House Hunters Renovation - General Discussion
laredhead replied to MsChicklet's topic in House Hunters Renovation
I just watched the Australia to Italy episode and it was pretty obvious to me who was the boss in that relationship. Even his demeanor seemed to be submissive when she was around, which was 90% of the time. He just sort of scurried around and took orders from her, or so it seemed to me. You're right Buttersister, he must like taking orders. I didn't notice that she had mellowed that much after the wedding because she was still complaining at the party on the terrace. I guess in a small village it was difficult to meet eligible women and when he met her, he thought she was nice. Wonder what his parents thought of their future, and now present, daughter-in-law's bossy attitude? I didn't think the kitchen was all that special either, and I didn't like the location of the sink tucked back into the corner. There wasn't much counter space, but I'm comparing that to many American kitchens and you know how picky we Americans are about huge kitchens. I also wasn't too impressed with her DIY mosaic tile project, and did it really take two people to grout that small table? Agree that the terrace was probably the best part of that renovation, even though there wasn't a view of mountains or the sea. -

Stewedsquash, U-verse is my cable/internet company and they have their own on-line guide. I was just suggesting that you might want to look at a printed TV Guide before subscribing to see what it looks like these days. It's not the TV Guide of 30 years ago where everything was listed from early morning to late night. -
Tiny Houses Ad Nauseam (Except Tiny House Nation)

The woman firefighter said she had thought of buying an RV, but wanted something "more permanent" - HUH? Being on wheels doesn't make it permanent in my world. Basically, this woman could have bought a tow-behind Airstream or a 5th wheel and gotten the same result with more space. Sounded to me like she was ditching her 5 bedroom house to camp out for a year or so. I think her 6'5" boyfriend probably wasn't going to last very long in any of the tiny abodes she looked at. -

Before you subscribe to the print TV Guide you should know they only list prime time scheduled shows; no day time TV. I use it plus my U-verse on-line 24/7 schedule plus the print edition of TV Guide to insure I don't miss new episodes of shows I like, but that isn't fool proof either. -

I'm going to confess my ignorance by asking what/where is the genre subset? I'll post there, but need to know how to find it. -

Yes, BearCat, it was an Adrian Leeds episode. The finished apartment was very nice. Lime green was the color choice for walls and some of the furnishings. -

Don't know if I'm supposed to use this forum to post a comment about HH's Tiny Houses series that has been airing on HGTV this past week, but here goes. The woman last night was looking for a tiny house on wheels. Said she had though of buying an RV, but wanted something "more permanent" - HUH? Being on wheels doesn't make it permanent in my world. Basically, this woman could have bought a tow behind Airstream or a 5th wheel and gotten the same result with more space. Sounded to me like she was ditching her 5 bedroom house to camp out for a year or so. I think her 6'5" boyfriend probably wasn't going to last very long in any of the tiny abodes she looked at. -
Set the DVR to record last night's HH Pop'd, but the episode was not what was advertised and it was not a "pop'd" one. I have wondered if HGTV advises the participants that they would be airing their episode as "pop'd" at a later date and what the participants thought of that. While some of us snark a bit at some of the HH's, that's a bit different than the network doing it.

I thought the pear orchard owners are the only ones so far to embrace and carry out the small house living concept in a way that makes sense. The floor plan of the house is workable for 2 people and the house is about the same size as 1 bedroom apartment in many places. I really liked the style of the house and after tossing a lot of things I have stashed in closets and that I will never use again, I could see myself living in that house. I would never try to cram a family of 6 in it though, just myself and maybe one other person. I'm still not over the family of 6 trying to live in a 600 sq foot house because the wife thought it was fun to drive across the country in a mini-van as one big happy family. I really, really want that family to be feature on a future Where Are They Now episode.

Property Brothers - General Discussion

The parents probably appreciate having a separate guest house to get away from the noise in the main house game room. I wonder if they over improved this house in comparison to the rest of the neighborhood. -
Yes, wonder how the yurt is holding up with all of the rain in California right now. It's probably OK with the weather they usually have, but it doesn't look very substantial for permanent housing over a long period of time.

A composting toilet isn't for everyone. On one of the Alaskan house hunting shows, a realtor once told some prospective buyers that there are odors associated with a composting toilet and that good ventilation is necessary where one is located, especially if it is indoors. Yep, similar to a litter box.

Agree about the Hampstead Heath couple. She didn't whine the entire time about having to give up her job and how much better things were in Ohio. As mentioned by others though, her voice was like fingernails on a chalkboard. -

BearCat, yes she seemed to reserve most of her snark for the first apartment and as they say first impressions are hard to forget. I'm not sure if she was complimenting or dissing the flocked wallpaper. She certainly did not know the correct term for it since she called it fuzzy. Her reaction to the other decor in that 2nd apartment was less than complimentary though. . -

Izabella, the Serbian episode did not mention heating, but a couple of the shots showed an old stove. I'm sure there was no central heating or any other type of heat other than the wood stoves that heated individual rooms. Pre-renovation that house was probably very drafty and cold. -

Just saw the couple who renovated a house in Serbia. Wow, that was a big undertaking. I vaguely remember the episode of them searching for a place in Budapest and will try to locate it in the HH archives. I love the yard/garden of the house they renovated and the long room with all of the doors and windows overlooking the garden. For little investment, they certainly did end up with a lovely house. -
DownTheShore, I agree that her idea of a spa bath and my idea of one (and yours too) don't match. The blue was not a very pretty color, IMO, but perhaps it looks better in person. The color scheme and decor left me cold, and would probably seem colder in the winter when the place is surrounded by snow. I guess she's been busy having babies and with child care since they now have a second child. Did not say if she was still working.

HH Where Are They Now tonight featured the Wisconsin couple there has been a lot of discussion about previously. He wanted 10 acres in the middle of no where and no neighbors and she wanted to be close to their jobs in town. He won and over the past year several posts have mentioned the episode and how odd it seemed at the time. Tonight they showed all of the improvements they have made and she seemed to be very happy living out in the country on their 10 acres of land. The follow up episode had a totally different vibe than the first one. Another couple featured was the Bentonville, Arkansas husband & wife who generated a lot of discussion when their initial episode was aired. Guess what? He was wearing red shorts in part of the follow up episode. During the original show, he wore red pants. They both admitted they had no idea what they were getting into when they decided to buy the fixer.

House Hunters International - General Discussion

Just watched the Texas to Aberdeen, Scotland episode, and oh my that wife was a whiner. Everything was better and bigger in Texas. It was all about her, as is usually the case when the wives have to give up their jobs to accompany their husbands to a foreign country. i almost lost it when she was feeling the flocked wallpaper and calling it "trippy". When she said it was fuzzy, the realtor corrected her and said it was flocked, which might not be in style now, but it was a rental property for goodness sake. I was embarrassed for the realtor. She certainly got an earful of how living in Texas was so much better than living in Scotland. I doubt that the husband will be working there permanently. When you rent a furnished place, the chances are very high that the furniture is not going to be your style. The last straw was her snide response to the husband's offer to help her in the kitchen and she said he could help by leaving the very small kitchen. Well, while they might have needed more counter space, putting that small island into that space did not expand it now did it? -
Auntjess, my DVR has it scheduled for the week of December 15 at 9:00 (central time) - every night that week. I have not seen Tiny House Nation, and the listing doesn't elaborate on the content. You may be able to find it on the HGTV website, but I haven't looked for it.

Thank you for the information about the Alaska questions regarding energy prices and housing, AKraven. I love the shows Buying Alaska and Living Alaska. The episode last night feature a couple who owns a bagel store and has been living in a "dry" cabin for 10 years in order to save enough money to buy a house with running water and indoor plumbing. I'm not that much of adventurer, but it seems many people are willing to live that way in order to live in Alaska and enjoy the beauty of that state.
