  1. I kind of had a "kid sister" look, so many guys didn't see me as dating material. This was especially the case in my 20s when I was hanging out with a group of people about 5-10 years older. I wasn't "hot younger woman" material.
  2. In cultures where multiple/sister wives were historically common, the child of the subsequent wife is seen to have lesser status - unless the child is male and the children of the first wife were all girls. Whoever has the first male child, well, wins. Even though it's 100% HIS fault.
  3. Bullying for boys is more physical while we are more likely to pull the emotional thing. My son is on the smaller side and though he has tons of friends, I do worry (as do all moms) that he’d be picked on as he gets older. Or maybe girls won’t like him because he doesn’t have the “jock” look. He’s a very nice kid and very bright. I also worry that he could have body image issues. We try not to talk about weight and food portions in front of him, but I worry he picks things up anyway since my husband is on meds for diabetes.
  4. Lots of countries being taken over by other countries as well. And that's pretty much global. Wars happen. Empires happen. Some of my ancestors are from an ethnic group that eventually settled in places like Myanmar and Laos. That's actually far from where most of my ancestors are from (southeast coastal regions of China). And my maiden name traces back to a duke from the central region of the country. And yeah, my Ancestry test does say I have roots in "central China."
  5. Girls might gossip. Though once I've seen something along the lines of this in the bathroom: "What do you get when you put F and UCK? Firetruck!!!" This wasn't a middle school or high school bathroom - this was at a music school where I took piano lessons. Very young children could be seeing that - like kids just learning how to read. I'm not sure the age of the girl who wrote it - to me (I was 10 or so at the time), it seemed weird that a girl would do that. We're more like so-and-so is fat or something to that extent.
  6. I didn’t think “like” was used by males all that much.
  7. Are there any guys here who could tell us? I have a feeling it's mostly women here. And yeah, at my all girls' school, some mean things were indeed written.
  8. I've seen some bra companies (for example) offer several shades of "nude" so I tend to use it interchangeably.
  9. And there was the bathroom stall graffiti.
  10. I just saw a trailer for the musical adaptation of The Notebook and just about BAWLED my eyes out.
  11. Pants weren't part of my (girls only) high school's uniform until Fall 1997 when it was added in. We were, of course, allowed to wear pants on non-uniform days. And our gym uniform wasn't a skirt with bloomers attached (hadn't been since at least the 70s). They still can't wear larger earrings (as far as I know), more than one ring in each hand, nor can they wear non-religious symbols around their necks. No non-religious headwear, either.
  12. They also can’t tell without a paper trail for DNA you didn’t get from your parents. That’s why siblings can have different results.
  13. They exist, but they're SUPPOSED to be meant for people with skin tones VERY DIFFERENT from said legging colour. Like, I'd look fine in a medium brown, but Susan Kelechi Watson from This is Us would look like she wasn't wearing pants.
  14. Peeve: I'm part of a group on a social platform for people from my age cohort who are neither true Generation Xers or Millennials. I posted about the young lady and her skin tone outfit on that group and got nothing but negative comments, telling me to stop. I'm an adult and I'm allowed to say things I want to say. I openly admit that I can be a "pearl clutcher" at times, and I really think I should be allowed. Being the way I am is probably WHY a lot of people who think like me keep their mouths shut these days. That said, I'm really glad that people here aren't like that! Or at least I don't participate on shows where there are tons of flame wars!
  15. This. And if you mean me, good thing that girl was not at the office. Looking like you’re still working from home where pants are optional is not office appropriate. I also saw a guy wearing a skin tone top once. Same area.
  16. Speaking of hospitals, I was at one recently for an on-going/chronic health issue that I'll always have and thought I had been transported back to 1995 because one young lady was wearing the almost-to-exact outfit I owned back then (minus the fishnets)!
  17. Did they look like they were coming from the gym?
  18. I don't know if I had a post flagged or what, but I tried posting something from my phone and it didn't go. Anyway, I was mentioning that I didn't understand a lot of what younger people wear these days. I get the retro 90s looks, but what's with skin tone leggings (especially when there's VPL) and hip length tops?
  19. They can differentiate between regions within one country for some places. I also had Ancestry done and they were able to tell which parts of China my ancestors are from (I'm mostly southern/southeastern, but also have elements of people from the central region (my maiden name traces back to that area) as well as a non-Han ethnic group). I honestly was NOT surprised that I had non-Han ancestry (since people always mistaken me for other Asian ethnicities), but was expecting Thai, Vietnam or the Philippines.
  20. I read my book to my son's kindergarten class! The children were behaving like, well, 5 year olds, talking over each other, but in general, were paying attention (the teacher had to tell them to "crisscross applesauce" a few times and to put their hands up if they have any comments...at the end of the story). Even kids who only celebrated December 31 could relate, as did kids who celebrated other cultural holidays - whether it's New Year or not. My dad said it would only be relatable to kids from families like mine and boy was he WRONG!
  21. Okay, it's not really a holiday, but it might as well be one...what's everyone serving for the Big Game on Sunday? We're ordering pizza from a neighbourhood joint. The husband and I like very different toppings (I like mine with lots of vegetables) and a small bag of tortilla chips with guacamole and pico. It's just going to be the three of us. We typically also get wings, but this year, this year, there'll be a lot of eating in the days before and after - Lunar New Year's Eve is Friday and then Valentine's Day is the following Wednesday. There's also pancake Tuesday on the 13th and we're going to be going to our annual Spin of Prosperity Dinner (a Lunar New Year tradition my parents started 35+ years ago) next week too!
  22. I wonder if he did that because it helped him know when to go in.
  23. I STILL can't believe that Joni Mitchell has never performed at the Grammys in her long, long career. I actually don't live too far from a cafe she performed at before she became famous. The cafe isn't there anymore. It's now a men's clothing store.

    Season 8

Finished the season. Loved the finale, not sure about the one with the former nun. I get that she wanted a full makeover/re-do, but she's crunchy to the core. It's like a full 180 lifestyle.
  25. How did everyone survive the last few days without Primetimer? I finished Queer Eye Season 8. Pretty much it.
