  1. Burgess was the other possibility I thought of, even though I did know Tolkien (not "Tolkein"). He did create his own slang in A Clockwork Orange, which was essentially Anglicized Russian words. (The Russian word for "good," khoroshiy, was "horrorshow.") Carroll wasn't a bad guess either; he made up words in "Jabberwocky", a few of which, like "galumph", later became "real" words. I'm definitely tired of all the Matt runaways; I got excited when Maureen built up a good score early on, but she fizzled out in DJ.
  2. Daniel emphasized over and over that he only did the translation out of duty to his parents, so I'm not particularly surprised that he didn't retain a lot of the contents. Apologies to the Matt lovers, but I enjoyed those few moments when it looked as though he would prevent another Matt runaway. Yes, articles are not required, but I did wonder whether that applied only to the beginnings of titles, like "Christmas Carol" instead of "A Christmas Carol." I guess "Billy Kid" had to be acceptable if you're going to apply the rule consistently. I don't mind Matt winning, but I hate when he (or any one person) gets all three DDs. It's much more interesting when all the contestants get a crack at one. Speaking of awkward small talk, I cringed and then let out my villain laugh when Mike talked about how much he wants to celebrate the contestants during his tenure as host. That's my main gripe against the Matt runaways. And yes, I noted the irony of Mike saying the game is all about the contestants. I completely blanked on FJ and then felt dumb when the answers were revealed.
  3. I'm a big fan of good sportsmanship, but maybe they just couldn't muster up the enthusiasm at seeing their chances of victory fly further out of reach. (Matt could have been wrong on the DD's, of course, but he usually isn't.)
  4. I was too young to watch it when it was new, but I've discovered a show from 1963-64 called Arrest and Trial. It was an early Law and Order, with the first half devoted to the police investigation and the second half to the trial. I've only seen a couple of episodes, but one guest starring Mickey Rooney as a heroin addict was ahead of its time in its plea for a re-examination of laws criminalizing addicts.
  5. "In just about everything" is right. The first time I saw him was in an obscure mid-60's series called Hey, Landlord. Even then, he played a cranky old man. And it was always great to see a Greek on screen.
  6. Let's not forget the theory that she is still living on the street and on drugs, watching these attractive young people in the coffee shop and imagining herself as one of them.😭
  7. For your reading pleasure. I read a story in Playbill once about an actress who forgot her mic was on when she exited to the rest room, and also got into an argument with another performer that showed she wasn't the sweet innocent she was portraying in the play. The story didn't say who it was though. I would think it was a credit to her acting if she could make people believe that her character never said Such Things (or went to the bathroom).
  8. Did she? I don't recall her ever being shown driving.
  9. For those still reluctant to go to the theaters, here's a funny fake ad. The series is called "It's a Southern Thing," but most of the time you don't have to be Southern to relate.
  10. I'm a city girl, but there was a time in the 70's when I listened to a lot of country music. I liked Tom T. Hall's "I Love," "Watermelon Wine," "I Like Beer," "Sneaky Snake," "I Care," "The Year Clayton Delaney Died," and "The Son of Clayton Delaney." The only one I didn't care for was "Faster Horses." And I enjoyed Jeane Robertson's story of her husband's trip to the grocery store, and her "Vanilla Milkshake" tale ranks up there with the famous "Wheat Toast" scene from Five Easy Pieces.
  11. True, and as badly as he treated Edith, I thought he was pretty loving towards Gloria. See his conversation with her in the last few minutes of this clip.
  12. I don’t know about the Boy Scout rules, but I think the Cleavers’ home was kept vague on purpose. I assumed it was somewhere in the Midwest, but in one episode June mentioned that the ocean was 20 miles away. That surprised me; I would have thought that they were at least a thousand miles from any ocean.
  13. Has he ever said what his field of study is? I hope it's the type of humanities field that has people saying, "What are you ever going to do with that?" There were rumors that Ken did just that, although there's no way to prove it. Everyone has a bad day sooner or later. Lots of Nicole dislike here! I agree she would be a bit much as a multi-day champ if she didn't tone it down, but it would have been cool to have an upset victory. I'm watching on YouTube a day behind and some asshole spoils the result.😠 I got Boeing and Helen Frankenthaler and made a correct guess on FJ. See you all in September! I wonder if Joe Buck had some inside info on the new host, because he said "From Mike Richards on down..." instead of "From Ken Jennings..."
  14. I'm wondering if people behind the scenes decided to put it at the top for a change to try avoiding yet another Matt runaway. There was really enthusiastic applause when Ruth bet big on the $400 DD. FJ was an instaget for me, and I was surprised two out of three missed it without even a guess. If the answer had turned out to be a LotR movie, I would have been annoyed. (I know J! goes out of its way to avoid anything "fix-y," and yet after Matt's interview story...)
  15. Mayim's first gig. How this is different from the current College Championship I couldn't tell you. "New versions" could also refer to more specialized games such as Sports Jeopardy!
  16. Maybe not. There were about 5 minutes there when it looked as though she might get within striking distance of Matt. But if cockadoodle is right, she can’t cry foul. I’m glad Matt had to BMS about the type of dinosaur. I questioned Joe’s saying Matt is breaking records. The only one he’s actually shattered so far is playing under the most hosts. We’ll see if he breaks any others. He well might. I guessed Liberia for FJ, mainly because it’s one of those places the writers seem to like.
  17. Thanks! I figured it was someone very early in the film.
  18. What was her role in “Psycho”? In “Strangers on a Train,” she had a small but very important role as someone with a very triggering resemblance to a murder victim.
  19. I agree with these objections. I don't recall Alex or anyone else ever showing such obvious favoritism towards a contestant, although Alex would point it out when someone dominated. Joe sounded shocked when someone other than Matt actually rang in and answered correctly. It's not enough to make me stop watching, though. Is Matt getting better or are the opponents getting worse? Or both? Those were two bad incorrect FJ guesses. There was no explorer named "Empire", and Brian seemed to confuse South America and the South Pole. And it was annoying to hear Joe pronounce "Amundsen" as "Edmondson." It took me awhile to catch onto what they were looking for in the "letter after M" category. Another reason I don't like the "start at the bottom" strategy. I knew $1, Cerberustler, and rib.
  20. Some did. I remember commenting on the old TwoP boards around the time his wins numbered twenty-something that I was starting to root for him to lose. (Little did I know...) Same complaint...that he not only won but that almost all his wins were runaways. And Ken didn’t do the “start at the bottom” thing, so that there was a bit more suspense for a longer time.
  21. I agree that Faber did well. I am guessing “painful” was a reference to Matt and his repeated runaway games. I know zilch about Joe Buck. The only Joe Buck I’m familiar with is the one in Midnight Cowboy.
  22. Congrats on everyone who correctly said German for FJ. I thought of Latin. Nothing against Matt but I am getting tired of runaway games.
  23. Another beautiful Greek gold medalist: Stefanos Notouskos.
  24. I had high hopes for Andrew when I heard the intro, but after learning about his TBI, I predicted that he would be steamrolled by Matt. I cheered when Andrew hit that DD, but then he missed it.🙁
