Saved from yet another dog case. Thanks, Toaster. You bravely watch the crappy cases so I don't have to. Any chance you also watch people's court and/or hot bench? I have a TV court show addiction from which I desperately need to recover. If I could cut down my three hours per day down to 90 minutes or so, I'd be golden!

That comment threw me for a loop. During the initial stages of the case, I thought they met through online gambling, which I think is a terrible idea. But then this comment was made about online gaming, and I wasn't sure what Bakman was talking about.

Simple algebra? Talk about an oxymoron (at least for me!) There are some people, myself included, who totally freeze up when given a math problem. Since they saved this category for last, I assume these three contestants are not good at math and probably, like me, have math anxiety.

While I have no problem with church-going folks (my parents are born again Christians but still support their gay daughter), anytime a litigant mentions they were on their way to church when something happened I immediately know not to believe them.

I am in love with this idea. Toaster? Your thoughts? I already know if I see pit bull in a Toaster recap I can skip it. A gavels up or down would be awesome.

I thought we were in sweeps. These episodes sound boring as hell. Correct me if I'm wrong, Toaster.

She mentioned in her hallterview that she needed the money to get the albums redone because she didn't have any money. So another genius who blew all their money on a stupid wedding.
-
I give her marriage five years tops. There's no way someone would put up with that kind of lunacy much longer than that.

JJ's rulings almost always seem mood-based to me, and also based on whether or not she likes a litigant. I agree that she has handled other similar cases differently than she handled this one. I also think JJ would have been more sympathetic if the plaintiff hadn't danced around the question. When JJ asked her if she'd submitted to her insurance, the plaintiff started yammering about an accident she had when she was young. I think if she'd given a more sensible response JJ may have been more sympathetic. The other thing the plaintiff could have done was gone through her insurance and then gone to JJ's show to sue for the deductible. She seemed flighty to me, and JJ does not like flighty.

If the other driver doesn't have insurance and you do, the thing to do is file a claim with your own carrier. They will take care of the claim, minus your deductible, then do what's called subrogation, which is attempting to re-coup the money from the actual at-fault party. If they successfully subrogate, you can get your deductible back. Even if they aren't able to successfully subrogate, your CLUE report should indicate either a not-at-fault accident or a claim under unisured/underinsed motorist property damage. (Not every state offers UMPD and UIMPD. Here in Arizona, you can only buy uninsured/underinsured for bodily injury, NOT property damage.) Anyway, in theory, having an uninsured or not-at-fault claim should not negatively affect your rate. One of the benefits to having your carrier handle it is that your carrier will notify the DMV that you were struck by an uninsured driver. So, if the plaintiff ends up going through her own insurance, the irresponsible defendant will likely have her license suspended and possibly be fined as well for driving without insurance. I sincerely hope that happens, because her laughing in the hallterview as if it was funny that she had no insurance really ticked me off. I bet she won't be laughing when the plaintiff files the claim and she ends up in trouble with DMV. Side note: With all of that being said, last year my car was struck while parked (in my assigned parking spot at my office, no less) by a driver who failed to leave a note. Although the accident was obviously not my fault, my rates went up a little because I had been receiving a claim-free discount. Prior to this, I hadn't had a claim since 2001. And, even though this claim wasn't my fault, it was a claim nonetheless. So I lost my claim-free discount, which was something like 5% of my total premium. I won't get it back for three years. That kind of shit is why people hate insurance companies, including those of us working in the industry!

We finally get a contestant from Tucson, my town, and she annoys me by starting with high valued clues then flames out. So I couldn't even root for her. Oy. Then the other female contestant kept choosing clues by saying the full name of the category, which drives me bananas! That was an annoying game for me as a viewer.

Assuming Mr. Ruiz is here legally (most illegal immigrants don't go anywhere near the justice system, he is also missing out on his social security contributions and is working without the protection of work comp insurance. It's just a really bad idea all around, for the employer and the employee. I think Fedex was fined something like $300 million when they tried to cheat the taxman by classifying their employees as independent contractors. So the employer may save a little money if they don't get caught, but it's so not worth it. And for this genius to go on national TV and admit he wasn't paying taxes is the epitome of stupidity.

That parking lot lady case wouldn't know the truth if it slapped her in the face. I know it's my naivete, but I'm always surprised when I meet older people who lie. That seems like more of a kid thing that a senior thing. Shouldn't you be finished lying by the time you're her age? I'm in my early 40s, and I can't even remember the last time I told a lie (other than you don't look fat in those jeans, your new haircut doesn't look bad, or something like that).

I only got Equus because it was the only play I could think of in the moment involving a horse. I'm also finding the clues during this tournament to be easy. However, I think the teachers are performing better than they have during the last couple of teacher tournaments I remember. Yes, there have been some bonehead answers, but I think it's going pretty well. They were probably 40 years old. When you're that age, everyone over 30 seems really old! I went back for a high school reunion and was surprised that quite a few of my former teachers are still teaching. I graduated in 1990 and, back then, I thought most of them were pretty old.

I had the exact same thought while watching that case. People rag on HOAs, but I'm so freaking glad I have one. I'd hate to have to live next to that eyesore. I have a neighbor who converted his garage into a freaking nightclub, complete with a bar, patrons parking all over my block, and pool tables. A couple of his guests, a man and a woman, got into a fistfight in my driveway. One call to my HOA and that shit was over. I'm sure there are some horrible HOAs, but mine does exactly what it's supposed to do. /end rant I disagree with you. I love that movie, and I love that scene. I feel the same way about parking as JJ does. If I've been waiting patiently for a spot and one opens up, anyone who ducks in to get it before me is a grade A asshole. The defendant's behavior is exactly what's wrong with our society; it's full of me-first attitude and civility has gone out the window. He didn't care that the other guy had an appointment to get to as well. It's his freaking world. The plaintiff over-reacted for sure (although punching him and knocking his tooth out first is also an over-reaction), but I completely understand his ire. In that situation, I wouldn't get out of my car and start a physical confrontation, but I'd definitely call the other driver an asshole. Of course, someone who does something like that doesn't care that they're an asshole. But it would make ME feel better!

Thanks for sharing this. The most interesting thing to me about that whole article is that the JJ producer encouraged her mother to get angry and talk back to JJ. I know it makes for good TV, but anyone who's seen an episode of JJ ought to know better than to do that.

Every time I tell myself I need to scale back the JJ viewing and do something more productive after my daily dose of Jeopardy she has an episode block that draws my vulnerable ass right back in. Good God. Today's new episodes were epic. Epic! That sly fox has been saving some doozies for February sweeps. I don't even know where to begin, but I will say I knew as I was watching that I'd have to pop the Bluetooth keyboard onto my iPad for all I wanted to say. A touch keyboard would not suffice tonight. The funny thing is I was so busy at work today I didn't get a chance to read Toaster's always awesome recaps, so I was completely surprised when I watched tonight. The Honda case was one for the ages, and I am thrilled, thrilled I tell you that JJ let the madness take over for a change. You cannot harness that kind of cray cray. You just gotta let it run its course. I only drink decaf, and I felt like I'd had five shots of espresso after watching that plaintiff. And she said she's always like that? Girlfriend needs to slow down with the pills and also stop driving. She's from Boston. Don't that have a pretty decent subway there called the T or something like that? I sympathize with anyone who has a medical condition, but my sympathy ends when said condition is used as an excuse for bad, irresponsible behavior. Instead of putting $9,000 down on the Honda, why didn't she put a little less down and save some of that money for her next medical emergency? Hell, she could have prepaid the car insurance for a year. And there's no excuse for racking up that much in tickets. Just irresponsible all around. Of course that's also reflected by her credit score. If you have a down payment that hefty and still can't get approved for a car loan, your credit is jacked the fuck up. Majorly. Another thing she could have done with her $9K is buy a decent used car. Why would someone whose finances are so precarious due to health issues think they need a brand new Acord? And she had a BMW prior to that? Girl needs to check her priorities. I'll comment on the geriatric crackhead later. I need to re-watch that one and take it all in. The trust-raiding ex-stepfather garners no sympathy for me, despite his crocodile tears. He knew what he did was wrong as he was doing it. And he did it anyway. I'm glad JJ put some strings on the verdict. He belongs in jail.

You probably wouldn't have kids with him either.

I love when you mention Levin. I'm not a fan either, but your hatred of him amuses me for some reason! That defendant was a real POS, and once again we wonder why these women put up with such losers. Is being alone so bad? If you must date a loser, why would you have children with him, especially when you know he doesn't support the kids he already has. Ugh.

I had the exact same reaction with regard to FJ. I thought it was an instaget. I like Karen. The teachers tournament is one of the tournaments I usually like, but the last coupe have been underwhelming, Let's hope we get some bright ones for this year's.

I once had a coworker say to me, "I'd like black people more if they were all like you." Stupid bitch thought she was complimenting me. Notice I said "once had a coworker." She didn't make it through that afternoon.

You leave my Byrd alone! Some of my favorite moments on the show involve him! Today's case was a perfect example of them spending a half hour on a case that didn't warrant it. I just couldn't bring myself to care about any of the litigants. A full dismissal was absolutely the right verdict. JJ could have disposed of that nonsense before the first commercial break. Only because we're discussing it here, Judge Milian has two expressions I use often, albeit in English. One is, "Where you're going I've already been, sat down, and had hot chocolate." The other is, "You're sticking your finger in front of the sun and pretending it's not there." There's also one about rice and mangoes or something like that, but I can't recall it at this moment. I also quote JJ, usually when I'm driving. There's a lot of me shouting "you're a moron" to other drivers who can't hear me.

That parent represented everything that's wrong with thies entitled generation. My son didn't get an apology. WAH!!! Somebody call the freaking wambulance! And I have no doubt that the first words out of her stupid mouth were, "I'm an attorney. I'll sue you." MM's right; there's nothing wrong with being an attorney or mentioning that you're one, but we all know how this woman mentioned it...threateningly. Was she also suing for legal bills? From whom? Herself? Good on the owner for refusing to apologize to her 9-year-old son. I can just see her getting that voice mail while, no doubt, berating some poor store clerk at the mall and then deciding to march over there in triumph and demand an apology. Screw you and your entitled kid who's throwing tantrums at age nine.

I liked the slower pace of this episode. As a viewer, I want to know the layers of a character; it connects me better to the overall story. In order to give us those layers, shows need episodes like this. It's not filler to me at all. I am already fascinated by a few of the characters, and we're only three episodes in. As a few posters said above, I don't need shocking twists and turns every episode. For me, less is more. I also don't feel a need to compare this show to any of Shonda's shows. I'm still very much into Scandal and HTGAWM and am just happy that there are so many strong dramas on television, especially since we're seeing great parts for actors of color as well. It's a great time to be a fan of TV!

Why is it so hard for neighbors to get along? Who in the world would want all that drama in their lives? Your home is your sanctuary from all the bullshit that comes with everyday life. I can't for the life of me figure out why we see so many cases that involve people who can't figure out how to live next to each other without all the drama. The plaintiff in the log through the Jeep case was named Tammy. So, naturally, I could only think of that awful movie with (not awful at all) Melissa McCarthy. We had a real-life Tammy. She seems miserable and nasty. The audacity she had to yell at her neighbor about kids playing when one of the kids was her boyfriend's kid! Her son made JJ crack up, which made me crack up. I love when JJ laughs. I had an opposite experience years ago when my crazy aunt and her daughter went on Ricky Lake. Rather than anticipating it, we all had a sense of dread!
