  1. Strangely enough, the mail on the threshold never came up till Episode 2 was broadcast on BBC America. Ellie may not have been able to face looking at it, but you'd think Hardy would get it out of the way just to keep from tripping over it himself. The other query I saw about this was wondering if there could be hate mail for Ellie within the envelopes, in which case, Hardy should have called in SOCO to come and examine it as a favour to Ellie and take prints. I'm sure the important mail got redirected to Ellie's flat in Devon so it's not bills. Re: Beth's anger at Ellie Ellie seems to be the emotional centre for most Broadchurch 2 fans. It's hard for us to see her blamed/hurt/attacked. Naturally we dislike anyone who does. It would be easier for the viewers to sympathize if Beth was taking out some/all of her anger on Hardy because he was in charge and Cate Gillespie had warned Beth that Hardy was trouble. This may be one of the origins of Beth's anger. In series 1, episode 1, she asked Ellie to promise she'd get the killer. They were talking on the beach. Beth: Promise me, Ellie, because I don't know your boss from Adam and me and you go back. The boys go back. I'm counting on you to get them caught. Ellie: I swear. 2. It's hard to know for certain because they showed Hardy arrive in the shed and Joe said "I'm sick of hiding". Then there was a commercial break. When the show came back, the words "59 days earlier*" flashed on the screen and then a sequence of what happened was shown without voiceover to indicate whether Joe was confessing this or not. Most people assume he was but we don't know whether he and Hardy were now at the station or still in the shed. After the next commercial break we saw Hardy ask Joe some specific questions in the interrogation room. Joe was dressed in a white jumpsuit and shoes -- not his own clothes, which must have been confiscated. But again, we can't be sure if an officer was with him while he changed or not. After a few questions, Hardy left the room to go and tell Ellie.
  3. I just put a link to the convention videos in the media thread. Getting back to series 2, episode 2: In series 1, episode 2, Ellie reads a few of Danny's social media posts to Hardy. Twelfth of May: Dear Dad, remember me? I’m the one you used to play with. Twelfth of May: I know what he’s doing. Because these are one right after the other, it sounds like the second line was also referring to Mark.
  4. David Tennant's at a fan convention this weekend -- a rare thing for him to do. There are some photos and short video clips from his Q&A session on the convention's instagram account. https://instagram.com/wizardworld/ The questions were all about Dr Who, Marvel Comics or Harry Potter. ... And it's just been announced he's going to be at the Wizard World in Philadelphia on May 10 with Billie Piper, his first costar from Doctor Who. I wonder if Marvel Comics is getting him to make fan appearances in advance of the AKA Jessica Jones series.
  5. Here's a fun, spoiler-free, interview from January -- just after episode 3 aired in the UK. It's Graham Norton interviewing Andrew Buchan who plays Mark Latimer. http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p02hkxmf Length: About 16 minutes
  6. I wondered why they didn't mention Hardy's heart condition as well, especially since he was medicaled out of active duty so that the police force obviously knew before the arrest. Then someone pointed out that the Defense could have then argued that Hardy was not well enough to have led the case in the first place and that if he omitted such crucial information when getting hired, how could they trust that his police notes could be trusted as truthful and complete. They might have been able to get the whole case thrown out on that.
  7. David Tennant's default state of being these days is stubble, including the neck. He's doing a rare appearance at a U.S. fan event in North Carolina this weekend. If we knew someone who was going, they could plead with him to get rid of it.
  8. Let's let the man talk about the beard himself. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qqmK9wX-w8E He did this appearance on the morning before episode 2 was broadcast in the UK. It's spoiler free. :) There are more videos from this radio show in the media thread.
  9. That was Gracepoint's Paul. Broadchurch's Paul and Beth have no history like that. Beth saying "I'm at Mum's grave." is a pointer to her mum, Liz, seeking consolation from Paul after Danny's death and being one of the few faithful congregants at his Church. Beth didn't go to Church (much) before Danny was killed.
  10. A pair of fellow Broadchurch fans did a wonderful series of podcasts, one following each episode. They helped enhance my experience of series 2. Here's the link to the episode 2 podcast on Youtube. I hope you give it a go and enjoy. http://youtu.be/tvbkJhRGlao
  11. You don't have to buy the ebooks to follow the series. They just add a little flavour to the second series.
  12. Most opinions I've read say the Latimers wouldn't be able to pick the Crown's barrister. At best, they could have a lawyer of their own present who represents their interests. The writer claims he had legal advisors go over the script.
  13. I really don't think they could avoid addressing Thalidimide which wasn't pulled from the market till the end of 1961. I expect we'll see at least one birth of a thalidimide baby the next series. I was happy to have Chummy back. I hope she's in more episodes next year, even if it's a matter of sprinkling a scene here or there in because Miranda's busy elsewhere. But I've got to say, I also like the new additions, especially Nurse Crane. I'm so pleased they introduced Barbara and her well, especially in the few episodes where Pam Ferris, Bryony Hannah and Miranda Hart were elsewhere. Many shows force new characters into the spotlight too fast forgetting they have long-established ones. But CTM seems to have a knack for doing it right because I've liked every addition so far. I also enjoyed the Turners this year what with Sheila realizing she missed midwifery and taking up some nursing duties again. The episode that spotlighted her delivering a baby with Sister Monica Joan was wonderful.
  14. From the discussion for episode 1: In episode 2, we see Beth visiting her mother's grave And since it will come up, characters missing from series 2 without explanation in the show: Chloe's boyfriend Dean and the out-of-town reporter who was on Hardy's trail, Karen White. From the e-books we learn Dean has gone to New Zealand to work on a sheep farm and Karen's taken a correspondant's job in Dubai. P.S. The psychic's also gone but we do see him in a flashback.
  15. Yes. Tom's with Ellie's sister Lucy and his cousin Ollie, the reporter who still lives with his mom. Lucy has a gambling problem, though like you, I thought it was drink/drugs. Ellie gave her a cheque for £1000 and then Lucy gave her the info about seeing someone dropping a bag into the dumpster near her place on the night Danny died.
  16. Please do stick with it. If you skip scenes or whole episodes you have the potential to miss the different layers of the stories of series 2. Recaps never do a scene justice because they're from the recapper's POV and they miss things.
  17. The e-books that were published following each episode give a little detail people are wondering about, not seen in series 2. Since they were written under the supervision of Chris Chibnall they're fairly close to canon. I'll put the little bit of detail we learn from each book into the corresponding episode thread. From the e-book for episode 2: Maggie's struggling to keep the Broadchurch Echo afloat, hence the move to a smaller office. Karen White, the out-of-town reporter from series 1 has taken a job in Dubai. We don't see her in series 2.

Since they were written under the supervision of Chris Chibnall they're fairly close to canon. I'll put the little bit of detail we learn from each book into the corresponding episode thread. From the e-book for episode 3, about Jocelyn: In a nice call-back to series 1, Jocelyn was Jack Marshall's lawyer when he was on trial for having sex with his underage wife-to-be. From then on she was one of Jack's few friends. Also Jocelyn runs into the Latimers 3 days after Danny's birth. Beth mentions her friend Ellie is overdue with her own baby. So Tom and Danny were days apart in age.

Since they were written under the supervision of Chris Chibnall they're fairly close to canon. I'll put the little bit of detail we learn from each book into the corresponding episode thread. From the e-book for episode 4, written in Tess' voice the day Alec finds Pippa's body: Something called Weil's disease may have contributed to Hardy's heart problems. It's caused by a bacterial infection and can attack one or more organs in the body. The sort of bacteria that might come from water that had rotting human or animal tissue in it. Hardy nearly drowned retrieving Pippa's body. He likely swallowed water. And in the book, in typical Hardy fashion, he checked himself out of emergency against the doctors' wishes to monitor him for infection, specifically Weil's Disease. It adds to the personal tragedy Alec suffered because of the Sandbrook case. Tess was going to end the marriage much earlier than the day of the pendant theft. She was trying to figure out how to tell Hardy when her ebook starts. The affair had been going for a while. But in the wake of Alec finding Pippa dead, Tess realized she had to postpone telling him.

Since they were written under the supervision of Chris Chibnall they're fairly close to canon. I'll put the little bit of detail we learn from each book into the corresponding episode thread. From the e-book for episode 6, about Beth: Beth's mum died of a stroke three or four months before Joe pleads not guilty. Chloe's boyfriend Dean, took a job on a sheep farm in New Zealand and didn't tell her until the night before he was leaving.

Since they were written under the supervision of Chris Chibnall they're fairly close to canon. I'll put the little bit of detail we learn from each book into the corresponding episode thread. From the e-book for episode 7: Before Claire moved to Sandbrook, she lived with her grandmother in Wales and near her parents. Her grandmother gave her the pendant as she was leaving for England.
  22. The e-books that were published following each episode give a little detail people are wondering about, not seen in series 2. Since they were written under the supervision of Chris Chibnall they're fairly close to canon. I'll put the little bit of detail we learn from each book into the corresponding episode thread. From the e-book for episode 1: Ellie was not demoted. She started off as a D.S. in Devon, but the first case she got there upset her and she realized she needed to step back to easier duty. That's how she's ended up on traffic duty.
  23. Olivia was the one Chris Chibnall wanted most but didn't think they'd actually get her. So apparently she was told during her first meeting with Chibnall. But then she was called an hour later and told they were going in a different direction and not to tell anyone else. And she didn't. David Tennant found out she knew half way through the filming and confronted her, but it sounds like she didn't tell him. The one thing she asked at an early meeting was if her character could "kick the killer in the balls" when he was revealed.
  24. Keep in mind that Matthew Gravelle didn't find out his character was the killer until the script for episode 8 was delivered. Had he been told to play Joe as stressed in that opening scene, he'd have known Joe was going to be revealed as the killer. The only actor who knew at that point was Olivia Colman and she wasn't letting anyone in on the secret, even David Tennant.
