That was me when I read Bridges of Madison County. I was wiped out for days afterward.

I didn't like Bridges of Madison County at all!  I still have no idea why it appealed to anyone.  Now, The Art of Racing in the Rain, I sat on my couch and just sobbed.  I still feel that sense of loss and sadness when I think about the book. It's why I won't see the movie.

Note: Clue/answer numbering has been off by one, starting with week 17. I fixed Week 19 here, but was not able to edit Weeks 17 and 18. Week 20 will be questions 91-95, for anyone keeping their own totals.

    Shouldn't week 20 be Questions 96 - 100?  Odd weeks end in 5 (week 1, Q 1 - 5), even weeks end in 0 (week 2, Q 6 - 10).

My score for Week 20: 2/5

    YTD:  50/100  6*

I didn't dislike Dennis; however I really like John - his voice, smile, and sense of ha ha... refreshing. He also supports an issue I feel strongly about, so he gets extra points for that. I hope he has a good, long run.

I didn’t catch John’s issue, but Dennis talked about the opioid crisis. What was John’s?

Some writer on this show really loves Sue Grafton.

Some viewers really love 💗 her, too!

  4. When Beth mentioned her missing earrings, I thought maybe one of their girls had "borrowed" them, and they should check to see if they know anything.  But when Randall's cufflinks were also missing, out of a box, that's when I began to believe that the burglar had actually been upstairs.

I first thought that Randall hadn't closed the front door, or maybe had forgotten to lock it, and that's how the guy got in.  But then they talked about getting a window (?) fixed.  Think how guilty Randall would feel if he had neglected to close/lock the front door!

  5. Description from imdb.com:

    Quote

Mike and Rio must decide what seed to start growing on their farm; Rio tries to get Beau and Kay's relationship to set sail; Jacob shadows Constance for a school project, making Rudy a nervous wreck while they discuss catching criminals.

Rudy's legal problems, and failure to disclose to Constance, just kept getting him in trouble deeper and deeper. However, I thought he was from the area, so wouldn't Constance already be aware?

To cruise or not to cruise?  The back and forth from Kay...why did she insist on a cruise, and then back out once Beau said he would go?  I didn't understand that part.

Mike and Rio have a long way to go to becoming farmers.  My dad was a farmer.  He wouldn't have lasted in farming two seasons if he was doing things the Mike way.  I suppose, sit-com humor, but I didn't think it was very funny.

  6. I didn't know Alda was in the Second City troupe, so I was trying to think who else on M*A*S*H was in Second City.  On the other hand, Catherine O'Hara was an instaget for me.

I loved the Hidden Gems category, though.

The show would have to be twice as long to give me enough time to suss them out!

Like others, I knew Secretary of State, but thought of Treasury and couldn't get past that to figure out Attorney General.  And Edmund Randall was a member of the famous Randall family from Williamsburg!

  7. I've watched the first two episodes of this season.  First up was Walk-On's Bistreaux & Bar, which I've never heard of.  Impressed with the shrimp boat experience, but overall didn't seem like I'd enjoy the restaurant.

Next one was Anytime Fitness.  Going to a gym, any gym, doesn't appeal to me.  However, the segment with the older folks class looked pretty good.  The guy in the middle segment was not someone I'd want to work with, and I think she did right by him.

On another note, do you think any of the staff is fooled for a minute with the horrible "transformations?"  Some aren't too bad, but most I've seen over the years are dreadful.  I might not know who it is really, but I'd be side-eying, wondering who the heck that is.

The TV guy finally finished and left just after 2.  And after tracking mud into my house on the carpet in the living room!  If they ask for a survey (and the often do), I'm definitely going to comment on now having to clean my carpet.  Just a few spots here and there, but still.  Not what I wanted to do today.

But I have TV back, and the local channels work!  I can watch Jeopardy! again!  Hooray!

    Still, 6 hours work!

We used to have DirectTV, had to switch to cable due to a line of sight satellite issue.  But that’s a whole other story.

  9. Regarding "troth," it was used in traditional wedding vows.  When I was planning my wedding in 1989, I was researching vows.  I'd heard Pledge thee my troth before, but didn't really know what is meant.  It boils down to promising to be faithful.

We used Church of Canada vows.  We were married in the First Presbyterian Church in Old Cowtown, Wichita, by a Presbyterian minister.  DH was Episcopalian, and I was Presbyterian.  Our minister had to agree to use the Church of Canada vows.

"I take you to be my wife/husband; to laugh with you in joy; to grieve with you in sorrow; to grow with you in love; and to be faithful to you alone as long as we both shall live."

  10. I hadn’t heard the Oliver’s story line will be ongoing.  I was worried about the caller hanging up.

I like Katie’s home business, but I want her hair pulled back when’s she making lasagne.  Also with Anna-Kat; she should have washed her hands before grabbing a handful of cheese to put on the lasagne.

Oh Trip!  Trust exercise! Never change!

Amidst all the GOAT publicity, Slate has published an interview with Stephanie Hull, who finished with the worst score of all time, -$6,800.  It's interesting and rather touching.

Very interesting!  Thanks for  the link!

Cities for the 2020 tour were announced today:

    • Williamsburg, VA
    • Nashville, TN
    • Boston, MA
    • Estes Park, CO
    • Santa Fe, NM

You can enter the random ticket drawing from now until February 19, 2020 for a chance to get tickets.

I saw the tickets announcement on my PBS station during the holidays.  I just now went to the site and registered for Williamsburg.  I have no idea what I'll bring if I get tickets.

We went to Des Moines in 2000 and brought a china clock and a cookie jar, and my husband brought a silver plated inkwell and (if I remember correctly) another silver inkwell.  Nothing was worth much, but we had a great time.  We learned a little about the items.  At that time, each ticket holder could bring two items.  A guy in line with us brought some dolls that his grandmother owned.  We're in a couple of frames near the end of the broadcast.

  13. Overall, I liked the episode.  However, Miles confronting his father's friend sounded like an accusation and annoyed me.  You don't just blurt out, "I know you're behind the God Account" with basically no proof, just a hunch you have.

    Yay, Ken!!

I was never a fan of James, and this tourney didn't change my mind about that. His comment about Brad's score still showing didn't come across like playful banter, but rather mean-spirited.

    I thought that too.

I got Lawrence Welk.  My Mom was young when he was starting out.  Mom got to go hear/see him & his band in some of the Midwest (Kansas, Nebraska) dance halls.  She and Dad always watched his TV show.

Happy Ken won, sad it’s over.

I hope someone can help me remember which book I read about this in. Non-fiction. Was the Crystal Palace mentioned in 'Devil in the White City'?

No, it wasn't.  There were some plants mentioned, and one of them was a variety called Crystal Palace.

and a rich palette of geraniums, among them Black Prince, Christopher Columbus, Mrs. Turner, Crystal Palace, Happy Thought, and Jeanne d’Arc.

Larson, Erik (2004-02-10). The Devil in the White City (p. 132). Knopf Doubleday Publishing Group. Kindle Edition.

I learned about the Crystal Palace on the "Victoria" series shown on PBS, in the episodes that covered the creation and opening of the Great Exhibition in 1851.

I am generally a fan of Patricia, but I actually think the show would be better without her, or at least dial her down to the status of the rest of the cast.  The cast around her is terrific and starting to find their characters, but the story always has to center around Carol and her rogue antics. Getting a bit tiresome for me.

Well, the title is Carol’s Second Act. Wouldn’t be much of a show without her.  I like the rest of the ensemble characters, and I think they all work well together.

Doesn’t Carol have another child? I seem to remember her mentioning two children, but I’m not sure.  I could use less time on the pharma rep daughter, but her “date” didn’t work well, so maybe we’ll see less of her.

Fun fact: he lived for a brief time in Minneapolis, Kansas, where I graduated high school several decades later.
