Caught up with all the news ones. On the plus side no Jarod and especially no Dave. On the down side, I dunno, the episodes weren't bad but nothing special either. I did like that there seemed to be a certain camaraderie between the buyers as opposed to the nastiness and snarking from back in the day. On the other hand it really was a case of "the pitcher going to the well once too often".

And likely that is going to be it for her. She seemed to have every intention of outdoing Michelle and now she's going to have to settle for 7 kids. I wonder which bothers her more? Her innocent victim husband being in prison or that her babymaking days are probably over?

The Dick Van Dyke Show - General Discussion
Bethany replied to Rinaldo's topic in The Dick Van Dyke Show
With regard to Sally only being 27 it seems unlikely to me given that in the flashbacks when Rob is first hired to work for Alan Brady Sally and Buddy are already seasoned staff writers. This would have to have been at least 5 years before the show officially starts as Richie was born (again in a flashback episode) and Rob is already working on the Brady Show. Unless Sally was a teenager when Alan hired her there is no way she is 27 at any point in the run of the show! That said keep track of how old the characters are meant to be isn't exactly a strong suit of the show. -
This a big controversy here right now as some schools want to ban cell phones in class and parents are up in arms at the idea. They seem to feel, as Sunny does, that if they aren't able to communicate 24/7 this can only lead to Something Terrible.

To be fair he has also provided most (all?) his adult sons with jobs of some kind or another. The daughters are the ones who really got taken advantage IMO, and those who married have some support if they did speak up, so if there was any kind of lump sum compensation it was likely to them.

I've just finished (well almost anyway) going through all my parents stuff. Some things are family mementos so got kept but a lot of stuff was just the collectibles that my mother gathered and no one now wants. Souvenir spoons, bells, match books, post cards etc. Realizing that no one wants this now certainly is making me rethink a lot of the stuff I've been accumulating that will have no value to anyone else. I've got room for these kinds of things now but if we downsize I guess they will have to be among the first to go.

Yes, I think what Jill and Derrick have done is probably considered an attack by JB. But most of the others likely believe that Jill is being influenced by her husband so they're willing to cut her some slack. After all in their world view women have no agency over their own words or actions.

Faux Life: Things That Happen On TV But Not In Reality
Bethany replied to Kromm's topic in Everything Else TV
One of the biggest faux things of all - people having to come in person to tell you something they could easily phone or text. Of course that would mean less screen time for various characters and no opportunity for snappy repartee. -
I agree. I totally feel the Duggars took this aspect of how they raised their children to a ridiculous level but older children helping care for younger children isn't intrinsically wrong. As an oldest child I had a lot of responsibility at a younger age and IMO that has served me well in life. That is absolutely in no way meant to suggest that what the Duggars did was right! But within reason it's the way things are in most middle sized to large families and if Jill doesn't feel that this was harmful to her that is her right.

Faux Life: Things That Happen On TV But Not In Reality

When my uncle was in hospice my father visited him and my uncle said "It takes a long time to die". Heartbreaking but also truer than you'd expect if your only experience of watching someone die (of natural causes of course) is based on TV. -
I thought I had set this up to record but I hadn't. Happy to hear Barry is in them. He makes it worth watching! Any other of the regulars back? Geeze, thought he was at least in his mid 60s back when he was appearing on the show with Rene.

I went through this with my mother last summer. Not home hospice as she had already been living in an assisted living retirement community due to multiple issues. She had been failing for several months (in retrospect it's so clear now). Losing interest in food was one sign, having to be encouraged to even drink some water was another. When she was nearing the end, and all her systems were, essentially, shutting down, they started palliative care. The goal was to keep her comfortable and let nature take its course. When this process began my two nieces, my daughter and I always made sure someone was with her, holding her hand, talking to her while she could still talk to us (I am starting to cry now) and stayed with her right to the end. If they offer this to you I would take it. I was so afraid she would be afraid and thankfully this didn't happen. I don't know if I could have handled that. I am so sorry you're going through this and you are so right. If your mom is still with you make sure you tell her you love her.

Ottawa girl to become youngest university graduate in Canadian history Take that Sheldon Cooper - she's only 12! Of course he'd be the first to point out that it's not a degree in Physics so likely doesn't count 😃.

I barely am aware of twitter. What is FARK? And is reddit really going belly up? I've never been there but it comes up as an option when I am doing searches all the time.

Pet Peeves: Aka Things That Make You Go "Gah!"
Bethany replied to Betweenyouandme's topic in Everything Else
I am half Irish but obviously it's too far back because there is no way I would have gotten that pronunciation right. So is it the "h" that makes it "va"? As in Siobhán? Or have I got that wrong? -
I wondered if you enjoyed them? I waited 20 years to read one of her lesser known titles and realize it wasn't worth my investment of $4.00 or my time. Spring Green - didn't even finish it.

I think it was only the first season that it seemed to happen in almost every episode. The good thing was most of the time it was the opening of the show and since they always have to cut something it means they cut the random sports person and leave (mostly!) the rest of the show intact!

I remember watching the original show when it first came on and thinking they were just this quaint, old fashioned family who were living their values and not hurting anyone. Like a lot of these reality show families who were being presented as a little off beat but essentially harmless. How wrong those of us who thought that were!

Faux Life: Things That Happen On TV But Not In Reality

"I was told there would be lasagna." Best line from an episode that otherwise is a classic faux things that happen on tv but not in real life! At least I hope so 😮. -

I love that! Totally stealing this if for any reason anyone suggest a vow renewal to us! -
Speaking of...like it isn't bad enough to be affected by fires further away so some fool last night, set a fire in a wooded area near us. Because of course, why not? Luckily a hiker spotted it before it spread too far and the firefighters were able to handle it. Bad news for the arsonist. Hopefully they won't try again.

Dolly Parton is probably one of my favourite people and I came across a cute story about her today that made me smile: Dolly Parton entered a Dolly Parton look-alike contest. And lost.- 337 replies

I just cannot imagine that! It's only been a few days and we're already completely fed up. The idea of months of this is just too awful to contemplate.

Faux Life: Things That Happen On TV But Not In Reality
Bethany replied to Kromm's topic in Everything Else TV
I always wonder about this as well. I mean, sure it's a sweet thing to do, and of course some must, but like you I've never been invited to one and knowing my group of friends and family it's not likely to happen. I'd be tempted to do it if people bring gifts. I could use some new towels...
