  1. Agreed about Amber. She's killing it with the "What?" pieces. Also worth commending was Meyers comments on Manchester. One of the more eloquent statements put forward in the last 72 hours. [Note to Mod; I want to make clear the following comments are not intended to be political in nature per se , but an observation about a guest described by Meyers as a "friend of the show". Do with it what you feel is right] John McCain's appearance struck me as kind of sad. Here's a guy that knows how to do a talk show. He's got the entrance down pat right up to pointing to the band before he sits down. There's no reason he shouldn't have breezed through this appearance but it seems time has taken it's toll. Rather than doing the country a solid in a long life of solids by offering his insight on current events, we got a trip in the wayback machine to the 70's when life was presumably simpler and everyone knew their place (so to speak). It seemed Seth realized that at the same moment it hit me and from what I could tell, the studio audience. I suspect last night will be the last time we see him on the show which is kind of a shame in many ways.
  2. Cutaway shots to cover an edit. You'll see some of those with Batiste as well.
  3. If there's one thing to be said about Fallon is he's a good company man and can be trusted not to go off the reservation on a live broadcast from sea-to-shining-sea. You have to keep in mind, this thing aired at 8:30 West Coast time so as far as the network was concerned it was imperative that nothing approaching 'questionable' or 'blue' material grace the screens of Left Coast viewers at that hour. Fallon was just the guy to serve up a lukewarm Twinkie...
  4. I can only imagine the depravity of photographs Fallon must possess of Lorne Michaels that allow him to hold a job with NBC... The human equivalent of Gerber's Carrot Puree.
  5. Yeah, it wasn't that long ago folks were actively rooting for Juliette to go gentle into that good night (or maybe just move to Walla Walla, Washington)
  6. Good job wrapping up the package. Parenthetically, going to miss those guys running around town in Portland...
  7. Of mild interest: Jimmy Fallon's Longtime 'Tonight Show' Head Writer A.D. Miles Exits I really don't think there are any tea leafs to be read into this other than maybe the cat just wanted to move along. OTOH, Head Writer gigs for a network television show aren't dispensed out of a vending machine for anyone with change in their pockets and a 'Knock-knock' joke jotted down in their Moleskine journal...
  8. I sure miss me some Craiggy Fergie. Nice appearance, miss his voice.
  9. If you're a student of the talk show genre it's worth having a look at the Sofia Black-D'Elia interview they ran tonight (from a 3/14/17 broadcast). Johnny Carson himself would have submitted it for his Emmy reel. What could have, in less skilled hands, been little more than "ingenue hawks latest project" squander of videotape, Kimmel made some genuinely and entertaining television and Black-D'Elia won over an audience that was palatable cold with the idea of wasting a perfectly fine afternoon touring the streets of Hollywood to listen to this week's "it" girl. Rather than rote recital Jimmy listened to a clearly nervous Black-D'Elia, followed the road less traveled and turned it into simply a girl talking about her Dad. Very human. Very charming. Before it was over it appeared everyone in the room was having a grand time. The moonshot was successful. I imagine anyone that may have sat in that metaphorical chair, from now to back when orthocon tubes made the pictures fly through the air, would say "Yeah, that's how it's done". (Watching Thomas Keller cook was pretty sweet too)
  10. The CBS Microwave Cam !!! Not quite the Monkey Cam but a step in the right direction.
  11. Also worth remembering, except on the West Coast, the Thurs/Fri shows for the next couple of weeks will air at Zero Dark Hundred due to CBS coverage of the NCAA Men's Basketball tournament.
  12. This might be what you're referring to: People At NBC Reportedly Worried Jimmy Fallon ‘Too Weak On Trump’ A couple things: Remember, Fallon got the gig by circuitous circumstances. Had Leno followed the unwritten protocol with his retirement and had Conan not flamed-out under those events, Jimmy would probably be doing lightweight Rom-Com movies not unlike Fever Pitch until his dying days and we wouldn't be having this discussion. I've not witnessed that Fallon has any interest or capacity whatsoever in doing any more than being America's tail-wagging puppy. That's fine, it worked for Leno. Pick up a sizable paycheck each week, don't piss anyone off and nobody gets hurt. Again, that's fine. I think what suits at NBC might want from Fallon is very different from what they are able to get from Fallon. At the end of the day the only thing that counts is how many eyeballs are tuned in. It doesn't get anymore egalitarian than that...
  13. Strong monologue tonight but WTF was up with all the editing? All I can think is tech issues, odd audience response or perhaps they were still writing the material as they were going to air. [EDIT: He seemed to indicate it was the latter. "Fresh to me too"]
  14. Very impressed with Jon's smooth burn when he said he had a cowbell waiting for presidential aide Stephen Miller. Ice. [EDIT: I had to come back to say, that was the most Letterman-like show I've seen Colbert do to date. Crisp desk writing, actually following though with the "Teenage War" bit (albeit a little too long but the payoff was good), the Miller burn, Baranski was fun and the Zimmer performance was breathtaking. A little like the old days, nice job.]
  15. Enjoyed Tracy Morgan's response to Kimmel's question asking he had enough money to buy Morgan's beloved NY Knicks basketball team. Morgan got a sly grin on his face and said "It wasn't a Bob's Furniture Company truck that hit me..." adding "Everything in the store costs a penny more because of me" Glad to see he's back in the groove.
  16. We were reminded that on the recent PBS short series "Soundbreaking"
  17. Nice tribute and a sad reminder of what a critic said would be the next trend in music. Death. :(
  18. Remember kids... don't steal music! - Your pal Neil
  19. At least we avoided the time-honored Grammy drinking game of taking a pull every time LL licked his lips...
  20. Glad Al Jarreau got a shout out. Do yourself a favor and get your mitts on a copy of his live album "Look To The Rainbow". You can thank me later...
  21. Too bad the sound team let all the pickup noise pass through
  22. Like the old Ronald Reagan joke, we had to dig through a pile of manure but we finally found the pony!
  23. Love the mirror thing... reminds me of James Brown's cape bit
