I think the show is unfolding like a plot-driven feature, so the killer would be referenced in Act 1 (for an eight-episode miniseries, Act 1 would be the first two eps). We don't have to meet the killer in person; we can just know that he/she exists in the story (e.g. the victim could mention something related to someone specific; Naz, Box or Stone could notice a clue related to someone specific, etc.). I expect something big will happen near the end of episode four. Naz was definitely shocked and panicked by the murder, but I'm starting to wonder if he could be the subtle beast. Maybe he's shocked about his ability to commit such a heinous crime? I'm intrigued that the "stunned bunny" could actually be the killer, but I hope that's not the case.

At this point, I don't think he even knows if he is guilty or not. There is a pocket of time he doesn't remember. Unless, like you said, he is hiding it and mind fucking us all. It just seems so outside his nature as we have seen it. Maybe that is the twist in it all. Just to clarify, I think Price and Zaillian are doing a great job of hiding his guilt, not the character. At this point, I don't think Naz is intentionally hiding anything. That would be a cheap and unbelievable plot twist if it turns out he's been faking his amnesia. His odd reaction to the photos could make sense if he's the killer, like he could be stunned at seeing the aftermath of his anger. I had the same thoughts. A sexual relationship wouldn't surprise me but I hope the show has a stronger twist.

I saw TRF and found it forgettable, so much so that I don't recall the plotline and didn't recognize Ahmed in Nightcrawler, but he's strong here and I'll look forward to seeing what he does next. Amen. I hope he stops taking other clients so he can get moving on the research. I thought his discovery about Box's involvement was going to light a fire under his ass. Less giddiness about "being in the right place at the right time" and more elbow grease, please.

I initially wanted to binge-watch this show but it may be too depressing, especially if a lot of it will be about Naz surviving in prison. The few lighter moments got me through -- that one guy's reaction to Naz's charges, and the "Jamie Foxx is no Denzel" thing. Too funny. Paul Sparks keeps turning up in all my fave shows. His lack of questioning about his stepdaughter's last moments is very suspicious. I was so glad when Naz stopped speaking English during his parents' visit and I'm hoping his intelligence outshines his naivety more and more with each ep. If he's guilty, the show is hiding it really well.

Can the Duffer brothers be innovative just once? Will the hook be more than a Poltergeist retread? I'm losing interest. And that all-black, liquid-floor inner world was ripped off from Under the Skin. *sigh*

Lots of ET moments in this ep. Eleven's one-word answers seem like a plot device -- there's no reason why she can't provide more answers sooner. Meanwhile, Ryder's one-note performance is getting old fast. And why does the sister's romance get so much screen time?

S01.E01: Chapter One: The Vanishing Of Will Byers
numbnut replied to Tara Ariano's topic in Stranger Things
Outside of aping Spielberg movies and other 80s films? Nope. I'm bummed that they killed off McCleary, er, Benny so fast. He was the only character I was invested in. The boys are super annoying, especially when they're yammering all at once. I like David Harbour so I'll keep watching despite the tsunami of cliches. -

This show is like a sedative. The storytelling always make me nod off, especially during Eliot's droning voiceover. I'm also not invested because the lead is robotic (understandably). I perk up for Wellick's storyline and I was engaged by last season's kidnapping episode, but I mainly enjoy all the style flourishes and ripoffs. Aside from the usual (Kubrick and Fincher), there was some Coppola (noted in the above article) and Schlesinger (the Marathon Man music for the DC meeting). -
Yup, all the snafus will def. bite the prosecutors in the ass. The desk sergeant shrugging off the broken chain of evidence seemed unrealistic to me. He's not some inexperienced rookie. I would buy it if he was slightly annoyed like the CSI dudes.

Either that or something bad just happened before she got in the cab. Actually both scenarios can be the case.

I bingewatched Marcella. Anna Friel killed it. My guess is someone else (still just based on casting).

JT is great but JG would have been awesome. I can imagine his take on the dialogue, his large silhouette on the street before he decides to help Naz, etc. Oh well.

I think his characters are perfect for TV. I wouldn't trek out to a theater to see a wannabe Almost Famous with characters that lack originality in almost every way.

One of the witnesses (not sure of his name on this show, but Bodie from The Wire) lied about being alone when he saw Naz with the victim. He had a friend with him. I'm not sure if that's all that meaningful, though; I think his instinct would be to keep his friend out of it since he's weary of the police and it was implied they had drugs on them/weren't in that neighborhood for pure reasons. Could be a red herring. I've never seen The Wire (I don't like Dominic West or Wendell Pierce but will get to it eventually) and I dismissed the lie because I figured it was insignificant (the guy just wants to avoid a hassle) but that lingering closeup of Bodie's eyeballing def. means something. She was also into the pain so there's that. Nas had minimal blood on his body and clothes. That was a Mr. Goodbar-level bloodbath. Whoever did it must be splattered.

Wait, what? Who lied? It sux that we have to wait till July 17 for the second ep.

This ep was better; not so choppy. (I'm guessing that the pilot was originally a two-hour movie before they hacked it up.) The new guy (and future boyfriend) looks just like the dead boyfriend. Is it the same actor? And does Texas not have patrol cops? Driving like a maniac would alert cops pretty quick in L.A. or NYC. I'm confused about the mule issue -- why would the new chemist be blamed for a problem with the balloons? Why can't the use they same balloon manufacturer they've always used? Teresa's BFF is awfully clueless for a drug runner's wife. Why would she keep her phone? Mark Consuelos did a good job a smarmy guy.

Interesting, I thought he broke open the window to unlock the door. I watched on HBOGO and it was very dark, not as dark when I watched "on demand" though. OK, that makes sense. I now recall him cutting his hand when he unlocked it. Thanks! I have a feeling too but it's just based on casting. Is it me or was that female cop going out of her way to be a hardass? That was weird especially since she's the one who wanted to end her shift so badly. It didn't seem like she had a gut feeling about Nas. She just got lucky.

I watched the first ep of the original series and didn't finish it. I like Ben Whishaw but the storytelling was rushed and the production values were like a bad Lifetime movie. The HBO pilot is shot like a Fincher film. I'm praying that the entire series is just as awesome. The only thing that bugged me was the door to the girl's brownstone -- Nas had to break in to get his keys but the door was unlocked when the cops arrived. Also, why did they keep showing the stuffed deer head? Is there a security cam behind the eyes? I think he developed the production from the start so he still gets credit.

I'm losing interest and am totally confused about who is related to whom. I also don't get why the guys think they're incapable of scouting jobs without Smurf.
-
WOW. The first ep was awesome! I knew it would be good if Richard Price and Steve Zaillian are involved but this was riveting, like watching a train crash in slow motion. I kept yelling "No!" but the kid wouldn't listen. LOL. The lead actor (name?) is basically the playing the same character he did in Nightcrawler but he's still impressive. Can't wait for more!
-
WTF? Why did they cram enough content for six episodes into the pilot? That was choppy as hell and the romance arc was ridiculously short. They killed off the boyfriend before we got to see his expertise as a drug runner or his stealing, and it would have been nice to see the incident-gone-wrong at the airport. I didn't mind the music but that on-the-nose, predictable dialogue was the worst. I love Alice Braga so I'll watch one more ep. Hopefully the writing gets better.
-
Well, that was an assortment of recycled and predictable moments. I'll try one more ep but Crowe def. needs a new bag of tricks.

S03.E08: Perpetual Night / S03.E09: The Blessed Dark
numbnut replied to Tara Ariano's topic in Penny Dreadful [V]
Well, that was depressing. And all those monologues/speeches. Criminy Pete. I got a few laughs when Dracula's night creatures showed up like breakdancers in a Janet Jackson video, but WTF? So many disappointments. Why did Eva Green get so little screen time? I'm surprised Lily didn't burn Dorian's painting as payback, and I'm still confused as hell with the whole Dracula End of Days thing. So Vanessa lets Dracula bite her because she wants to wait for Ethan to kill her? Ugh. Whatever. -
S01.E01: Pilot / S01.E02: We Don't Hurt People
numbnut replied to formerlyfreedom's topic in Animal Kingdom
The second ep is a choppy mess. I'm not rooting for anyone really. The kid is sympathetic but has the charisma of driftwood. Why was Pope standing naked in the yard? Was that the desired effect of his spiked dinner? (Hatosy was cute back in the day. What happened?) Since they won't kill off one of the brothers right after the pilot, the reveal of a Mexican girlfriend doesn't create much of a cliffhanger. -
Vanessa NOOOOO! She couldn't wait a few more days for Ethan? Dracula is neither scary nor sexy. I'm still scratching my head over the casting. So Lily lost a daughter? She didn't seem broken up about it when she was dating Ethan. And why is Dorian suddenly put off? Didn't he initially approve the killing spree? How can he be bored if he hasn't yet led an army of killer whores? I was hoping that Lily's protege (name?) would slash Dorian just so he could shock everyone by healing.
