I never got the feeling of Hawkins as a rust belt town.  Its more like typical small town rural southern Indiana.

Also there is a "naval base" in southern Indiana around Boomington, Crane naval base.  I think I just subconsciously made that association with Indiana and where it was located. Though I don't think beyond it being near enough to Chicago for El to travel there, which is pretty much all of Indiana, they have ever really specified WHERE Hawkins would be in Indiana.

Northwest Indiana around Gary and somewhat South Bend is more the rust belt type of Indiana city, but that part of the state looks much different than what we see in Hawkins.  I suppose it could be more around the Lafayette area but rural, but I have the image of Hawkins as being more hilly whereas as that part of the state is pretty flat.  I don't know if that is my own projection though or if that is how they have actually portrayed the city.

In the end not terribly important, its fictional small town Indiana.......somewhere.

When they talked about going to "the city" in the first season I made that Gary in my mind. They could also be close-ish to Lafayette / Purdue to keep the lab supplied with engineers. Sure that area is way more flat than Hawkins, but everything else about the town is pretty spot on for me (I grew up in rural southern Michigan).

I want to see Chi Chi at this stage in her career, with some fame and success.

I'm really excited for that, too.

I love Trixie and I agree that she'll probably be set up for the win, but honestly nobody in this group is on the level of Chad or Alaska in my mind. The only one I could see rising to that level from recent years is maybe Courtney.

I wanted to KILL the cafe-porn-John-nerds every time they were onscreen, and the waitress who appeared not to know/care what they were doing made it even worse. I wanted so badly for that one guy to fall victim to grisly murder. Overall, this season pushed it too far with the misogyny tropes.

The gross guys in the cafe trading reviews of hookers actually mirrors a prostitution ring that was just busted in Seattle, so while revolting it was sadly realistic.

I finished the sixth episode on Tuesday and sat down last night to watch the "final" episode only to find out that was it! There were so many dumb loose ends I thought there was another one for sure there was another one. I agree with everyone that a lot of the basic ideas were interesting (physical exploitation of poor women, mentally fragile teen girl manipulated by old slimeball), but the plotholes were just too big to overlook. I think all of the actresses did a good job with what they had (even minor characters like the madame), but the male characters were such flat stereotypes I usually just wanted them off my screen so we could get back to the women.

The thing with Steve rings a bell, but that leaves me confused about the timeline--specifically, how much time went by between the events at the end of Season 1 and those at the beginning of Season 2. I'll have to re-read the episode summaries from Season 1.

    I think it's about 4 years later.

  5. I have absolutely no idea how building a dam and casino is supposed to be the solution for anything. Each would be a multi-year project on its own, and none of these people could so much as get a liquor license much less approval for a casino.

What did surprise me is that I wound up feeling much more invested in the Langmore kids than in the main characters.  I felt both sympathy and worry for them in a way I didn't for the Byrde kids. The actress playing Ruth did an excellent job - I assumed she would be a manipulative conniver from start to finish, but her softening once people started showing her a bit of decency seemed authentic to me.

I completely agree. I think the actors do a much better job than the Bryde kids overall.

  6. I thought the crazy timelines were annoying and unnecessarily confusing for the sake of being "artistic." Also I don't think the agent adds much to the show as far as the story or an interesting character, so while I thought his backstory was compelling on its own I didn't really need it.

Marty and Wendy are such great characters I would have preferred more time on their backstories, and maybe a hint of why Marty's partners thought they could pull one over on the cartel, or even more about the cartel boss and his wife.

  7. I'm binging and up to this episode now, and the biggest nit (literally!) for me for the whole series is how they hang out outside at night when they would be swarmed by mosquitoes!

Other than that I'm enjoying the show. Although does anyone know how the woman's death affects the money Marty took?

wow, they always look better on award night. Are there professionals doing the queens' hair & makeup & wardrobe for these events?

I think so. Rember Raja saying she helped Shangela for the reunion on her original season?

  9. Perhaps the church is a hotbed for abusers, but sadly kids are abused by all kinds of people in many different situations. Growing up there was a huge scandal locally to me about a leader in a Baptist church who abused kids in the congregation. It wasn't national news because it was one person in one church. But when you can group abusers by an easily-defined organization like the Catholic church (or as @OtterMommy mentioned the Boy Scouts) it looks like a pattern. When you add in that the organization protects the offenders, in this case going right up to one of the most powerful men in the world, it's even more egregious.

  10. This reunion was amazing. Easily better than the whole season. I always like seeing the queens look so polished since they have all the time and help they need, too. EXCEPT for Aja, who still looked like hammered shit. I don't get it. I know she's young and probably doesn't have the money some of the others do, but she just looks messy.

Also knowing the spoiler from the finale

    Spoiler

and the fact that this took place the day after, it makes sense to me that Trinity and Shea were so outspoken. They had nothing to lose and were likely a bit salty.

  11. The past few seasons I've gotten really bored at the end of the season, to the point where I often don't watch the actual finale. I think part of it is that the winner is usually not a surprise, the "characters" are gone, and there's a lot of filler. But I've been binging Unghh episodes, and it's made me realize that winning the crown itself has so little to do with success after the show. Sure a couple of the winners have been great, but look at Trixie. She's got a legit music career and she's super popular, but was very lackluster on the show. And now Valentina is getting invited to fashion shows where she's dressed by the designer beforehand. It just feels anticlimactic.

  12. I feel like they never made it clear exactly what happened. I forgot who said it fairly early in the series that Cathy and Russell sort of requested living outside of the convent and working at a public school, but I honestly doubt that. I imagine they did make waves about Maskell, and the move was a compromise their superiors came up with. I'm sure the school wouldn't just let a well-liked, energetic teacher waltz off to the public sector.

  13. I feel like the only reason they spent so much time on Koob as a suspect is because that's who the police had been pushing right after the murder, so to not go into it at all would have looked biased on the filmmakers' parts.

I think Arnold called it when he said that if she broke up with her fiancé and moves to a whole new country and started a relationship with Dev, it would put WAY too much pressure on the relationship, and their month together was all romantic and dreamy, but in real life, it might not continue that way.

I was confused by him calling it so accurately and truthfully because he had been so enthusiastic about helping Dev hook up with her. Where was that insight when it started happening?

  15. The Dev/Francesca relationship was my least favorite part of the season, too, and I think that comes down to two reasons. 1) I'm not single, so I can't relate to relationship angst, especially modern, app-fueled, intercontinental relationship angst. 2) I think Aziz doesn't do so well with dramatic material. It was well written but I think he personally just can't sell it as an actor. And I do think the actress playing Francesca did a good job, so that made it even odder.

I really liked the Chef Jeff storyline. It's probably something a young, ambitious celebrity like Aziz actually worries about--agreeing to work with a peer you respect only to find out they're an asshole, then you're tied to them (*cough*Kanye*cough*).

Good point - are they going to do what they've done for quite a few of the seasons and have Ru do that 'some of the judges think I've made some errors in who I've sent home' shtick and bring back Valentina?

I've thought about that but it might be too late at this point maybe? Although I guess Carmen was brought back pretty late in the season.
