  1. I like Brenda (the actress and the character) but is anyone else distracted by her accent? She sounds like someone from the Caribbean (perhaps someone whose parents are from Puerto Rico but grew up in the US). An accent in both English and Spanish that's influenced by Caribbean Spanish sounds way different. The other non-Mexican characters have different accents as well. Epifanio's Spanish definitely doesn't sound like anything from any region of Mexico I'm familiar with. Nor does Teresa's. However, their accents (IMO) are not so obviously from a particular region so it makes it easier to try to pass them off as something else.
  2. I understand. In your case, the student loans were a means to a career that will pay for itself. I don't think anyone on this show (except maybe Sonia) has a career that would warrant student loans. I know Sonia doesn't earn a whole lot but if she holds the MSW degree, then she has some options that are available to he, some of which can be done in addition to her day job like counseling, early intervention, bilingual school social worker, etc. Nick actually has quite a bit of student debt. I'm not surprised that lilly doesn't have. She sounds like she's been supporting herself and I also don't think she finished college. She's only 24. How many things can she have done by that age? On another note, does anyone else think maybe she's older than 24? It's not just one thing that leads me to suspect that, but rather a combination of things I'm noticing about her.
  3. Frankie and Nina are adorable. But there was no indication of a crush or anything. The last episodes seem so thrown together. I didn't follow the case this week the way I usually do. I'll have to watch it again. Does anyone know why Nina's always wearing those vest-type outfits? She wears a lot of them and they aren't flattering on anyone. Plus she's top heavy and the outfits make her look frumpy. She's too cute for that.
  4. Not knocking you but I just wanted to point out that there are many educated people who are economically disadvantaged and qualify for other types of financial aid. Also, there are options for minimizing the cost of college. money qualify for grants. There are also community colleges, testing options like CLEP, jobs and city universities. The NYU language proficiency exam alone is worth a whole semester of credits. I am educated but I've never taken out a student loan. I used to like Nick also but watching him kiss the dogs turned me off. I know some people are cool with that. Sonia is a better woman than me for sitting through that.
  5. If Nick isn't attracted to Sonia, I wouldn't assume it's because she's bigger than a size 8. Just because YOU think she's big and that being a big girl is something undesirable to you doesn't mean he feels the same way. I don't know what you mean about it being fashionable to be accepting of all body types. You mentioned that Nick is in excellent shape. Have you seen something to indicate that Sonia isn't? They have been doing the same physical activities. People are built differently even with exercise. And he looks like he does some weight training. Not something I'd expect Sonia to do but that doesn't mean she's not also in great shape. My brother- in-law was visiting last time I was watching and remarked that it's too bad there are no full-figured women on the show. I've been wondering if she's happily married. I guess not. Are any of the experts?
  6. Lol ok. I tried to give him the benefit of the doubt. He does seem to love the beach bum lifestyle.
  7. Whose car were Tom and Lilly riding in? I assumed it was his.
  8. I agree with all of this, too. Heather keeps saying stranger as if to reinforce the distance between them. Nick & Sonia are a nice couple. I think because they're going into it with their eyes wide open they're less likely that each other on a pedestal and set themselves up for disappointment. They're leaving romantic to fall in love. They're the most mature couple this season. Tom & lilly make me think they were selected for entertainment value. The bus shock, the speculation about what will happen, the big buildup. Was all that butt rubbing necessary? Ugh.
  9. Has anyone seen his mom? She has squinty eyes, too. They have the same smile. It's cute. Even her attitude was laid back like his. She was like, eh well you always make good choices so... Maybe he smokes pot, I dunno. But it's genetics that causes hissquinty eyes, not weed.
  10. I don't think Nick is someone who has clients, maybe more like customers lol. They showed a clip of him showing a property. He was dry doing that, too. Is he the same guy who said he was silly and was riding his bike? Also, what did Pepper mean when she said he could underwrite Sonia's mission-aligned lifestyle?
  11. Totally agree. I thought Heather and Derek would have been cute. But she seems uninterested and he's maybe a little too high-energy for her. I do like him and his mom, though. He has a smiling face, just like her, if you take a good look. Heather, unfortunately, looks a little hard. It could be nerves and it could still work but right now it doesn't look like fun. I can't read Nick. I would say she's not his type but he seemed dull even before meeting her. He's probably shy. On one hand he said he didn't feel comfortable telling her she looked pretty but didn't he also tell his mom that he did tell her? Did I imagine that?
  12. Her friend tried to steer her away from that unflattering look. It's not a good look for her, even much less so since the dress wasn't even altered to fit her properly. I'm not even sure who that dress would look good on. If you're going to do a halter with that much cleavage, it should fit properly and not flatten your boobs. And I agree with the friend, you don't want to call so much attention to that area the first time he's meeting you.
  13. I guess I misunderstood. I thought she meant romantic gestures like buying flowers. I'm not into flowers but I have a friend who is and is always bummed that her husband never buys them for her unless she specifically asks him to. Which, to me, is crazy because she could just buy them herself. What I thought lilly meant was her husband knows she likes flowers so he surprises her with them. BTW I have no idea if she likes flowers or not. Just using that as an example. It could easily be a massage when she's had a long day even if she didn't ask for it.
  14. Why on earth would they have picked the YouTuber for the tall black guy? That's just not a good match, in my opinion. If her YouTube channel was already successful, then maybe. But he is self-sufficient and would expect his partner to be also. He was raised by a single mom and would probably not identify with her doing YouTube as a profession and not making money from it. Also, the living room where she was sitting with her YouTube camera looked more luxurious than his apartment. I dunno. I just don't see it. Does anyone know how long Derek was in the military? They were vague about his current career so I got the sense that he was in the military for a while. Did I miss something?
  15. I don't see anything wrong with being "just" a renter, especially if you're looking to get married. Nothing wrong with owning either but I think it's nice when a married couple starting out can buy their place together.
  16. I still watch this show but only on demand. It's always been ridiculous and unrealistic but I could still get into the storylines. Nowadays, not so much. Harvey has always been obnoxious to me. The fact that he hired Mike and put his career and firm in jeopardy just to amuse himself is awful. He's extremely loyal to Mike, which is great. However, he's not the least bit humble about a situation that he, an accomplished attorney brought on himself and everyone else around him. Mike is also available obnoxious, though less so than Harvey. Also, why aren't we getting to see him use his mind in jail? He's been average, at best, intelligence-wise. His brain was his claim to fame. And he had way more street smarts before. I think he should do his time and not entertain any schemes to get him out beforehand. I know he misses Rachel but isn't she busy being a paralegal/law student/pro Bono lawyer in training/hero to a guy on death row? She can wait. Or, better yet, the relationship can crumble under the strain of prison. I liked her more before she got romantically involved with Mike. She was smart, ambitious, and human. Now she just whines and obsesses over Mike like he's a kid at a sleepover and he left his retainer at home. Mike being a fraud shows poor character. He didn't need to be a fake lawyer to help people. Donna is annoying. She should really get a man. Or reconnect with her dad. Or do some part-time local theater work. Or get a new job since she has nothing work-related to do. I don't remember Donna being this needy. She tries to be a hero and clearly needs too much reassurance. Jessica seems aloof and oddly dressed for the office. But she's Jessica. So that's that. Louis is written inconsistently so it's hard to figure out where he's coming from. The house thing seems silly since he clearly doesn't have the resources to buy a suit that fits. He could ask Donna to help him.
  17. I WISH they would bring back Savi. It made no sense whatsoever for her to disappear off the face of the earth like that. Imagine if she came back. There would be some real drama with Savi, Joss and Harry. PlotTSD...perfect name for her BS
  18. I watch it. Getting caught up on a couple of episodes. I wish there was more chatter about it.
  19. I've been trying to figure this out also. She happened to meet him at the taco truck joss introduced her to. Which makes perfect sense and is no fault of her own. If I was in Kate's shoes I would have been worried that he's still into joss considering he said he got married hastily because of a failed relationship. I would have been concerned about that even before I knew joss was his ex and then even more concerned knowing joss is the ex. No idea why Harry or Joss should have a say in that, though. They (especially Joss) offended him, not the other way around. It's just an unfortunate situation and no fault of Kate's. Though she's a grown woman but still manages to fall in love with any guy she meets. Kate's hits. How are she and Karen not BFFs?
  20. April & Mark were heading for a breakup before Mama came to stay. April isn't the brightest but I still think she could do better. Mark is sweet but he's too unfocused. Not a good example for Lucy. Whatever happened to the little boy - Lucy's brother? He never comes to visit? Isn't that where Mark came from? Joss needs help. She & Harry have clearly drifted and I find her character to be inconsistent. Did she start her PR firm while she was in jail? I wasn't aware Karen had any exes for the duration of the show. Just a patient, his son, the guys she slept with anonymously, and a married couple, one of whom was her doctor. I was surprised to hear she had an ex lol. Didn't realize her former colleague who reported her was an ex lol. What a nut.
  21. I took it to mean that was the kind of apartment she could get with her budget. Who cares, anyway? She needs to just go away. At least Calista had real drama. This is purely manufactured. Yes! Go away, Kate.
  22. Catching up in a couple of episodes on demand. I thought this one was good. I'm interested in the subplots here. For example, Brenda's crew, Camila trying to get her business back on track, epifanio destroying Camila's business, James and his partner, the sick woman that Teresa is taking care of, Teresa getting papers. Lots of good stuff. I do have a few nits, though. How is Teresa able to maintain contact with Brenda? Don't they check her phone? Doesn't she ever get followed? Also, what are your thoughts on the Language choice? Do you think it would be better if the show was mostly in Spanish with subtitles? I've never heard James speak Spanish. Does he?
  23. Agreed, the language choice is weird. I feel like we are supposed to imagine that they were speaking Spanish and the writers threw in actual Spanish to give it a certain feel (authenticity, maybe?). I wonder how subtitles would work with a regular TV show. I've never seen that done before. Is this something that shows are doing now?
