S11.E11: The Great Christmas Bake Off
LeDucDiableBleu replied to Athena's topic in The Great British Bake Off
I felt bad for Jamie when Prue and Paul were ripping on him constantly. He took the whole thing in stride and realized he wasn't at the same level as the others but I feel like when he saw the finished episode on tv, their comments might have stung. I've never seen Tom Allen before and I really liked him. He seems very "British" in that he sort of seems to embody the British sensibility. Whereas Matt and Noel are comic characters who could be anywhere. I liked his voice, it was really soothing. He came off (to me) as being too well-trained for GBBO. Like a Broadway performer playing at a HS production. Not that GBBO is lesser, just that it's different and bit more foody nerdy and niche. -
I'm super happy for Giuseppe and I was rooting for him for sure, but I was pretty underwhelmed with the finale. The carrot cakes nor Belgian buns looked appetizing to me. I thought Chigs' showstopper was the best visually. I loved his playing cards and mushrooms. Overall this showstopper reminded me of Rahul, Kim Joy and Ruby's finale showstopper, where they were tasked with something I thought would look spectacular but all ended up pretty plain. Also in my opinion, Noel and Matt add absolutely nothing to the show, and I've decided from here on out I'm going to fast forward all of their speaking parts. The 10 second skip forward on the app works great for that reason. I'm thrilled for Giuseppe and I will buy his cookbook. My favorite thing this year was his German Christmas biscuits.

Well I have to eat my hat because I was sure Jurgen wouldn't have been eliminated. I really enjoyed him as a contestant, and him being intellectual and not one of "the beautiful people." I also liked that he was into books and music and not so much science and engineering. It seems like lately we've been inundated with cooking+science themes on tv in general. But I realize this is a baking show so as much as I enjoyed his personality if Paul said his baking's not up to par then he had to go.

There's just no way that Jurgen or Giuseppe are going home before the final. From day 1 that's been their destiny. Everyone else has been playing for the third spot. I thought Lizzy was a much better baker than she was given credit for but I'm glad she made it as far as she did. My guess is that in the final, Jurgen and Giuseppe will be expected to be perfect. If they mess up in any way, the third person will win, imo. It reminds me of the season when Richard the carpenter had won SB four(?) times and was considered a lock, but he messed up one detail in the signature in the final and Paul didn't like that, and Nancy ended up winning. As mentioned before, this show rarely does real surprises, so we'll see.

One thing I dislike about the editing of the show is when they really go overboard trying to show a "gotcha" moment or an opposite thing happening. This week someone said (I think it was Lizzie) that you don't want to put too much gelatin in or else it'll end up gluey. Then there was a quick shot to Giuseppe's gluey caramel because he put too much gelatin in it. That's one example but it happens many times every episode and it's tired, imo.

Earlier Juergen made the sculpted cake with the book Utopia, and this week he made his cake with music that Henry the 8th wrote. I think he must be a Tudor fan. I am too. It's my favorite genre of historical fiction and I love any books, tv shows, movies about it. It makes me like Juergen even more. Same. He also gave a handshake to Liam's salted peanut butter caramel millionaire shortbreads.

Thank you for bringing back memories for me! I had one and loved it and bought a modern updated one for my daughter but she never got attached to it like I did mine. And yes that would be perfect for the milk bread challenge.

I agree. It seems like both of them are trying to build their own brand instead of being the best hosts they can be for the show. And I'm sure the producers tell them to bother the bakers during tense moments but it's still annoying. They stand so incredibly close to the bakers while they're working and it makes it uncomfortable to watch. I was watching the Japanese week ep from last year and Matt asked Noel what he would put in his steamed buns and Noel responded with "human blood." Sorry but I don't need Howard Stern-esque shock factor statements in GBBO (it may have been a different episode, I binged several seasons recently).

I do like how Lizzie says "Ta" as sort of a goodbye and thank you sign off. I think it's super charming and I wish I could incorporate that into my US vocabulary without sounding like I'm in a Dickens novel lol.

I remember watching Austin win that track running competition and being shocked that he was so fast and had such explosiveness for being such a huge guy. He has a big frame and can carry lots of muscle without being compact to restrict movement which makes (or made) him also athletic.

Downton Abbey - General Discussion
LeDucDiableBleu replied to Meredith Quill's topic in Downton Abbey
I watched a couple of episodes during the re-airing on PBS over last weekend. One thing I didn't notice earlier but did now was how pretty much everyone changed and updated their fashion except for Violet. In those pictures posted above Mary and Edith are wearing the loose, flowy art deco, sheath(?) I don't know what it's called, but Violet would still be in heavily structured dresses that looked to be from the late 1800s early 1900s. That was a nice touch I thought. -
This is my favorite season, and I just finished binge-ing it for umpth time. No spoilers - when I first watched I didn't really care for Kate, but the more I watched the more I grew to like her. She just seemed surprised to be there every week and making the most of it. I adore Steven and Liam. And more than anyone on GBBO I liked the flavors Liam picked. I think I must have similar tastebuds and cravings lol. One day I will make his millionaire shortbreads with peanut butter caramel, but I'm not nearly skilled enough yet!

I don't feel sorry for her or anyone who has the chance to be in the BB house and play. And I totally get how she's saying that she's ok with going out now and understands the mission of the CO. If she didn't she would be canceled so I totally don't blame her for taking it the way she is. As far as her game play, I see her like Nicole A, someone who had potential but threw her game away for someone she trusted and who took advantage of her. I really hated Cliff.
-
Speaking for myself, I don’t see people saying that black people holding power is unfair. I think they’re saying that it’s unfair that the CO sees Claire and treats her as if she was Ginamarie. The CO sees non-black people as a racial collective instead of individuals, and are painting them with the same characteristics as some of the most racist people on this show, and these individuals don’t deserve that, because they are not that. Claire is so loyal to Tiffany that she would probably vote for her in F2 even though Tiff will be the one to end her game. That’s not someone who’s threatened by black power, but she’s treated as if she is. It has happened on BB before but never celebrated as it is now. Celebrating the same thing that we’ve railed against in the past feels wrong.

That would be a good question to ask Claire, Britini, Derek X, Travis, Christian, SB and Alyssa. They are paying for the way past HGs treated black HGs, when we don't know if they are racist themselves. I guess to the Cookout, someone like Claire is exactly like Jackson, because they're both white and they're in the system. -

I was referring to what I quoted, which was a group of one skin color picking off all the members of another skin color. When it was the Blondtourage it was bad, but when it's the Cookout, it's good. -

The Cookout is being praised for doing exactly the same thing. -

My 10yo does that and I'm trying to correct it, but it's pervasive in language now. -

Seems like Derex is learning how to play BB while in the BB house. He definitely doesn't understand how close he is to leaving and has no sense of urgency. I was dying inside when he said he was going to save his money to play next week! sorry for the double post, I don't know how that happened -

That is true. And if those previous alliances were considered racist and/or misogynist, then this one would be too? -
I know right. I liked how in Celebrity BB they had a mini backyard patio type thing with the hot tub. It always seemed to be open. I remember thinking they should have it for regular BB too.

Not all black people in America descended from slaves, and not all white people in America descended from slave owners.

I saw awhile ago some of the HGs were asking Kyland to try a grilled cheese made with mayo instead of butter, and he said no. Maybe that's why he's putting mayo on the outside of his bread, but if it's already toasted then I don't know. I do know I've used mayo for grilled cheese when I didn't have butter and it was just as good.
