Aww, that looks sweet. I'm always up for quirky British comedy. I spotted Molly from Sherlock, love her.

The main guy is apparently in the Ricky Gervais show After Life.

I hope you can track it down.  I'm in the Chicago area and there are a couple of theaters that are often the only ones showing the quirky British comedies, but Brian and Charles is in more than those usual ones.    It's in a lot more theaters than The Phantom of the Open, for example.

If you're in the mood for something original and quirky and sweet, I recommend it.  I don't like sci fi or fantasy so I was steering clear, but for some reason decided to go anyway and am glad I did.

An addict and former inmate that lies? I’m shocked, SHOCKED.

The thing is, she didn't even try to lie.  She just mumbled something about "facts" and changed the issue right back on Emersyn's mom being judgmental.  Whether she's judgmental or not--did Mason's mom have to go back to jail or not?  If not, say so, and Mason's mom has nothing to be judgmental about.  And if she did go back to jail, why?  Maybe Mason's mom does have something to be judgmental about.

The woman declared in disgust that the sofa was "blue-ah". Is this some new speech pattern or am I only now noticing it? I'm hearing it in a certain demographic (always females) a lot lately.

It's a thing.  I first remember it from Chelsea, from 16 & Pregnant and Teen Mom.  Her boyfriend's name was Adam, and she always pronounced it Adam-uh.  I always picture a slight foot stomping on the "uh."

This was well over 10 years ago, and it's become much more prevalent since then.

Yes, I would like to know what Mason's mother did to violate her parole also because I'm kind of nosy that way.

Me too, but it's not just being nosy.  Emersyn's mom said Mason's mom went back to jail, and said it was public record.

I don't know what constitutes parole violations, but assuming she did go back to jail, I think it would be important to know whether it was for failing to submit some paperwork or for failing a drug test or cutting off an ankle monitor.

Remember when Emersyn's mom said Mason's mom couldn't leave the county, and Mason's mom quickly and smugly corrected her?  Where was that reaction when Emersyn's mom said Mason's mom had gone back to jail?  She didn't respond, "It was an administrative thing--I mailed my Form 4026-B on time but delivery was delayed.  It's all been fixed now."  Nope.  She didn't address the facts at all, and instead accused Emersyn's mom of being judgmental.  Who cares if she's judgmental?  What are the facts?

Thank you!  I saw that teaser, and I'm pretty sure it was Noah.  Yet the episode ended  without any mention of it.  And it was a big part of why I watched the episode at all.

  6. What I want to know is what Emersyn's mother was referring to when she said Mason's mother went back to jail the week before, or whatever.  Mason's mother didn't deny it; she just said something about facts, and accused Emersyn's mother of continuing to be judgmental.  And Emersyn's mother replied that it's public record.

Did I just miss it?  Or is this more of what drives me insane about the tell-alls--the one time we should be able to get an answer, and we don't.

I was stunned, too, considering that SA is the second largest city in Texas!

San Antonio is kind of weird.  Despite its size, it doesn't seem like a major metropolis, like Dallas or Houston.  Austin was always kind of major, even before it was so big, because of the college and state government, and the culture.  San Antonio has always been more second tier.

But even so, I was surprised at the cheap prices the HH was seeing there.  They didn't ever say what neighborhood or even what section of town the houses were in so I assume they weren't the really good areas, and they weren't great houses, but still.  It's like it's not even on the same continent as Austin, much less 80 miles down the road.

    I loathe Florida...America's basement.

People who travel fulltime in RVs have to have a domicile somewhere, and for those who are under 65 and have to buy individual health insurance, until about five years ago the two best choices were Florida and Texas.  I'd always say, "Florida and Texas:  Race for the bottom."

Not for nothing does Florida have the "Florida man" stereotype, which transcends politics, although I do think heat and humidity can lead people to do very strange things, and having alligators available can't help things.

I disagree.  He thought she should buy a house with a kitchen she doesn't like and live in the house with a kitchen she doesn't like so that when she later sells it, it will be more marketable because people want white cabinets.  A couple of things:  As noted above, nobody knows if white cabinets will still be popular when she decides to sell, so she could very well live with a kitchen she doesn't like for years, only to have to change it anyway when she sells?  What kind of advice is that?  It makes me wonder about his real estate savvy.

But more importantly, don't most people buy houses primarily to live in?  Sure, some people get a starter home they don't love, but I assume they don't buy something they hate if there are other options out there they can afford and don't hate.  I would think a place that makes the buyer as happy as possible would be the real objective.

Lawrence really does seem to be of very low intelligence, and I was dismayed at how Lily's mom thought he was such a catch.  However, in comparison to the other boys on this show, dumb old Lawrence is looking attractively benign.

Also, I forgot to give a shout-out to the chef/wedding organizer at the venue Lily and Lawrence went to--he pronounced "dais" correctly, which you almost never hear.

And I noticed that one of the producers pronounced "Tiarra" like it should be pronounced, not the "tee-air-uh" they use.  So he doesn't watch the show--I wonder what he thought after work that day.

I think Alyssa worked up a romantic relationship  with Ryan in her own head that didn’t actually exist in real life yet.
Really- did she think Ryan was going to cuddle up with Lindsay at this getaway?

I, too, think she worked up a romantic relationship with Ryan in her own head, and I think it's completely understandable.  Men don't fly halfway across the country in search of new female friends.  But I don't think she thought Ryan was going to cuddle up with Lindsey; Alyssa bristled when she realized she was going to be blindsided at the getaway if she brought Ryan and it turned out Ryan and Lindsey were friends without her knowing about it.  As she said, that would make her look like "an idiot."  And I completely agree with her.  Because everybody there would think Alyssa and Ryan were there as a couple, just like Chris and Olivia, and would titter when it comes out that Alyssa didn't even know Ryan was "talking" to someone else on the show.  As I said she'd look like a dupe.

I compare what Ryan did, in not telling her he was communicating with someone who was also going to be at the getaway, with what Olivia did, which was to stay in a separate room from Chris for two reasons:  (1) she and Chris don't really know each other (which now that I think about it is kind of a ridiculous hesitation on this particular show), and (2) out of respect for Alyssa.  Leaving aside whether Alyssa deserves any respect, Olivia was acknowledging that there were other people and other entanglements that should be considered.

If you're invited somewhere by someone who's bringing you into the group, it's just good manners to let them know beforehand that you already know someone in the group.  And moreso if there are romantic notions in the air, and you've done pretty much the same thing with the person who's bringing you as you've done with the other person who's going to be there.

I hope to never see Alyssa on my tv screen again.  She’s a spoiled princess who appears to think people can’t be friends with anyone but her.

That wasn't her beef.  Her problem was that she was going to show up at the getaway with Ryan, and Lindsey was going to be there, and it was going to be sprung on Alyssa that Lindsey and Ryan have some sort of relationship.  Or maybe not have it sprung on her, but everybody there knows it but her and she doesn't find out until later.  Or only Ryan and Lindsey know.

Whatever...she's going to be the dupe, and if I were her, I'd be pissed, too.  There was zero reason in the world for Ryan to agree to go to the getaway without divulging that he's formed a relationship with any other cast members, especially Lindsey.

And I'd love to know the extent of Lindsey's and Ryan's relationship.  Someone was telling Alyssa details, and it happened between when she invited him and when she uninvited him.  Who?  The producers on the show?  I'm with @LennieBriscoe in thinking there's some shenanigans going on.

That said, I simply do not understand why Alyssa felt it appropriate to ignore Lindsey when she showed up.  I'm hoping they just didn't show Alyssa saying, "Hi, Lindsey," and going back to her cooking.  But I think Steve was also giving her the silent treatment.

And...was Ryan bowling in his boots?  They let people do that?  They used to require bowling shoes, in part, I thought, because they were always worn only inside the alley and wouldn't scratch the floor.  I had my own bowling shoes at one point (probably the worst bowler in history to have her own shoes), and never put them on until I was inside.

I'm way outside the loop when it comes to the shaming industry, but are people not even allowed to slut-shame in their own homes?

But the whole laundry scene looked 100% staged to me--a mostly empty laundry basket and one person handing another person one dirty item at a time, so...whatever.  Although I'm intrigued that she says the machines in Serbia have the temperature setting in actual degrees.  That's some precision laundering there.

And how did she get up in that tree?  It was little moments like that that made the movie even better.

Did y'all notice the scene near the end where there was a drunk student falling down in the grass near where our guys were walking, and one of them cautioned, "Not our problem" or something like that?  I was glad I had a caption device because I'm not sure I would have noticed they said something about it.

  19. Yay!  Somebody actually saw one of the obscure movies I start threads on.  And liked it!  And wrote an intelligent post about it (which is more than I can do).

I originally saw a preview in a theater and I thought it looked good, but I'm sensitive to suspense and peril so I didn't make a mental note to go, but then I saw some reviews and thought I could handle it.  I'm so glad I did.

One thing I noticed was that all the plaques commemorated the first black student to do whatever, but theirs said the first men(?) to do it, and I was thinking it was because Carlos isn't black, so they had to finesse their way around it.

And something else I noticed in the youtube comments about the trailer (yes, I braved youtube comments) was people's glee at whatever video game it was that Carlos was playing.  I never would have noticed that and still don't know what the video game is but I appreciate little touches like that.

Seek out RJ Cyler.  He's a keeper.

I think Alyssa and Brett Ryan are likely also on the same political side, so I guess, for her, their core values match.

I think Alyssa was repelled by Chris's looks from the beginning, and for reasons I can completely understand didn't just say, "I'm repelled by his looks."  And also for reasons I can completely understand, didn't know how to backtrack and later say, "I was repelled by his looks."  Kind of like how George Costanza digs a hole and can't get out.

Then it turns out they're on opposite sides politically.  I've had relationships in the past where we didn't align perfectly on political matters but that was in the olden days when there were nuances.  I couldn't do it today.

Add into this the fact that this is an arranged marriage, and not for the reasons some cultures have arranged marriages.  It's an arranged marriage for an audience's entertainment, which means there's zero reason for someone to fight for it.  That's what drives me crazy about the experts, especially Cal.

I think he truly believes that these bogus marriages have the same underpinnings as a marriage based on a relationship, or even an arranged marriage due to culture.  In both of those cases, people are invested in either the person they're marrying or the culture they're part of, and it affects how they act.  But with MAFS, there's nothing for them to be invested in other than an experiment for the experiment's sake, or worse, an experiment that exists only for a TV show.  So it really grates when he exhorts them to work on their marriage as if it had any of the roots that non-MAFS marriages have.

These "marriages" are nothing more than a blind date on steroids, and Alyssa treated it as exactly that.  I believe she was trying to avoid hurting Chris's feelings and didn't have the option of having a friend call with an emergency as an excuse to leave.  I really do think she felt trapped and maybe it would have been better for her to admit she didn't like his looks from the start, but that definitely would have hurt Chris's feelings.  It might have been better in the long run, but there are plenty of us George Costanzas out there who have a knack for mishandling situations like this.

And don't forget that even Chris's friends were warning her at the reception that he has a habit of being condescending.  So she's now married to a guy she's not attracted to, whose friends acknowledge is condescending.  Yikes.

And then when it turned out Alyssa and Chris weren't going to align politically, she reasonably didn't see any reason to work to overcome that, unlike if something like that came up with someone she'd been seeing (and liking) for a little bit.  And I can see her not wanting to air the political angle in public.  Maybe she's kicking it old school where she wants to be able to be friends with people (like the other couples) even if they have differences.  I miss those days.

So you have a situation where she's not attracted to the person she's matched with, doesn't want to tell him she's not attracted to him and everything goes sideways because of it, and then she finds out there's a core incompatibility that would be problematic even in a "real" relationship where there's an attraction or a cultural imperative.  And all of it plays out with cameras in her face, and producers all around.

And now that I think about it, every time she said, "I'm a good person," I wonder if she's thinking, "This all happened because I didn't want to hurt someone's feelings."  That would track.  It wouldn't acknowledge everything else that happened, but it's not like she's just pulling it out of nowhere.
