  1. Loved Cynthia Nixon in this, but wouldn't it have been hilarious if Amy Ryan had played that role? ETA: What am I thinking? Dianne Weist.
  2. I don't think I have ever cried over this show before, but the shot of Carrie and Astrid holding hands kicked my ass.
  3. I thought the waitress was genuinely trying to be helpful. Maybe in a slightly patronizing "Old folk don't know dating apps" way, but still, I think her heart was in the right place. I think this makes the first occasion I can think of where Noah actually has an attack of remorse. What a wake up call. And good Lord, poor Whitney. Luisa called it, as far as I am concerned. I'm glad she didn't let the"curse" comment pass. I think Noah burned the house to get back at Alison, but I also bet there is a hefty insurance policy involved.
  4. I was OK with the two different versions, because you gotta figure, IRL a conversation like that would have go on for a couple hours, with various peaks a valleys. One moment stood out for Helen, one moment (apparently after much libation) stood out for Noah. it's not like the whole conversation took the 5 minutes or whatever onscreen time we saw. And count me as loving Helen bantering with the "millennials". For some reason got no vibe of snide from the girl who sallied back, I think she was just having fun playing with the drunk lady.
  5. "'Are you coming?" she said, as if he were somehow already inside her." Ye Gods, how did Noah wind up on the short list of anything with crap like that?
  6. Product placement, I'll bet my ass. Just like Skippy for Saul.Doesn't make it any less cliche' d, though.
  7. I have wondered, RedInk! ! It sure would explain her burying Noah in lawyers-- not so much to protect him, but to prevent him from incriminating her.
  8. Noah just sucks. If I see him give that goggle eyed "Who, me?" look again when a woman is expressing perfectly valid anger at him, I may wind up needing to replace my TV. Whitney, on the other hand.. She's growing on me. Well, the character's a little shit, but the actress is killing it. Also, I thought it was cute how her mask sort of slipped when she was attacking Moira Tierney with photos. They kept character, but at the same time, they looked like they were having fun with that scene. To the point that I wondered if it was ad lib.
  9. Gosh, the Lockhart clan is so wonderfully... Yankee. Like H.P. Lovecraft/ Stephen King yankee. Dolores Lockhart. That story could have been carved in a tree with the title "Croatoan"
  10. Yeah, that. Claire Danes can kick any role's ass.
  11. Oh, we're gonna have a Conner family style Drama- giving? Whoopee! Pass the taters!
  12. i'm waiting for her badass to kick in, if the producers allow it. In Spanish speaking roles, at least, she is a dynamic, nuanced, fearless actor. If they relegate her to Cole's Real Doll, they are wasting her. Willing to bet the wedding is of the green card variety. I can see Cole and Luisa making great business partners rather than being soul mates.
  13. I admit it is something I have to push aside when watching the show. IMO that characterization is a stereotype that was circulating post-9/11 of the (largely female) CIA analyst corps. See the doc "Manhunt." That whole rabid focus Carrie had on Abu Nazir and Brody was a cartoonization of the way the female analysts kept bugging people in the CIA to take note of the movements of key Al Queida leaders, and how they were blown off. ("Everybody missed something that day"-- no Saul, a few people didn't, and no one listened to them.) As it turned out, the kind of focused, relentless tracking of individuals the analysts were getting mocked for was exactly what was needed to bring down Bin Laden. Therefore, that said, I see a lot of what I suppose was some writer's idea of making Carrie a rich, flawed character as a (probably unintentional) slap in the face to actual female CIA operatives-- he old "women be crying and shit" motif. Why did that have to be the flaw? While I rant, may I just say that it would be nice to have a few more women scattered around that resemble the women in the analyst corps. They look like women who would organize a PTA cakewalk, on average. Perfectly ordinary, in other words. They could probably sneak around anywhere too, because people would assume they were bringing someone brownies. I dunno, but I found the contrast of the Lutheran potluck look combined with the analytical badass performance quite refreshing in the doc. Maybe just 'cause Im Lutheran.
  14. Noah took advantage of the fact that Alison dissassotiates when yelled at to instigate sex while she was still checked out. While this is probably not covered under the legal definition of rape, it was reluctant sex, and any man who is worthy of the dick he owns would not pursue sex that was obviously so reluctant.Because Alison disassociates, she probably has no idea what to call a moment like that. Given her default, she would probably try to retrace her steps until she could latch onto something that made it her fault.
  15. I don't know who I hate more, Noah or Helen's "this is OUR divorce" parents.
  16. Yeah, I don't think they would take it that far, necessarily. What I was picturing (after re-watching a couple times) was more like this: 1.. Alison dozes off in bed 2. Drunk Cole sees her, and is overcome with drunken sentiment of the non-erotic variety. He climbs in bed to cuddle. 3. Alison wakes up. She is caught off guard She makes some feeble fumfuh comments about how it's all a mistake. Because she is Alison, she is terrified of actually setting a boundary. 4. Cole breaks into wet weepy sobs and confesses how much misses her. He makes a clumsy pass or two. 5. Alison goes "fuck it, if do it maybe he'll be satisfied and go away." Which is pretty much reluctant sex, but which of us hasn't agreed to dumb sex? It sucks, and it's bad, but it's not assault and I can see someone making much more of it than it is. A la Cole.
  17. on reflection I realize I have not touched Cole's encounter with Allison, and that is because I have a bad bad feeling about it, based on his rosy picture of his last run in with her versus her unsettling one. and I agree that just because Allison is a flake we should take his version of things as gospel. At best he was really unwise in turning the invitation to cuddle into sex. At worst...well I have a feeling we are going to get an Allison flashback on this. If you combine the two viewpoints when Cole was waving around the axe last time they met, we have one guy who doesn't know how menacing he is when he is drunk, and one woman who is very bad at executing a firm "get the fuck out of here".
  18. No, two post above this one I said the same thing. :D Allison reframed Yvonne's valid concerns about her performance level as sexual jealousy. (and I agree about how Yvonne reacted to her expectation to help Robert, too. It was a great moment for both actresses-- you could see " wtf, whose PA are you?" on Yvonne's face and " why are you keeping me away from Robert, you jealous witch?" on Allison's.) I think she thinks sex is the only thing she as to get approval/ affection/ whatever . On some level she hates this, but on another this doesn't stop her from using it to get the attention she wants.
  19. My read was that "All of a sudden, Yvonne started picking on everything I do" (read: Yvonne gave Allison a settling in period then grew impatient at the fact that she was still screwing up) and "Aha! She read the book, that explains everything!" (read: this scenario was less painful for Allison to accept than the idea that she just didn't work as a PA.) I think the timing of the firing with Robert's boner was mostly coincidence-- although it might have moved Robert from protesting a change in staff to expediting it. I wouldn't be surprised if Yvonne didn't even know about it. Also, except for the other girl she was waitressing with, all the women in Allison's POV seem to hate her, so I tend to read that as less than it being about Allison's universal threat level and more about the common factor being Allison's POV.
  20. Depends on the woman. Some women who are unsure about their attractiveness will (consciously or unconsciously) send out gambits for attention from men that help them-- temporarily-- feel attractive. Problem is, it is very temporary.
  21. The actress pointed out in an interview that Alison is always schlumpy ( great word) in her POV. This is pretty consistent. Overall I think this means she has an extremely poor self image, and this is why she always seems astonished my male attention in her POV. It also might account for her hit or miss fashion attempts. She doesn't think she is attractive, so she doesn't dress attractive. Or she'll wear something she thinks is just barely acceptable, and everyone else goes doinnng! This ep was interesting. While to Robert's face she blames the firing on his response to her, she also seems to be picking up info about herself. I think the segment shows her becoming aware of how she dresses, how inappropriate her musings with Robert were, how she was really kind of a mess as a PA. I suspect if we saw Yvonne's POV, it would show a lot more PA messiness than Alison's did, but enough was there to assume she was becoming aware of it. ( and can I just brag that I saw the Cole thing coming? Check the speculation thread. And I totally think the kid is his-- or at least he thinks she is his. )
  22. I know this is a longshot, but I am wondering if this season's affair will be an affair between Alison and Cole?
  23. I'm gonna go on record predicting that Carrie will eventually sleep with During. Wanna know why I think Carrie will sleep with During? Because Claire Danes is the producer of the show. God, that guy radiates sexy.
  24. Northern Californiana here, but there are a lot of cities built on hills all over the state. The proximity made sense to me.First of all, I am assuming that it is a hill we are looking at, not necessarily part of a mountain range. Second, the house we are looking at, while appearing to be an ornate Mediterranean style mansion (and no doubt costs as much as one would) is probably more a modest sized two-three bedroom house in a upper-middle neighborhood. I am going by the apparent size of the living room window. Looking out my window, I see houses of that general apparent size that are less than a quarter of a mile away. Having said that, dips in the horizon between the viewer and the hill can make things look a little closer than they are.
  25. .Snap. I was thinking about this ep on the way to work today, and I was imagining the kind of descent into slime that every news item comments section would slide into... And course we would all be here, hiding in our bunkers on our iPads and bitching about how tasteless Jimmy Fallon was being...
