Faux Life: Things That Happen On TV But Not In Reality
Laura Holt replied to Kromm's topic in Everything Else TV
I notice this on sitcoms all the time - when they want to show a woman has given up they always show her at home in sweat pants or a bathrobe as if this just shows us how low she has gone. Because no normal woman goes around her own home in comfy clothes unless life has done her wrong.- 8.4k replies

I thought they came close to doing this in that episode where they retconned the first time Chandler and Monica got together in England. Making it that Monica had gone looking for Joey was just so wrong to me and didn't make one tiny bit of sense.

Absolutely agreed. I'd take that triangle to be a dress either way at least at first glance anyway. If they are going to have separate washrooms why do the designers have to try so hard to be clever?

Random cute kid moment. Out with the family yesterday and my 8 yr old granddaughter almost went into the men's room by mistake. She made me "pinkie swear" that I wouldn't tell anyone. So shhh, don't pass this on 😀.

I read this a few months ago. Fascinating read and very well written. Right now I am trying to read light fiction as a break from the crappy world situation, and decided to go with Christmas themed books in the run up to the holidays. Mostly this has worked out well but I just finished the newest Debbie Macomber and, wow, not good. I mean I wasn't expecting Great Literature, but seriously this is an e-book that got deleted. I know I'll never read it again.

Once (and where were the photographers and reporters??) I got wordle with the first word I played. I was way too proud of it 😀. Does anyone else play connections? It's one of the other games you can choose from after you conquer wordle. I really enjoy that one, even though some days I end up thinking "what the ever loving hell" after I don't finish it.

Pet Peeves: Aka Things That Make You Go "Gah!"
Laura Holt replied to Betweenyouandme's topic in Everything Else
Today's peeve - daylight savings time. Personally I don't really care all that much whether we have it or not but oh boy does my husband care. So twice a year I get to hear all about how stupid it is that we do this and how we really need to stop doing this until I want to snap "sure ok I'll get right on that!". On the plus side with fall back we get an extra hour's sleep so that's a good thing. -

I have that channel blocked. And if the news continues to be as dire as it has been this past couple of weeks I may be blocking all the "all news" channels! -
Definitely leaning towards this option. We've cast around a few alternatives and nothing is all that appealing. Probably will get some stuff done around the house and make a few day trips. The family get together has been pushed forward to the spring, which all things considered is probably for the best. I do admit driving any distance in November had me a little concerned. We can have gorgeous weather or a blizzard... Covid is the reason our family get together can cancelled. Luckily for us my sister realized the runny nose she was experiencing wasn't allergies after all before we set off!
-
We were supposed to be visiting extended family this coming week but everything got cancelled at the last minute. On the plus side we're not doing a day and a half's worth of driving just to get there, which, yay, but on the down side we were looking forward to a mini break even if it wasn't a tropical lazing on the beach one. Now we need to figure out if we want to substitute a shorter trip closer to home or just save our pennies towards Christmas.

I've been reading a lot of articles about how much more expensive Halloween candy was this year @PRgal. I guess that must be true but personally I don't think we paid any more for what we bought this year than we paid last year. But maybe that's because we're "low-tier"? If by that you mean bags of chips and treat size chocolate bars 😀.
-
In our old neighbourhood we usually got anywhere from 120-150 kids and we would make up little treat bags with licorice, gum, a chocolate bar etc. - stuff we would have wanted when we were kids but mostly don't eat now. Anyway we moved to a much quieter area but didn't realize it at the time - and ended up with almost a 100 bags that we didn't give out! Lesson learned! I think my husband would be beside himself if that ever happened! I can see us someday in a retirement home and he'll insist "you never know" and sit by the door with a bowl of candy ever hopeful!

Every year we get at least one child who walks right into the house. The poor parent is standing on the porch going "no no we don't go in people's houses!" But really much as I love Halloween it must be so confusing for little ones. All year we tell them not to go up to strange houses and to never to take candy from strangers and then one day a year all the rules get thrown out the window!

Just talking to my daughter and someone in their neighbourhood put a religious tract in the children's Halloween bags instead of a treat. Well I guess it beats razor blades or a tooth brush 🙄. But c'mon people. Do you really think little Mary or Billy is going to read your little sermon and hasten down to their nearest church? Lighten up! -
We had exactly 31 kids as of 8.10. We will probably leave the lights on until around 8.30 but I doubt we'll get any more kids. And I agree @Browncoat and @ABay buy the good stuff! We always buy too much just in case as I hate the thought of turning kids away, but really next year I think we need to accept that we should plan for 50 at most.
-
Yep. My kids had more than one Halloween wearing a snowsuit under their costumes. The worst weather related ones aren't because of the cold it's sleet or rain. My kids were troupers though, nothing was going to stop them from hitting every house in the neighbourhood!
-
Happy Halloween! First one for us with my husband newly retired and I think he's more excited than the toddlers who live down the street! I feel bad for the kiddies though as we had absolutely gorgeous weather last week (almost had to put on the AC at one point) but we had some snow yesterday and today the temp by this evening is supposed to be -2c with a chance of flurries. Oh well if Canadians let a little snow or cold stop us we'd never do anything!

Agreed. I have some extended family members who overshare on FB - I mean they treat it as if it is their personal journal. But that's not my problem as long as I have the ability to use the ignore function. And I do. Do you mean this person is making these comments directly to your bereaved friend? Wow. That's just awful. -
Bouncing off this to ask what people mean when they use the word stupid. I still remember my little niece running into the room one day to tell us her brother "used the S word". By which she meant he had called her stupid. In her family that was considered a bad word and not one the kids were allowed to use.
-
Do you mean students shaming other students? I misunderstood in that case. And yes, that was certainly alive and well when I was going through school too. But annoying though this is it's also understandable. Kids have not yet learned the difference between holding an opinion and stating a fact. The sad thing I see is this kind of thing is no longer (if it ever really was) limited to kids.
-
I don't see this in the education system, I see this with people who have decided that Dr. Google or that guy with a blog is better informed than someone who has achieved a degree and professional experience in whatever field is under discussion.

Faux Life: Things That Happen On TV But Not In Reality

Another faux school related thing on TV, usually sitcoms, is how the kids who goofed off for 4 years suddenly buckle down at the last minute and ace their SATS and get into university. I know kids who realized in their senior year that they should have taken their education more seriously but they certainly weren't able to undo 4 years of neglect with an 11th hour successful Hail Mary pass!- 8.4k replies

Milestone Moments: All The Celebrity Vitals

We experienced this when my sister died. Some in the extended family were all over their social media posting constant "pay attention to my loss and pity me" posts. My other siblings and I had agreed not to post anything other than links to the obit and funeral information - and we only did that at our parents request. If the Friends friends choose to say something that's up to them but this idea that not posting means you aren't grieving has got to stop.- 4.3k replies
