My DNA report told me that I had a 50-50 chance of not liking cilantro but fortunately I love it. And no one in my family that I know of didn't like it either. There aren't any vegetables I don't like but asparagus and other vegetables known for causing a pee odor never affected the smell of my pee that I know of until recently. And even then it doesn't happen all the time. I have no idea why.

I hear you but they seem to be pretty savvy about some things. I'm not that tech. savvy either but I would have known that the information was coming to me at an email address and everything we do online can be traced unless precautions are taken. I felt like it fed into the stereotype of seniors being clueless about certain things. And Alfie not thinking about that or telling them beforehand was even harder to swallow. If he's supposedly that tech. savvy I don't know if I buy that that would have been lost on him. 🤷♀️

I love to cook but it took me a while to master both of these vegetables. So you're not alone. Where asparagus is concerned, par boiling them first for a few minutes in a shallow frying pan, then sautéing them in a pan with butter, oil and garlic and Italian seasoning works best for me. Recipes usually tell you you don't need to put them in water first but I find that they come out too stiff and woody when I don't do it. By the time the inside cooks the outside is either burned or overcooked and mushy. Also, speaking of woody, I try to avoid the thicker asparagus because it tends to be woody. And cutting off the bottom more than you think you need to works best too because that can be woody too.

I feel that - the Mid Atlantic states are getting a wallop from the weather this season. The storms have all been tracking south of the Northeast for the most part. Usually we have had more snow by now. It's been a weird season because the snow accumulation has been deeper South of me when it's usually the other way around. Even when we do get snow the Southern part of CT has seen more so far than the Northern part. I am not complaining but sorry to hear that others are dealing with it. And Winter's not over yet, we still have another month or more of this and weather patterns can change. Oh I love serving pork loin or chops with Brussels sprouts. I like them roasted or grilled with dark edges and a balsamic glaze on top.

Yeah, when I was in the GS in NYC in the 1960s we had a little of both worlds. I actually was never asked to sew or knit or any kind of "finishing school" stuff, but I was asked to cook something that would be suitable for camping. And we were taken to parks on a regular basis to learn how to start a fire and hike, pitch a tent, etc. You reminded me of how the badges were busywork. I had forgotten about that. Yeah, egging was not a thing in NYC. I think that's more of a suburban thing. Like toilet papering someone's yard. Speaking of the GS, I have a photo of me as a Brownie I keep meaning to post but I've been busy lately and just haven't gotten around to it. Soon!

Pet Peeves: Aka Things That Make You Go "Gah!"

I'm having the same problem. I think I posted here about the nightmare I went through buying jeans on Amazon in a style they stopped carrying at Kohls. I had to buy several pairs in different sizes to find 2 that fit and looked good and returning them was not as easy and convenient as they promised - long story. Now Kohl's has mostly wide and flare legs. Stuff that mostly works on a young person's figure. And a tall person's. Being short, those wide legs look ridiculous on me. I can only get away with them in stretchy pull on fabrics and even then they don't always work on me. -
Me neither but I don't think he would have done it just out of greed either. I think the percentage of "Mom liked you best" is a little higher. I've known male twins and the rivalry, resentment and jealousy can be off the charts and ridiculous. I got the feeling that giving away the money was just the last straw. It was even worse because in doing so he was making himself even more beloved in the eyes of others and that rubbed salt in an open wound.

Yes, like most work friendships they usually don't transition beyond that. Yes, I used to be one of them. Absolutely. It takes a long time to evict anyone in NYC but I've read that the housing authority in NY rarely questions an eviction by a co-op board. I just wanted to say that I thought that it was really dumb of Mattie to tie that pen to a personal email account. She and her husband should be smarter than that. And the way she acted about it when caught looking in the desk drawer was suspicious. She's getting sloppy and now she's made an enemy of someone that could really hurt her.

I call shenanigans on that episode. I think that chef probably had already quit but the episode needed some drama so they brought him back to act OTT. And the rat pellets were probably planted there too. I think they all knew the place was going to close by the time of filming anyway. At that point I think what the show was doing to "help" the place went toward making it easier to sell. -

I knew they were going to pick the first house. It looked like someone had just moved in and hadn't unpacked everything yet. It was a decent house but I liked house #2 a little better. -
As we might expect, opinion on that is divided on party lines. More Republicans want less foreign aid and more Democrats either want it to stay the same or increase. I don't remember foreign aid being a big issue with Republicans until the last decade or so. It was always looked at as a bipartisan issue AFAIK. I think this issue became yet another one to add to the pile of grievances Trump wanted white Americans to latch onto by framing it that money was "being taken out of their mouths" and being given to non-Americans, especially brown ones. Meanwhile as was said above, it's only so that money can instead go into the pockets of the very rich in the way of tax cuts, not the pockets of average "Joe" that Trump has duped into thinking that he has their best interests at heart. This article from "goodauthority.org" has the results of an interesting survey done in December 2024 on this subject. As you might expect, the only group that favors cutting back foreign aid to any great degree are Republicans. It also shows results by age, race, gender and level of education. https://goodauthority.org/news/democrats-and-republicans-really-disagree-on-us-foreign-aid/

Actually, no, Christianity is not what anyone says it is if that means turning your back on the poor and showing no charity in your heart for people less fortunate than you, not just yourself or groups of people you think are "more deserving" than others. What these self-professed "Christians" are doing is in direct conflict with Jesus's actions and quotes as written in the Bible so even if they're fundamentalists who interpret the Bible and all its stories and quotes literally, they're contradicting the word of Christ and their own beliefs with this. So it's not "what Christianity currently means". It's only what CORRUPT, HYPOCRITICAL people who are Christians in name only mean.

I hear you, but to be fair judging from what I saw when I dined at that HK restaurant just about everyone there is young and I am sure using that experience as a springboard to something better. No one is looking at that as the pinnacle of their career and I would be surprised if any of them stayed there for more than a few years. I just think both Egypt and Hannah are more suited to the job. They would not be head chefs in the sense of Gordon because ultimately he is in charge of his restaurants and they would take their orders from him. And I just don't think Kyle wants to do that at this point nor is his personality suited to it. He wants to be the owner and head chef of a restaurant. I think Egypt and Hannah would be grateful for the opportunity to advance their careers by being head chef at a HK restaurant where Gordon calls the shots. Hannah and Egypt seem better suited to take direction and put out the best food they can from a menu someone else created. Because basically, that's what they'd be doing. Those HK restaurants are very formulaic and based on what we see them cook over and over again every season on the show.

Health and Wellness Chit-Chat: Your Primary Care Topic
Yeah No replied to JTMacc99's topic in Health & Wellness
My husband goes through something like this because he drives for a living and often doesn't know when he's working until the night before. So he has had to reschedule all medical appointments, sometimes several times before one sticks. But at least he has a "home base", which helps. The only suggestion I can make is find a doctor at a location you visit more often than others that is willing to see you via virtual visits most of the time. Perhaps they can work with urgent care facilities and drug store clinics if you need to see someone on site for anything not too specialized. And if tests need to be done requests can be submitted to local test facilities. Quest Diagnostics has 2,000 locations nationwide. -

Yes there's the practice I used to go to before my long time primary dr. retired at the very beginning of the pandemic. My husband still goes there to his replacement and loves the dr. but he hates the staff and how they make coding mistakes that have resulted in unfair bills that he's had to have them straighten out. This has happened to him 3 times already in just a few years. That's one reason I switched to the medical group at the hospital I use now. The coding is bullet proof plus this is at a state hospital so I think that helps. So like you are dealing with at your dentist, I am dealing with the good dr./bad staff issue myself. Not that my current doctors are bad, I just think there's some kind of staffing or other problem at this hospital since the pandemic and it's impacting their effectiveness. Because like I say, they were never like this before the pandemic. I am still thinking it over. Thank you. I have been seeing my dentist for over 20 years too and I don't know what I would do without him and the others at his practice. For a brief time several years ago he got frustrated with not being paid in a timely fashion by some insurance companies so he dropped them. Unfortunately it included my insurance and I couldn't switch at the time to one he took. So I was forced to find another dentist. WOW was that a lesson in how difficult THAT is! And the only one I could find anywhere near me that was taking new patients was truly awful. She wanted to sell me all sorts of procedures I knew for a fact that I didn't need - I guess she didn't factor in that thanks to a great dentist before her I actually knew what was going on inside my mouth and what I needed and didn't need. And she acted like I needed these things urgently, too! Fortunately the next year my original Dr. started taking my insurance again and hasn't ever stopped since. Whew! He's only a few years younger than me so I worry he'll retire and close up the practice. I hope that doesn't happen any time soon. -
I'm saddened that we have this extreme myopia and selfishness these days that many people are only thinking about themselves and what concerns them and not the big picture of the world in general and what's good for it as a whole. They have compromised social conscience. And miss the forest for the trees.

Wow, he may not be taking it per this: I hate to say this but I think it would be for the best if he doesn't take it. Maybe he is getting better offers since winning and realized that he wouldn't really like it there. To be honest I think he is more suited for a different area and a restaurant where he would have more control over the menu, etc. That's not even a criticism because I think he is actually overqualified for the job. But more than that, his ego is too big to think that job is worthy of him. Which is why I was surprised that Gordon would pick him. He usually knows better than to pick someone like that for a head chef position in one of his restaurants. That said, if he doesn't take it I hope it goes to Hannah because right now I think that would be perfect for her. Not that she isn't creative and technically overqualified, but I think she needs some time yet to grow before she's ready to move on to bigger things. Here's a link to the article with that interview and quote: https://www.goldderby.com/article/2025/hells-kitchen-kyle-timpson-hannah-flora-interview-gordon-ramsay/

After reading this article it brought home for me that a lot of people these days vote only based on whether or not they "like" a candidate, not after a careful consideration of them in any other way, such as their character or their policies. Or if they do consider policies they latch onto what they like and tune out the rest. And even if that person later does something they didn't anticipate that would normally be a deal breaker for a more reasoned person it is not for them and they still defend them. It still reminds me of that German immigrant woman in my father's senior center who came here after WWII. She once confided to my dad years ago that she still liked Hitler. Meanwhile my father was half Jewish. He just ignored the comment and told me he thought she was crazy.

I suppose it's no coincidence and it's not lost on everyone here that Musk is a South African and suddenly Trump is trying to make it easier for white racists to come to this country. I wonder who gave him that idea?

Interesting article but the link didn't work for me. Here's a link that will work for everyone: Link to Washington Post Article: Trump’s Gaza proposal frustrates his new Arab American supporters

You took my comment out of context. I was talking about how Trump has a grudge against Democrats stemming from his rejection in NYC by builders and real estate people he identified as being from some "Democratic elite" that "snubbed" him decades ago. They had good reason to snub him based on his dishonest and unethical business practices. It wasn't motivated by some kind of unfair prejudice against him. But he never let that grudge go and continued to try to stick it to Democrats in his first term as president, first with nasty insults and then in action. So is it any wonder that they would turn around and do those things to him? He brought it on himself. My mother used to recount an old Sicilian expression that translated meant "He who spits in the sky gets it back in his face". I usually hate that kind of "tit for tat" retaliatory stuff but in this case I really can't blame them. Interestingly any tax cuts Republicans make have a way of coming back in the form of running up the deficit. Under Trump's first term, on a yearly basis he ran up the deficit more than any other president in US history by quite a bit. - $2 trillion per year in office vs. $1.6 trillion for Biden and $1.2 trillion for Obama. So much for cutting spending! And any tax cuts they make benefit the rich far more than the middle and lower classes who still end up paying a disproportionate share of taxes. I don't get how middle and lower class Republicans don't see this. They are big on tax cuts but their party doesn't cut taxes in a way that in the end benefits them. I remember when Reagan was president he made a big deal about tax cuts. I was in grad. school at the time taking advantage of the tuition remission I got for being employed at the university. I didn't make that much money at the time and was struggling financially as it was. I got free tuition for my first year but then Reagan suddenly instituted a special new tax on tuition remission, but only for people who were getting it for grad. school. It was a hefty tax - fully 30% of the entire tuition bill. It CRUSHED me financially. I had to drop out for a semester to get a second job to afford it. I had to work in a freaking GAS STATION mini mart part time after my full time job and on weekends to avoid dropping out. Fortunately that tax was repealed after a year and I was able to finish my degree program without it. So don't get me started on Republicans and taxes!

I find it ironic that we have misogynists taking up a crusade to keep sports "fair" for cisgender women. The same ones that oppose abortion. Yeah, something else is motivating them and I'm SURE it's not caring about women. I think it's very sad and telling that in the past week I have seen at least 5 articles, including this one say "since Trump came back into power" like they're admitting that he's a dictator. Since when has anyone referred to any American president as "coming into power"? It's scary. Men are coming into women's fitting rooms now with their daughters, girlfriends and wives. Getting into the stall with them as they undress. I have heard some suspicious sounds coming from them at times and it has weirded and creeped me out. I don't care if they come in but I draw the line at that kind of stuff. This is a very complicated issue for sure and I don't know if there's a one size fits all, blanket answer for it. I do know that here in CT one young cisgender woman runner has alleged that she always won when matched against cisgender women but that all stopped for good when trans athletes were allowed to compete. After that, no cisgender women won. I don't want to see trans people prohibited from competing in their chosen identity but I'm still struggling with stuff like the above. The evidence right now seems to be inconsistent as to whether trans women have any real advantage over cisgender women, so I'm keeping an open mind for now. LOL, yeah, not everyone grew up going to Greenwich Village every weekend 40/50 years ago like I did. I have news for these scared people, they have been going to your rest room forever without you knowing it, so just get over it!

At least they're making him endearing now, as opposed to just creepy/weird like in the first few episodes. I like this Connor now. There's more to him than meets the eye. I hope the show keeps letting him evolve. Yup and those were the hours when my husband managed auto repair shops. Honestly I don't think we've ever seen a customer in the place, have we? I don't know why they haven't gone down that road. There are lots of comedic opportunities there. I have to say the portrayal of the shop itself is a little disappointing to me. I get what they're trying to do with Ruben but I'm just not finding it funny. The shop itself does look REALLY authentic, especially for its time, though, I have to hand it to them! Yeah, and not much better used on Ebay. That's probably because most of them are vintage since the company discontinued it in 1996. Although I read on Google that they came out with a new one last year. Why it's so expensive I don't know. You can get much better synthesizers for less these days.
