I would dearly wish this to be true but wouldn't bet money on it. JK Simmons would also make a wonderful Commissioner Gordon. I fully support both of these fancastings. Oh that gives me hope 😊. Actually the GL movie will be very different from the previous crapfest. It's supposed to be total reboot about the handoff from an older Jordan to a younger guy (like John Stewart), more like a lethal weapon cop story.

Actually news just came out that Affleck is out for the next Batman movie to be released in 2021 (I think?). But word is they are going to go with a somewhat younger version of Batman, sort of mid-career detective noir (which would be a nice change from previous films). Jensen is 6 years younger than Affleck, but he might still be considered too old. I'm holding out tenuous hope for Jensen to play Hal Jorden in a Green Lantern movie currently being written. I wish he could have managed to take some time off to film previous movie roles he has been offered - I worry a little his profile will be too low when SPN finally does end to be in the running for high profile movie parts.

Manage to throw in a classic movie werewolf (Werewolf in London, not the Supernatural kind) and I would give you ALL my money. My little fan heart would explode!

That's true. And there have been some great tracks in later seasons (Steppenwolf in Adv. Thanatology was super awesome, if also a bit on the nose). But I sometimes think the music supervisor picks them solely based on their nose-adjacent lyrics. Kripke (obviously) and pals really made more of an effort to pick kick a** songs that really boosted the atmosphere in earlier seasons. I guess (to quote my favorite t-shirt) I have gotten old and cranky where music is concerned. (Just realized last week I was complimenting the lyrics fit and this week I'm ragging on it. In my defense, I like The Marshall Tucker Band a lot more than The Guess Who. *Shrug*)

What was up with that music cue when Dean grabbed his bag from the trunk and went to the shed. It was like the XFiles theme with extra Bongos, or something from CSI Miami. Woof! It stuck out like fingers on a chalkboard. Also, did anyone else find that Guess Who song a little too on the nose? No time left left for you, I've found myself some wings? Really guys?

These Spoilers Suck: Bitter Speculation About SPN Spoilers

Man, I'm kinda torn about Mary appearing in tomorrow's episode. On one hand, it might be a chance to mend Dean and Mary's relationship on screen. On the other hand, I'm not convinced that the writers are capable of doing that, or if they even realize there is a problem to fix. Many people (including me) think the writers blew it with Mary's resurrection. But it's so frustrating, cuz I see what they were going for, the execution just sucked. The unexpected relationship difficulties with Dean was actually good, but sleeping with Ketch? Being friggin' brainwashed? Blech. And then they never really fixed it in season 13. Season 14 Mary has been a little better but not much. Did you guys notice that little fond smile she made in the end of 14.2 when Dean came back and the first thing he did was snap at everyone (I wish I could gif on my phone). That moment was so great! It proves it is possible. Unfortunately that moment was probably not scipted. -
This idea is really awesome. It fits with the confusion on Dean's face and the camera really doesn't let you see if there is writing on the pages. But on the other hand, the promo.for Damaged Goods has that line where Dean is pointing a gun at Sam and saying there is only way this can go and this is it (or something to that effect). That seems to imply he is completely sure of his path. If the book were blank I would think he would have some doubt. But, who knows, they could be jerking our chain with promo, implying something that isn't true.

I am also curious about the malleability of Death's library books of fate. Dean used to have many that encompassed his every possible fate. I guess as his circumstances change some books could be eliminated because that cause of death no longer exists (e.g. death by Azazel can't happen now), but new books couldn't be added because all the possible options were already there, right? So the only thing that changed that was the unnatural blending of two universes, screwing up the natural order. That re-wrote his books, leaving Dean with only 2 possible fates. Since Dean now knows them both, it is unlikely either will come to fruition (kills the narrative tension unless the show actually does end this season). So spec only (no spoilers) - does that mean for Dean to get any new fate options, more connections to other universes will be needed? Is the show going to pull more AU craziness? Or since the natural order is already screwed up will his books keep changing on their own?

This episode was great and definitely my favorite of the season so far. I am officially on the Yockey train now. But I didn't notice any payoff for Michael's big plan to crush Dean's spirit. Dean was pretty content in his fake dream. I guess they can't show everything on screen - are we supposed to assume that the reason Michael was able to shove Dean into this false dream (instead of the squirming/drowning scenario) was because Dean was temporarily too crushed to resist?

@Lastcall. Just some theory comparison fun (we'll probably all be wrong). I was thinking the book says Dean has to make a new cage and put himself into it (hence the welding). But all that Nick footage makes me think Lucifer will be back. So Lucifer can stab Michael with an archangel blade (which we know won't kill Dean) and then they can shove Lucifer into Dean's cage. No more archangels and (surprise twist!) Dean doesn't actually have to die even though the show will doubtless spend episodes selling that as the endgame. I REALLY hope they don't go this route though (talk about reliving the S4/S5 Dean bait and switch all over again). But it would return the show to their beloved status quo and could potentially tie into a Lucifer/redemption arc the writers seem to want. Not sure how Sam would fit into this arc though...so fingers crossed I am wrong. -
Lol. Actually I love both those bands too, but everytime the flute comes in, visions of Ron Burgundy start prancing around my head. They used Locomotive Breath in S7! I think the lyrics of Searchin' for a Rainbow fit Dean's bar dream pretty well. A man who has wandered his whole life just wants to give up the grand quest and settle down.

I did the same thing, except it was during the scene when Michael told Jack what a lame burden he is that nobody wanted. Ha ha, truth hurts don't it! Suck it, Jack!

That was The Marshall Tucker Band, I think. Some of their songs have a definite country sound (Fire on the Mountain is an awesome example), but they would be classified as Southern Rock (a la Creedence). I think they'd be in Dean's wheelhouse, but I also think he would agree with me that, although they are awesome, the use of rock flute is an abomination.
-
I guess that's reasonable. I will have to go back and look at his acting more carefully for subtext. He is young, but I imagine he saw a far bit of death while in the Apocalypse World.
-
One weird thing about Jack's dying storyline is that Jack himself didn't really seem that bothered he was going to die. Why should we get worked up about it then? He was pretty zen about the whole affair - no fear, no anger, no "I'll miss u guys". He didn't even know if he would go to heaven or someplace else. What did he say - it will be an adventure? I know they are playing him as a weak-sauce version of Jeff Bridges in Starman, but he got more worked up when Dean said he couldn't go on a hunt (or that Dean didn't matter as much as killing Michael). This feels like a writing and acting fail. Am I missing something?

Why on Earth are they playing it this way?! They could have just as easily played it that Dean didn't trust Michael, but felt he had no choice but to go for it and hope for the best when he said yes. Unless this "he conned me" statement is in reference to something else Michael did to him beyond not giving back control, it makes him look like a gullible fool. Why do the writers keep damaging characters and Canon this season with all these unnecessary writing fails? They weren't written into a corner here. They could have just as easily played this differently with a small dialogue change. -

The dialogue in that sneek peak felt off for some reason, especially Dean's little speech about being good. In combination with the way Cas was looking at him while he said it, I got major 'maybe that is Michael pretending to be Dean' vibes. Since the idea that Michael is hiding in Dean is shot, I guess it must be bad writing. Or maybe, hopefully, it plays better during the actual episode. On the plus side, that is a really cool looking location! Thumbs up to the location scouts. -
I'm not sure they were exactly pointless to the episode, but if you didn't buy the intended pathos, their responses weren't terribly compelling, even if well acted. I admit, I have rewatched most of this season's episodes just so I could revisit and enjoy the parts I liked, but I haven't bothered to do that for Byzantium and Unhuman Nature. Just didn't think it was worth it.

Sorry to quote myself, but it occurred to me that this is one reason why season 7 felt super off as well. The whole Leviathans plotline - funtioning as a agrocorp and preying on Americans bad eating habits? Methinks Gamble was really into The Omnivore's Dilemma (no dig against Michael Pollan - that guy is cool). Sure science fiction and fantasy is great at using fantastical metaphors to contemplate our selves and our civilization, but abstact societal commentary has never really been part of Supernatural's toolbox before.

This episode felt almost nothing like an episode of supernatural to me. It was trying sooooo hard to be quirky, which doesn't really work in the show universe. Almost every episode Speight directs is an homage to a famous movie and I was trying to guess which one this was supposed to be. My best guess is Amelie, maybe? I thought the super cutesy music was just going to a joke for the cold open, but it just kept playing! When they actually revealed the fly monster I felt extreme second hand embarrassment for the show. It was like a prop from a cheesy 50's sci fi B-movie. Actually, that's a good description of the whole episode - cheesy. Sam sat in a truck the whole episode (exciting) and i agree with others about the fidget spinner and reason he gave to continue hunting. They felt out of character. I think FeliciaDay has made new!Charlie too distinct from old!Charlie. I know she has gone through a lot of crap that old!Charlie never did, but I don't really get any whispers of old!Charlie at all. They still had mostly the same life up until the apocalypse. I did like her speech about civilization falling apart, but Supernatural has always been a show more about how people and families fall apart (or don't), not societies as a whole, so the speech felt a little out of place. Dean's response to being called old man was a single bright moment for me. I think that might be my favorite moment in the first 8 epsiodes of the season so far.

I finally got off my butt and registered today but I've been lurking around for a few weeks. I will probably get shy and slink back into the bushes to lurk some more soon enough, but before I do, I just wanted to pipe up and tell you how much I've enjoyed reading everyone's opinions and theories. This is a great little corner of internet to discuss Supernatural and that is due to all the smart, enthusiastic, nice folks that contribute.

When watching, I l thought that Lily used the last sliver of her soul to ressurect Jack so his soul could stay intact and that sacrifice is why she got into heaven. I admit my attention was wandering at that point, but if not then why did she drop dead just at that moment? However, that doesn't really make sense either because the show has established that you don't need a soul to be alive. *shrug*

Agreed that it's a stupid plan. I'm just desperately grasping at straws that Dean's story with Michael isn't over. That storyline was what got me to watch the episodes live this year and so far I feel like Dabb and co. have conned me hard with a shell game, focusing on Jack instead of the actual show leads. I was pretty neutral on Jack at the end of s13, but now I loathe him.
