What does this even mean? I assume the line between canada and the US? Ugh.

Isn’t capable of keeping competent advisors who are qualified to do the job? Isn’t capable of showing concern for anyone disadvantaged or down on their luck. Isn’t capable of stringing two coherent sentences together? Isn’t aware of how the government works?

Is Stallone despicable, though? Voight and Gibson are beyond despicable. Bit I thought Stallone was a cultured , reasonable man. I could be wrong. i haven’t paid that much attention.
-
Well, he is one of the more despicable human beings. I cannot, truly.

He is just pissing on the white house like an old, incontinent bulldog. The military parade is apparently something he wanted since his last excursion into the presidency, and he wants to hold it over the other leaders in the world. What a moron. But yes, we aren’t saving money, we are spending it on things to nake Trump self important, and he just likes jerking the economy around, because a reaction makes him feel important. It is terrifying. I think he thinks people will make more movies in the US, and I honestly expect some movies are being made, or at least planned, that qualify as propaganda films for trump. Trump as a superhero, or old west trump. Or Jesus Trump.

All of these are real issues. They require creativity and understanding from people trying to provide services, and one hopes that the people who have come to the new environment will also learn and change.

I though about bringing word definitions into it at one point, but I didn’t. I do think that a human resources guy can suddenly look around the staff meeting and say ‘wow, everyone here is approximately my age and appearance, we are all married with at least one child, except for Joe, who happens to be gay, but he went to the same school I did.” And it isn’t deliberate or exclusionary, it is the way people pick people. So it takes a conscious effort to do things differently. Also, I think ‘white privilege’ may not mean the same thing as privilege. I think ‘white privilege’ doesn’t just mean that human resources subconsciously picks people like him for jobs. It means that people have received systemic advantages and disadvantages as groups for a long time (even if individuals of any sort can buck the trend) that it systemically more difficult for one population than for another. To compare to another word there is, of course, ‘racism’ and then there is ‘systemic racism’ and they don’t mean exactly the same thing.

I won’t cut and paste the entire article, but AAVE is something that has been studied a fair bit, and I remember encountering a lot of articles about it at some point. It clearly did have an impact on how black children were perceived in schools, by their teachers, for example. I remember when I moved to Canada I got stuck on the pronouciation of a few words, but it was no big deal when I learned them. I’m sure it can be difficult to navigate not speaking the language and that people who don’t speak the common tongue are disadvantaged. I imagine that the best we cqn do as a society is provide ways for people to bridge the language gap while they hopefully learn the new language, also with help. I know some schools provide classes in Spanish and bilingual teachers, although that is probably being ended as a program in the states. More to the point of privilege is the reaction to native speakers of AAVE. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/African-American_Vernacular_English Social perception and context Main article: African-American Vernacular English and social context African-American Vernacular suffers from persistent stigma and negative social evaluation in American culture. By definition, as a vernacular dialect of English, AAVE has not received the social prestige of a standard dialect, leading to widespread and long-standing misconceptions that it is a grammatically inferior form of English, which linguistics research of the twentieth century has debunked. However, educators and social commentators traditionally have advocated for eliminating AAVE usage through the public-education system for a variety of reasons, ranging from a continued belief that AAVE is intrinsically deficient to arguments that its use, by being stigmatized in certain social contexts, is socially limiting.[137] Some of the harshest criticism of AAVE or its use has come from African Americans themselves.[138][139][140] A conspicuous example was the "Pound Cake speech", in which Bill Cosby criticized some African Americans for various social behaviors, including the way they talked. I remember being shocked to find out, when I moved to Canada in the late 60s, that people in Quebec who were bilingual, spoike both french and english, made less money and were generally disadvantaged over people who spoke only english. That is some serious prejudice, considering. I hope it has changed.

Because women are on average lighter and the center of gravity is lower, which balances their weight when carried by a group. Reagan was suffering from Alzheimers at the end of his term. with 47 it has seemed obvious for some time that he has a problem. It may be concealed bt his tendency to be petty and kind of stupid un general.

Well, pay those words. They will serve you well. Again and for the last time, if men are on average taller and object design is geared to this average height, it is their privilege to fit most SUVs and walkers and wheelchairs and you are disadvantaged. Is it the same as someone saying ‘woman. Can’t be an engineer’? No. But it is part of life and ‘eliminating DEI’ has an effect in many of these areas. Meanwhile, it isn’t that clear cut. Because your husband was disadvantaged because of his disability does not mean he didn’t also benefit in some ways from white privilege. As you point out with your ‘Italian American’ example, in a backhanded way. Because you choose to trivialize the minor inconveniences of a dental chair does not mean that you are immune from the health impacts of a medication that is only tested on men. Because there is prejudice towards one group does not negate prejudice to another. anyway, i am not saying you are wrong. I’m saying that isn’t the point.

Gathering statistical data to identify problems to fix, say the possible need for more primary care facilities in communities of color, is not painting individuals with the same brush. It is using sociology for what it was made for. Being fair to people is partially finding the disadvantages so you can correct them. Also, as you point out elsewhere, being a small woman of any color means that things don’t fit, which is an issue if you become an astronaut. Women’s ski boots are different, running shoes are different. Is there one woman with (say) narrow hips who isn’t helped by an alteration? There is a difference between there being a general shortage of eggs and a shortage of eggs in your specific corner market here is a difference between you having a good job and an unemployment crisis generally apples and oranges nothing to do with fairness hence, intersectionality

It is a privilege to live in a world where things are tailored to your size and shape. It is also an advantage, which is one of the reasons it is a privilege.
-
We need electric cars. People have called for having musk removed from the company as a solution.
-
Yeah. Most of the privilege is statistical. Racism is not over in the US because we had a black president. A woman can go to church and dress modestly and not be raped, it doesn’t mean those factors are directly related (i mean that doesn’t imply women who are raped are immodest and atheist). Stephen Hawking was a famous white disabled person who made many discoveries and that doesn’t mean that being in a wheelchair …. The world is full of individual stories. Not to say that individual’s stories aren’t important. Not to say that we don’t change things one individual at a time. Ut when you talk about a lot of orivilege you are talking about the experience of the group.

Snd right off the bat, an element of compliance. Maybe makes it easier to get them to do the next thing.

Don’t buy Tesla for now

Trump isn’t the cause of he is a symptom. This was setting itself up before him and will be a problem after.

Well, yes. I’m losing the thread of this discussion. my final: If you want men to be open and sensitive you will have to teach them to do this and show them it is ok. No this hasn’t happened, any more than in the past decades woman have become equal. These are ongoing issues. Good on you if your kids are free of it and your male friends also, bit I’m betting that is rare. 47 is aggravating an already big income disparity and it is a problem. He is more or less okay with this because he is a poor student of history and has limited concern for others. It may be a biggie for some more men but a lot of marginalized people of all races and genders have felt the effects of this disparity for years. some may have thought 47 would help but I suspect there is a long term program to demonize liberal values, including mainstream religious values, and that people found a spokesperson in 47 and he was able to rally a diverse group to their cause. https://apps.urban.org/features/wealth-inequality-charts/ the wealth inequality charts tell a tale of many things, including a lot of white privilege

Who may not know how to do it. It is learned. They may be embarassed. Trauma may have made them unable to trust. If we are listening, listen to it being a problem. Not just for men, either.

https://open.maricopa.edu/culturepsychology/chapter/stereotypes-and-gender-roles/ “Cross-cultural studies reveal that children are aware of gender roles by age two or three and can label others’ gender and sort objects into gender categories. At four or five, most children are firmly entrenched in culturally appropriate gender roles (Kane, 1996). When children do not conform to the appropriate gender role for their culture, they may face negative sanctions such as being criticized, bullied, marginalized or rejected by their peers. A girl who wishes to take karate class instead of dance lessons may be called a “tomboy” and face difficulty gaining acceptance from both male and female peer groups (Ready, 2001). Boys, especially, are subject to intense ridicule for gender nonconformity (Coltrane and Adams, 2008; Kimmel, 2000)” this stuff starts early and is truely pervasive.

Sure. I’m not going to completely get it, not like you want. Although you might be surprised. Toxic parents are very similar, the world over. About the boys: talking about your feelings is learned. I speak as someone who was not heard growing up. I still have a lot of difficulty and if I’m hesitant I will often be dismissed. It is a skill. Learned. Little boys and neglected girls may not always be taught it. But it needs to be learned at some point. We teach little boys to be a certain way. We could do better as far as having a voice at the intersectional table, I don’t know. I have read sOme books about female scientists that have spoken openly about their issues as women and Asians. I don’t think it is hugely mainstream as a topic. i am sorry you feel often dismissed when you try to share your experiences.

Yes, some people preferred uniforms because they require less thought and don’t showcase economic differences, good arguments on either side. And the principal in my high school in the IS was put in his place for objecting to ridiculous infractions because the kids of influential people went to the school. So that’s privilege. but whatever is the standard, some kids gonna rebel. Having no say is bad parenting, in my opinion. I had a lot of that, too. My mother didn’t care what I wanted to wear and every time she thought about laying out money for it, she felt resentment. It was beat to not deal with it.

Most white guys were probably not repeatedly lectured by their parents on how to act so they don’t get shot out of hand when stopped by the police for a broken tail light. That is a huge privilege right there. You get to not live in fear. First privilege is not living in fear. Next, medical treatments optimized for your body. A lot of things your average white guy probably doesn’t even think about are pretty big privileges. Full privileges, not sure what that means. White guy with medical disability probably better off than black guy, other things being equal. Doesn’t mean people don’t talk over the guy in the wheelchair. He is going to be dismissed all the time. Still privileged. i don’t know what to say to your post, really. I’m sorry. I’m sure you have encountered dismissed and outright prejudice and I am sorry that happened. Feel free to educate me on this. i’m sure I miss a lot of things.

In the sixties I moved from midwest us to canada. The public school in Toronto had uniforms but no one wore them. I don’t remember a lot of issues, although that means no one came in pasties. in the previous US school we got a lot of lip from the principle, boys wearing beads!, but the superintendant of schools stopped him. Daughter went to our school.
