mr. Plow who does driveways. This is Tony Plow, from Leave It to Beaver."
