Spring Baking Championship - General Discussion
laredhead replied to Aethera's topic in Spring Baking Championship
After reading all of the comments about last week's show, I erased it from my DVR w/o watching. I've never done that. I'm so disgusted with the direction the network chose to take this season, that I'm not sure I will tune in tonight for it. Without revealing what was posted in the "spoiler" earlier, it sounds like something a child would invent. Ugh! -
Hedgehog2022, they might level out, but they need to drop to a more realistic level, like closer to a normal appreciation. This is panic buying. Some appraisers in my area are refusing to appraise houses at those hugely inflated prices. Buyers in many cases are having to make up the difference in the appraised value (on which is what the mortgage company basis its loan), and the selling price. In a few years when those buyers try to sell, they are probably going to be in for a shock when they can't get $900,000 for a house that is really worth only $600,000. The pigeons will come home to roost.

A good friend who is a long time realtor, said that she can barely keep up with the pricing on houses now, and people who are "frantic" to buy a house. At a sales meeting last week, the speaker, a mortgage loan officer, said the motto from realtors to buyers seems to be "if you sleep on it tonight, you won't sleep in it tomorrow". I have bought several houses in my lifetime, but never have seen a market like this in my city. I could sell my house for a very nice profit tomorrow, but where would I go? I'd have to buy something more expensive, or downsize into something that cost the same. Nope. I'm staying here until I go to the "home" - be it the old folks home or the funeral home, lol.

HH is so overdue for some episodes of HH Where Are They Now. They could run 2 years of episodes without ever repeating any.

I am curious as to how much the monthly utilities will be on the large Temecula house will be, and how much the home owners insurance will be, especially with the pool. A lot more than what they were paying in an apartment I'm sure.

House Hunters International - General Discussion

You don't have to travel to central America for part of that. Come to south Louisiana where I live. We have good A/C, screens, but we do have lots, and lots of insects. I agree, and do wonder about the demand for yoga spas in places like that. -

Thank you Cetacean for the site to contact FN. I have poked around trying to find a way to email them, but had no success. I think they probably don't want to be contacted. I just sent my comments to them. -

I was sorry to see Carolyn eliminated, and whoever thought fig was a good choice for any contestant should have chosen something else. Fig?? It's time for Tom to go. His decorating skills aren't good, and evidently from some of the comments about decoration on this episode that should have really dinged him on the baseballs. I really want one (or more) of the contestants to tell Molly to go away, sit down, and shut up. I remember an episode that Clinton was hosting, and one of the bakers he was talking to was experiencing a stressful moment. Clinton immediately stopped talking to him, and politely walked away. Not Molly! She's going to continue to talk to you like an overindulged child would, and it's distracting. These people are trying to win big $$, and it will change their life. Please put an adult in charge of the room next season, not a kindergartner.- 3.2k replies

The Julia Child Challenge - General Discussion
laredhead replied to Yeah No's topic in The Julia Child Challenge
Elena's souffle didn't rise as high as it might have if she had not opened the oven while it was cooking. She should have paid more attention to the sign that Julia put on her oven door that said Do Not Open. I was surprised at how many appliances the contestants were unfamiliar with, and did not know how to use. A food processor? I've had one of those since they first became popular, and yes, it qualifies as vintage. It's on the counter along with a Kitchen Aid mixer, and a blender. I use all of those things when I cook. I was given an Instant Pot as a gift, but have never used it. I agree with previous posts that the final scene at the table with all of the contestants is the best part of the episodes. I would love to try the liver mousse recipe that Dustin made. -
I watched the New Orleans episode last night. Takes me a few days to catch up, and I love reading the comments beforehand so I know what to look for when watching 🙂. I noticed a lot of blue tarps still on roofs from the damage caused by Hurricane Ida back in September. I don't know when this episode was filmed, but you can't go by the clothes HH's wear in these episodes because we can be wearing shorts & flip flops one day, and sweaters the next day here in south Lousiana. I wonder about their house in Arabi too, and whether it sustained damage from the F3 tornado on Tuesday. Her angst about storms is real. They said they won't stay to ride out another storm in the future which makes a lot of sense. The house they bought in Violet is a few miles south of Arabi and even closer to a storm wind field and storm surge. I'm a life long resident of south Louisiana & live in Baton Rouge. I used to love a good thunderstorm. Not anymore after living through a few tropical storms, Hurricanes Katrina & Gustav where we had no power for 14 days, and most recently Ida when we experienced hurricane winds briefly, and again no power for several days. Whole house generators are becoming a hot item here. Having said all of that, the house they chose will be very rentable for someone who must live in that area due to their work, or someone who loves to fish and enjoys that area of the state. I wonder how much their flood insurance costs? I liked the new paint color on the front of the house.

The Redfin site still has all of the pictures and information posted of the Ipswich house. I haven't seen the episode yet, but the comments here made me want to look at the pictures. The width of the floor boards is amazing. We will never see lumber like that again. Absolutely gorgeous wood. Interesting house.

House Hunters International - General Discussion

I watched the France B&B episode last night. The countryside looked beautiful, and would be a place I would love to visit. Running a B&B sounds like it would be one of the last things on my list of things to do for a living. The only way I would ever consider it, it to be able to live in a separate building, hire a cook, and hire a couple of house keepers. I would also need to have reliable repair people on call for the inevitable toilet overflow, kitchen drain emergency, roof leak, etc. especially in a rural area like that. I'm not anti-social, but I don't want to live in a house with strangers, and have to cook and clean up after them. I have no idea how much free time an owner would have, because other than not renting it out for specified times, you would be on call all the time. I wonder how successful they have been. Has anyone been able to find their B&B location and information? -

Correct - they are not dessert. At my house they are breakfast, or a snack in mid-afternoon. I live within a mile or so of Coffee Call in Baton Rouge, and it's very easy to stop by and get an order of beignets and a cup of cafe au lait to go with them. Eating them there hot out of the fryer is heaven on a plate. -

South Louisiana girl chiming in here, and saying that beignets must be eaten hot when they are just out of the fryer, and showered with lots of powdered sugar. No filling, no other topping, no flavoring - just beautifully fried simple dough. I hated that as the added ingredients to the float cakes. There is no way a beignet that's been sitting around for an hour or two is going to taste good, no matter how good it was when freshly made. As for Molly, I had no idea who she was before her hosting this show. She can go back to the farm and stay there as far as I'm concerned. I prefer Jessie, or any of the other hosts over her. The show should be about the bakers and the judges not the host.- 3.2k replies

Showing my age because I knew all of the answers in the space/NASA/whatever category from first hand knowledge of having been a teenager during those years. I knew all except the name of the moon crater area where a landing took place. Is it my imagination, or are more of the contestants talking and laughing with each other during the game as well as adding little things at the end of their answers? Maybe Ken's hosting style has encouraged that. He seems to interact more with them. I'm fine with what seems like a more relaxed mood. Maybe I'm not remembering lighter moments when Alex was the host.

I wanted to remind Clay of the old adage - when you find yourself in a hole, stop digging. He didn't seem to be paying attention to the subject of some of the categories. For someone who tutors students trying to pass the SAT and other tests, he seemed to lack some basic knowledge. I was most flabbergasted at his Wyoming answer. I didn't understand Margaret's wager for FJ, other than she was emotionally and mentally tired of playing Jeopardy. Maybe she figured go big or go home, and she ended up going home. I liked her, and I think Ken liked her too. He seemed to enjoy bantering with her, and went out of his way to make her feel comfortable.

Spring Baking Championship - General Discussion

I wish the contestants all wore aprons with their names on them like they do on the Canadian baking show. When there are so many in the first few shows it's hard to remember their names. Yes, Alexis was definitely the one to be eliminated on the first show. It would be nice to see something she baked under perfect circumstances. As for Molly, waaay too much perkiness and constant smiling for my taste. I've never seen her show, and doubt that I ever will now that I've seen her on this show.- 3.2k replies

I found this article about Seasons 3 & 4, and thought it would be of interest here. https://www.indiewire.com/2022/02/all-creatures-great-and-small-season-2-ending-christmas-episode-1234700569/

I loved this Christmas episode. A little bit of everything for most fans of the show. I liked Tristan sitting unnoticed in the corner of the kitchen while Mrs. Hall and the clock man were talking after the party. So, when was Siegfried going to Diana's for a nightcap? After the party on Christmas Eve, or Christmas night? I like Diana's character. I hope she continues to appear in the series. Loved Siegfried and Mrs. Pumphrey's piano duet, and the wonderful Christmas carol. I also learned a new term to refer to a tightwad - "tighter than an otter's backside" - LOL. I don't mind the drawn out underlying story line about the approaching war, because it reflects the true years long buildup to WW2 in Europe, and the fears of the citizens who could remember WW 1 and the destruction and deaths from that war. I think I'll rewatch this one tonight.

Remember the song The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald? The ship was sailing from a city near Duluth when she sank in Lake Superior. For some reason that fact has stuck in my brain for years, but I can't remember the name of a song 5 years ago - lol. I much prefer Ken as the host, and hope that they choose him.

I thought maybe she was looking at herself on a monitor, because one time she straightened her hair as she was looking in that direction. It was distracting, and I wondered if anyone else noticed.

I finally watched the Atlanta rural vs. city episode, and yes many times over to everyone who said the wife is weird. If I were her husband I'd buy a house in Atlanta, and send her to live with her mother where she said was perfect in her opinion. How can you want a rural setting with views of the mountains and not realize it will probably come with a lot of land, or at least more than a postage stamp of a yard that can be cut with a weed trimmer? Her parting statement that her husband wants children, but she's still on the fence should give him fair warning that if he thought buying a house with her was a difficult event, wait till they have that serious discussion. The realtor had the patience of Job with that woman. The house they bought is nice, and maybe the husband enjoys the long drive twice a week to have some quiet time by himself.

Pj3422, maybe she's not a football fan, and doesn't want to be there for game weekends. I agree with CrazyInAlabama that she will have a rental company manage it for her, and it will be a short term rental property. She can control which weekends (or days) she wants to occupy it herself that way. I didn't like any of the houses, but $200,000 doesn't buy what it used to.

Thanks to a previous poster, I found the Great Canadian Baking Show on You Tube and have enjoyed watching it. The hosts are very nice, and don't try to turn their every appearance into a comedy routine. The judges are great too.
