  1. That Carvana ad made no sense. They paid $7 million for that?!! I don't scan QR codes for anything I don't recognize. Yet, here's another $7 million spent trying to get us to do it. Anyone brave enough?
  2. Cleveland is collectively shaking its head. Guess the problem was Baker and not OBJ...
  3. I know nothing about curling rules or strategy, yet find myself watching and trying to figure it out. I'm sure there's a strategy for when, how fast, what direction, etc. the sweepers employ, but also that escapes me. But the question I do have is - how do they avoid touching their rock? Or avoid accidentally touching the opponent's rock with their feet or broom? What happens in that instance? Edited to add: Oh my gosh, it just happened during the USA-China match being show (on tape delay?) on USA network. A US player touched the China rock with his broom. He admitted immediately that it touched it. It's like golf apparently, it's a gentleman's game and you are honest. Even though to me it didn't seem like it moved at all. And I guess China can decide for themselves what they want to do with it. So China decided to leave the rock, even though they could have taken it out of play because of the inadvertent touch, because they knew that the touch was unintentional and that it wouldn't have affected the throw.
  4. I believe there are judges. Intentional contact is an automatic disqualification. Casual contact that just seems unavoidable is deemed just to be part of the race. I also seem to remember hearing that you couldn't block an opponent who is trying to pass, which I always thought seemed silly because isn't that the point? If there is a disqualification, I don't know what happens to the racer that was interfered with. In the final, what would happen? I don't imagine they would rerun the race.
  5. To be fair, I don't think she was annoyed at the length of the interview - it's not like they were talking for ten minutes. the interviewer asked a question, she responded, but then kept talking and started to ramble. And that's when she jokingly said she was just going to stop talking. Probably realized her thoughts were a little circuitous. They showed most of the racers until I believe it was the top of the hour. In studio announcer said that they predicted Lara Gut to win the gold as the few remaining racers weren't likely to challenge given who they were. But that if anything of course changed, they would update and cut back.
  6. I don't think maggot cheese would have bothered me much. Seemed like some of the racers would shove it in their mouth, I would conveniently let some fall to the ground as I think I saw some crumbs do for some of the racers. We didn't see anyone vomit, would there have been a penalty? I think the worse was the famous challenge eating some Argentinian meat feast - intestines, kidney, udder, blood sausage - that Rob Mariano masterfully convinced all of them to take the penalty for.
  7. I believe the only figure skater to carry the flag was Scott Hamilton in 1980, and that was for opening ceremony because they didn't have flag bearers for the closing ceremony. Certainly one of the stars of these games and has lived up to expectation. I'd love for it to be Shaun White, but he's likely not going to stick around for another 7+ days after his competition has ended. I can recall Dan Jansen in 1994 - I think the first time they had flag bearers at the Closing ceremony. What a great story his Olympic career was. Cammi Granato in 1998. Jessie Diggins last in 2018. I don't think the flag bearer has ever been anyone from the glamour events such as alpine, figure skating, or snowboarding. Those guys get so much attention and media anyway, it's nice to see a relative unknown like a Jessie Diggins get the honor. A redemption story would be Lindsay Jacobellis, who has gotten so little attention this last time around but obviously would be a fitting cap to her Olympic career. But again, she probably won't stick around.
  8. I don't believe for a second that just because she's 15, she doesn't know what she was taking. But that's obviously going to be the explanation. It shouldn't matter who gave it to you. If you compete as an adult against other adults - which is essentially what these teenagers are doing - then you abide by the same rules. Which means knowing what goes into your body and making sure it's not a banned substance.
  9. Wow, what an emotional farewell interview from Shaun White. Amazing that at 35, he's still competitive with these young pipsqueaks that can defy gravity and fly out of the pipe. He left it all on the pipe today. Yeah, it wasn't the storybook finish that we all hoped for him. But he said he was satisfied. What a great career. Inspired so many here in America and the world to pick up a snowboard. This sport owes this legend everything.
  10. Mikaela sounds like she's in a much better head space during the post race interview. Great perspective. I thought they said she wouldn't be doing any more press but I'm happy she decided to. Very happy for my Olympics GF Lara Gut-Behrami in getting her first Olympic gold!
  11. Anyone else distracted by Raquel's low cut top and her massive cleavage? I would have liked to see how Ryan and Dusty righted their boat and got back in. We saw it overturned ominously as they cut to commercial. Then when they came back, they were both in. Hard to overturn the boat, get enough water out, and climb back in without getting more water in. The memory task was hard because as others have said, you had to look on both sides and the water seemed hazy. And I agree that it would have been easier to do 1+2, 3+4, 5+6 etc from the start. Why didn't they think of that? Natalia correctly forebode that it would obviously be the two teams duking it out at the end to not finish last since they were working together. For both of the pairs of teams that worked together, I would have let the other team go first, because if they were wrong, then you would have a chance to pick something else. I couldn't tell if the flight attendants and Penn agreed on which card to show, or if they did it on their own. And when I think the pink twits got it wrong, why didn't Natalia and Arun choose a different one? Or did they? Will need to rewatch. Watched the net sewing task several times and I still don't understand it or how it worked. Such a joke that Natalia and Arun get saved again. "We are better than this." Uh, four(?) times now would say that you aren't.
  12. I haven't been paying too much attention to the puff pieces. (As an aside, I don't think Mary Carillo is covering these games?). The only one I saw a bit of was Shaun White sitting pensively staring at a large tv showing his Japanese rival. Or maybe it was just a teaser. I think the reason why Jacobellis hasn't gotten any hype is because this was now her fourth shot at redemption. Ho hum. But the bigger reason is that nobody cares about snowboard cross. Which I always find interesting. The halfpipe is always the glamour event, yet it's something that very few people when they strap on the board can do or relate to. The majority of us riding the lift to the top of the mountain just want to get down, and it's a thrill to go fast. So we should more relate to snowboard cross. Yet nobody cares. Collectively everybody is just enthralled with all these twists and tricks that we don't know how to do, don't understand the difference between all of them, and can only really know that something was good if the rider lands on his/her feet. I don't know when the snowboard slalom event is supposed to happen. I remember the event only because last Olympics there was the American that was competing for Russia because he got more support there. Why isn't there a Snowboard downhill? I'd love to watch something like that.
  13. I seem to be much happier with NBC coverage this go around as opposed to the Summer Olympics. Or maybe my level of interest isn't as high which is odd for me because I've always preferred the Winter games. To me, it seems like there's more live events but maybe because I'm watching later in the evening. And I'm noticing more the "Live" in the upper right corner. I think Winter Olympics isn't as frenetic because there's less events in general so less going on at the same time. I feel like I've only seen events on NBC, USA, and maybe occasionally CNBC? I think NBC has cut it down to these three channels and are pushing people to sign up for Peacock. If you don't pay for Peacock ($4.99 a month), I think there's only limited things you can watch there? I haven't looked this time around. Of course you can also go to nbcolympics.com, but is this only accessible as well if you have Peacock? Apparently Kornacki was a hit during the coverage of the election, so they got this great idea to bring him out at last summer's Olympics. "And now, we turn to our own Steve Kornacki who will ANALYZE the medal count..." Ah yeah, we can see the tabulation. US has no golds. ROC is on top. Do I really need you to blather on and on like we're hanging on to every breath to see what might transpire? It's one thing when election results are coming in by the hour and he can analyze what remaining counties haven't turned in votes, what the demographic is of that said county, how they voted last election, etc. I don't need him to tell me that the US was counting on two medals from Mikaela and that maybe she could still medal in Combined but it's not her strongest suit. Give me a break.
  14. I'm a little confused by the Eileen Gu story as well too. She said she is skiing for China because she wants to inspire young girls in China to take up skiing. There was some comment about how she was excited to learn that 300 million Chinese have taken up ski sports, and she seemed to be sort of claiming responsibility for that. There was some past video of locals watching her do some jumps, so I'm assuming maybe she had some clinics for kids. So does she feel she wouldn't have the same kind of impact here in the US? Probably is right. America is obsessed with alpine and snowboarding, as evidenced by Shiffrin, White, and Chloe Kim. But these aerial sports don't stir up much excitement. And thus likely not much marketing and dollars. I'm assuming she can make bank in China and sounds like she's already got a brand. Watching the men tonight, I'm surprised that there's not much more injuries. Several yard sales at the bottom of the hill tonight. How do they avoid getting hurt? Noticed this as well. Unlike the other displays of sportsmanship in a lot of the other events we saw, she clearly wasn't feeling it and seemed to have missed the memo.
  15. Phew, close call for Shaun White and Chase Josey who both had to lay it down on their second runs. Was holding my breath for Shaun. But this is the Ayumu Hirano show. He looks like he's about 5 feet tall, but he gets so far out of the pipe and so effortlessly. Shaun talked about letting it all hang out in the final, saying you don't want to give away too much too early. But don't these guys all watch each other in practice? So you basically know what everyone is going to throw down? As always with halfpipe and anything trick related, I have no idea how these announcers can recognize all the tricks..."That's a frontside double cork 1440! A Fakie 1080! Backside rodeo! And now his signature Double McTwist 1280!" Or something like that. No idea what any of those are. Noticed that Eileen Gu was waiting at the bottom to say hi to Shaun. Had her helmet and mirrored goggles on so I had no idea who she was until the announcers identified her, and then I noticed her stylish ski jacket appears to be her own design line as it had her name on it. I thought at first it was his girlfriend Nina Dobrev.
  16. To each their own. She's the biggest US star in these games. We celebrate her wins just as much as we console her in her defeats. She's human, just like Simone Biles is/was last summer. To see her sitting on the side, processing what just happened, being comforted...how does the camera bother her? I'm glad that we were able to see it. We've all come up short I'm sure in our own lives when expectations were great, and she is no different. She is a star in the spotlight. She knows that this comes with the territory. And she was really gracious to give an interview. Clearly holding back tears. Voice cracking. Just heartbreaking. I don't think she cares about calling attention to herself. She was numb and in shock at what happened. If her sitting on the sidelines distracted the other racers coming down, the organizers would have told her to move.
  17. Wow, what a tremendous disappointment for Mikaela. Has the pressure gotten to her? I feel for her. Hopefully she can bounce back. Speed events likely not going to be her best chance for a medal. Hoping she can podium in the combined.
  18. No idea how these announcers can tell in real time if it's a 1440 or 1080. It just happens so fast. I'd need slow motion to decipher. No medal for Red. But it was hilarious when they showed his family and there was one looked to be maybe 4 year old completely passed out face down on the woman's lap, oblivious to all of the screaming in the room.
  19. This show has been a MAJOR disappointment. Hey, I liked seeing young Luke and wondering how they did it (obviously CGI or something like they did with Carrier Fisher) and how they got his voice (did Mark Hamill record? Or some voice modulator did it?). But this show is about BOBA FETT. I was expecting a bad a$$ bounty hunter that terrorized the galaxy and was feared by all. Instead, we learn that his number one is a more skilled assassin, that he is protected by a bunch of kids on Vespas, and all he does is sit around having meetings.
  20. Sure, they were busy with their work and doing good for their community. Kudos to them. But they surely saw the trouble they had before the race was suspended. Find 30 minutes in a 24 hour day to walk on the treadmill and commit to getting in better shape. But nobody knew when the race was going to restart. Without a goal and date in mind, it was likely hard for them to be motivated. It could have been 2 months, 12 months, or in this case 19 months. They probably figured they'd get to it next week, or next month. And then 17 months later they get a notice that said the race will resume shortly. Too late then. Contrast that to Dusty and Ryan who walked mountains every day, getting stronger, and staying motivated. Eye on the prize. People might not like the alpha male teams, but there's a reason why they are often more competitive than the others. Preparation is half the battle. And what physically imposing tasks really have there been so far? Akbar and Sheri struggled at basic things. Such as WALKING (Sheri in the city and couldn't keep up.). The mountain trail didn't seem particularly hard as nobody was really struggling. But it was uphill for at least half of it. Both of them struggled with stairs, which I'll give them a pass because everyone did due to how many there were. And then Akbar and the canyoneering which really was just minimal rock scrambling. It's not like these tasks were picking up huge tires and flipping them. None of them required any amount of brute strength. Perhaps after they see themselves on tv, they'll get a treadmill and start walking at an incline of 2%. Not expecting a team of alpha males or ultra fit competitors. This isn't American Ninja Warrior. But a certain level of fitness seems to be required. Going to guess that Akbar is the heaviest competitor easily. Yes, he's big like a power forward or defensive lineman big. But that's it. He's not fit. Guessing he enjoyed his humble pie.
  21. Only fitting that Akbar was the one to get them eliminated. All the griping about his out of shape wife, and guess what? Big 275 pound dude is just as out of shape. We just didn't know it because he didn't do any of the physical roadblocks. Seriously, how out of shape and unfit to race was this couple? Just terrible. He got passed by an old Indian dad who wasn't physically imposing. At least we didn't have to hear him say something about how they were former athletes. I know in their exit interview, he said something about "leaving it all on the court", but that's after they already lost. Kudos to Sheri for being the supportive wife, even though it wasn't reciprocated in earlier legs when she was the one at fault. Dusty and Ryan taking off their life jackets at the mat. Raquel making the comment about how they just wanted to show off their muscles. Both of them making a face to the greeter who gave the thumbs up. Quite a hilarious exchange. Disappointed that the mule task seemed so easy and the mules were so cooperative. After putting the saddle on, it was just a short walk to the same cheese place. Racers heard "mule" and got all scared. Seemed like the mule walking would have only taken a few minutes. Pink twin complaining that Raquel didn't wait for her. Puhleez. It's a RAAACCCEE! Basically finishing first gets you $5000 and then a 15 minute head start. You could crush the leg, finish 3 hours ahead of everyone, and still only get a 15 minute head start. Something is wrong about that.
  22. She said conditions were great. Just was pushing hard and lost an edge. Happy to see my Olympics crush Lara Gut back, although now she's Lara Gut-Behrami. Heart sinks. Happy she got the bronze. HUGE crash right for poor Nina O'Brein. She's was taken off strapped in a sled. Lots of images of worried US racers. They say she's conscious but no update about the injury. Not sure if she's supposed to have other events, but surely her games are over. Happy for Sara Hector, great story with the comeback from a serious knee injury. Love that you can see all the women are genuinely happy for each other. Gut-Behrami gave her a big hug, and the Brignone was all smiles as well. Even though these women are direct competitors, it seems that they are all friends on the tour and celebrate each other's victories. Nice to see that. I'm curious about this venue. I read somewhere that this mountain only gets 8 inches of snow a year. So I'm guessing this must all be artificial snow? And it's only on the ski runs. Was this venue created for these Olympics? Or is this where the locals go to ski? Can't seem to see any chair lifts, so perhaps it's a created venue?
  23. Yeah, probably about 20 years and 50 pounds ago. I wonder how many times he's used that line. No offense to Florida Atlantic University, but it's not like they were players at revered college basketball institutions like Duke, North Carolina, etc. I have plenty of friends that were Division I athletes and they never bring it up in daily conversation. Yeah, but why did they think they couldn't carry 6 bags of chestnuts each? It's not like they weigh anything and I'd be surprised if they had tiny hands. Thought it was interesting that Kim/Penn and Ryan/Dusty roshamboed to determine who got to jump first, but then there was no agreement to wait for the other after the first team was done. Hey, an episode where we didn't hear glasses wearing flight attendant talk about girl power and wanting an all female team to win. Arun is enthusiastic. But he just doesn't have the game to back it up.
  24. My thoughts too. I'm guessing Sheri pushes 200-225, Akbar probably 255-265. So I suppose it still makes a little difference, Wondering as well. Sure, in a foreign country, never leave your personal belongings - especially your PASSPORT! - with strangers. But it seemed like that party at the top of the stairs was self-contained. And there obviously would be TAR crew there to watch your stuff. But maybe there's a general rule that you can't do that and the crew are instructed not to watch your stuff. But I disagree about the guys only taking 3 chestnuts. If Sheri and Akbar can manage to get 12 bags of chestnuts up in one trip, then surely the more competent guys could have done it. I'm surprised nobody forgot the little bottle of wine or chestnut for the gnome. Surely I thought somebody would do so. I think there should have been a penalty for every bottle of wine broken. Have no clue why Sheri of all people would say they should do the stairs. Does she not know that she isn't in the best of shape? Agree. I remember seeing a clip of them all excited to get into a private charter. Was that actually shown on the show, or was that some internet clip I saw? I wish there was more transparency of the changes they made to the show. Obviously this is one of them. So no longer can we have a team so far behind (Joe and Bill, TAR 1?) that it's just impossible for them to catch-up. I feel that they should still maintain the time advantages in order for finish. But since they all have to get on the same plane ultimately, then it seems like that wouldn't work. Can't keep a running tally of how far ahead one team is, that wouldn't make for good tv.
  25. Enjoyed the ending. Watching the original Lost In Space, you knew that they were never going to get home, so every episode was a "I wonder what kind of alien or disaster they'll face this time?". And you knew they would always survive to continue to be lost another week. So not sure how I felt when they actually arrived to the colony. And I didn't read any of the fan articles, so I had no idea that this was indeed the series finale and not just the season finale. I love that they all got a happy ending. Even Smith, whose character was redeemed even as she sits in prison. But with them to the colony, the series pretty much had to end now. After all, it's called Lost In Space. If you're living on a planet and farming, then you're not really lost. Nor in space. It was campy, yes. Somewhat confusing sometimes with all the robot stuff, but maybe I'm just dense. But overall enjoyable. I suppose there is the slight possibility that there would be a spin off, as Will and Robot are exploring new parts of the galaxy. But looking at Will now versus when the series started (just how much did he really grow?), it's just not quite the same. Check this series off the list. Time to move on to all my other things I need to watch.
