  1. That's a good question. Unless I'm forgetting someone, the last person to pass on while still an active part of a show was Johnny Olson in 1985 for The Price Is Right. Bob Barker mentioned that they would continue showing episodes that were taped with John before he died. After he passed away they had his episodes run on CBS for a month and a half prior to his death. 25 years later in 2010, when Charlie O'Donnell died, the first Wheel of Forture episode that aired did not have Charlie announcing. That might have been coincidental as I don't know or recall if they held any episodes until later in 2010-2011 as a tribute. Could be a situation that O'Donnell was too ill to continue and it just happened that his final episode aired the last day before his passing. I guess we'll find out soon; syndicated episodes usually taped more in advance of their airdate whereas network shows aren't as long
  2. Overall, Alex Trebek will be remembered for his leadership and success on Jeopardy, but many people may not be aware of Trebek's gameshow resume outside of Jeopardy! Other gameshows in my lifetime I grew up with include Double Dare, High Rollers, Classic Concentration, and To Tell The Truth. Definitely a fairly longtime Goodson-Todson employee. He hosted on all three networks that have been Networks for at least 50 years (CBS in the 1970s, NBC in the 1980s - 1990s, and the ABC primetime specials for Jeopardy in 1990 and this past year). Knew him as a rather serious emcee, but Alex had a sense of humor. I'll never forget he love for TTTT because he said that he finally got to sit down while hosting a game show. "Any man's death diminishes me." - John Donne. Rest in peace, Mr. Alex Trebek.

Speaking of which, I'll be interested to see how the ratings play out tonight with the Cowboys & Steelers! IIRC, the ratings started to go in a positive direction, as in upward four years ago. I don't expect it to be a record-breaker, but maybe within the top 5-10. Same with NFC Brady vs NFC Brees Part II. Maybe it was intentional all around, and maybe it was not, but this period somewhat emulates the first weekend after the election 4 years ago. After Election Day in 2016, a 2010s ACC powerhouse fell to an average ACC team at home, PITT pulled the upset against Clemson, Dave Chappelle hosted SNL, a classic NFL matchup featuring the Pittsburgh Steelers and Dallas Cowboys took place, and that was followed by Sunday Night Football featuring a Team (New England) led by Tom Brady hosting a former 2010s Superbowl Championship team (Seattle) led by a future Hall of Famer (Russell). Clemson is still an ACC powerhouse despite losing to Pittsburgh at home. This year, a 2010s ACC powerhouse fell to an average ACC team at home, Notre Dame pulled the upset against Clemson, Dave Chappelle hosted SNL, a classic NFL matchup featuring the Pittsburgh Steelers and Dallas Cowboys took place, and that was followed by Sunday Night Football featuring a Team (Tampa) led by Tom Brady hosting a former 2010s Superbowl Championship team (New Orleans) led by a future Hall of Famer (Drew). Florida State isn't an ACC powerhouse right now (though they're close in hoops), but they still lost at home to Pittsburgh. Just a coincidence for the above. Not to bring politics in the conversation, but I think while the rating have been good, they should improve again this cycle. A lot of people were stressed over the period, especially this year. A lot of ease, IMO now that we're in this spot on the calendar. I noticed that in 2016. Maybe it just played out that way, but the weekend of November 12-13 in '16 was rather full of relief. At least for me; ditto this weekend. Great games today; I guess I'll pick Washington, Tennessee, Minnesota, Kansas City, Houston, Indianapolis, Buffalo, Atlanta, Las Vegas, Arizona, Tampa Bay, & New England for the win. That means their opponents will win, sorry about that!
  4. Can you imagine if a student tests positive though?! Not surprising but that could bring down the entire team. Which I wouldn't bet on it. It's Notre Dame, not Bowling Green or something
  5. Man there are going to be a lot of pissed off people tomorrow when they find out their SNL DVR was ruined by Notre Dame & Clemson!
  6. Charissa Thompson (for now). That sucks that someone has to quarantine because someone else caught it. I totally understand and respect the precaution, but man, I guess people have to limit their outings if that's the case. For this cast, they don't have a choice, but outside of that, that's brutal

Agreed. I made a similar comment at the MLB thread. It similar to what happened in 1988 but in reverse. It didn't factor in the winning NFL & NHL teams. LA completed the NBA & MLB sweep in 1988 after the best Hockey player won another championship; this year might have the best Football player win another championship, following the 2020 NBA/MLB LA championship sweep. At Raymond James Stadium, no less. Still can't believe that the Steelers are the last undefeated team remaining. Tennessee is a great team, and Seattle losing the way they did added to that. Really assumed that Baltimore would deny them of that honor, which they have done in some way, shape, or form in the past 20 years
  10. I think it's a smart move from Dabo. Rather than have a week (especially next week) full of speculation related to Lawrence's availability, saying so now eliminates that. Maybe Trevor will get better, but I don't think there's enough time for him to get relevant reps prior to the game at South Bend. Not a great idea having him go in without any practice. The best coaches never have any of their players participate without practice, no matter the reason. That includes Swinney

I wouldn't have a problem if Cora returned to Boston. Some people might, but his absence from 2020 was enough of a punishment, IMO. Would I have been okay if it were more? Possibly. However, I don't think Alex should be banned for life. Therefore, if he returns to the Red Sox, I'd be okay with it

Would the Reinsdorf/LaRussa combo hit the record of the oldest owner/manager duo in Major League Baseball history, or just the oldest owner/team runner duo in sports history? Personally, I would have to flip a coin if I had to choose between the two Chicago teams

While things might resemble the old-normal by the third quarter of 2021, it's people like Turner who'll push that back. As long as that is the case, all the celebrations will be under the new normal until 2022. Either way, it's still drive-thru and virtual during the first half of 2021, as of today. I'll never put this all on Justin. However, I'm still curious as to how it is that he tested positive on the last day but no one else did. I might defend what I said earlier or just agree with everyone that's ripping him to hell. I have to see the whole story. Though we might not ever get the actual story even after it's released. Maybe it has been released; I haven't seen it, mainly due to other stuff that I've been avoiding recently and really I should've done so long ago. It's people like Justin Turner that makes it difficult to argue that "as adults" we should be making our own decisions as it relates to how to behave during a pandemic. Instead some decisions are out of our hands. A couple things. Maybe the team could've said, "Get the fuck away from me!" during their celebration. However, MLB needs to do better. If a test was inconclusive, you hold Turner out, period. Inconclusive does not equal negative. Of course, this is the group that was more focused on punishing everyone outside of Houston for "retaliation" while allowing a team with a losing record to proceed as planned to where they were one win away from another World Series trip. That, and holding CBA talks during the pandemic. I get where Justin Turner is coming from, but man, he has to be better. MLB punishing him for his pathetic decision would be fair enough but hypocritical. The Dodgers could sue MLB if they wanted to for allowing a positive player around them; they might have a case

I'm afraid so, xaxat. I was used to it moreso in the spring than now. Fortunately, the NFL is happening to where they nearly covered all of the days of the week. And with the Big 10's return, I don't think it'll be a big deal. IMO, the NHL and NBA, especially the NBA, aren't as relevant in the fall. So unless you're a glorified gambler, you won't miss too much until hockey and hoops return sometime before football ends

This isn't going to come off as popular, and I apologize in advance to to that, but I didn't have a problem with Justin Turner postgame. I understand how serious the pandemic is, but I can't blame Justin Turner. I think it definitely would have been best to stay away and not return, but being isolated won't undo the fact that he exposed everyone. Sure you don't want to make it worse, but the damage had been done. Maybe TPTB should've done a better job to prevent it. I guess I'm callous for "siding" with Turner. No way you pass up a celebration that might not happen for you again. I don't know what precautions he took; if he violated it, then shame on him, but if he didn't, that's not fair. IMO it's unfair to take him out midgame. If it's disclosed after the fact, then that's that. If it's disclosed before the game and he's pulled before Game 6, as sad as it is, I can respect that. I'm a little forgiving for Justin because he made it through without any setbacks, and with no setbacks throughout the majors in two months. I don't blame everyone that's mad at Turner, but MLB can go to hell for allowing this to happen. Again, I don't know how he became positive or if he was at fault. I should hold judgement until all of the facts are released. Or not. I'd probably be saying something different if he's at fault, but if he isn't, then enough is enough. The people in charge screwed up and needed to do a better job to prevent any setbacks. As mentioned, it's probably a story that will vanish as if it never happened by this time next week. Unless there's an LA outbreak, in which case, it'll resurface during spring training

I can't say I would have bet on it, but I don't care how great LA's hitting has been. There's no excuse for pulling Snell when he did. Blake was dealing, and had previously given up one hit while taking down the top players, twice. It's an elimination game for Tampa; it was the same thing with Charlie Morton in Game 7 of the ALCS. In time we'll move on from this & Kevin Cash will be forgiven. After all he has less to work with compared to the Dodgers. I'll just never get on board with his decision, especially given who the Rays had for relief. I think he should've had more trust in Snell. I think having him pitch a complete game shutout is a little silly, and premature. But with a low pitch count and dominance it led to the wrong result. At the end of the day, it isn't Blake Snell or Kevin Cash's fault that Tampa hardly scored; I do have to give credit for L.A. for keeping them off the scoreboard for the most part (or completely after the Top of the 1st inning)

It's also painful. It's a shame because Major League Baseball completed the season. Despite the mess from earlier in the year, they got it together to the point where there weren't any positive tests. I'm baffled as to how Turner caught it and what went wrong. I actually feel bad for both parties involved. Although there was a chance at one more game (which would have been a massive disaster with this positive) the season ended and everyone was ready to return to their families. Now to have to go through the protocols when their off-season should be starting

AimingforYoko, Kevin Cash did this earlier in the postseason. I actually was livid earlier for it; really I think I spent way too much time complaining about it. I think you keep Snell in given the lack of run support and the lack of anyone good enough to bagel the Dodgers and force a Game 7. Though if it was Game 7, despite the rotation, I would've pulled Snell for Morton. Seriously, Kevin got lucky earlier and may have had an excuse (or not). This is the nonsense that MJ was pissed off about (well somewhat similar). I can't speak for anyone, but I'll respect analytics if your team wins the game, period. The future is not promised, and therefore you take the risks and play your best players and your best game. That's what crowns people, that's what creates legends, not analytics!

I actually thought that Kershaw and Mookie would cross each other off, which may have helped Seager. I think Corey received enough MVP votes to where it didn't matter what Clayton and Betts received voting-wise Losers be damned, Snell Cash should have gotten it!

What we really need is for the Bucs to win the Super Bowl and the circle of sports & titles would be complete. Two for Tampa, and two for Los Angeles. BTW, similar to 1988 we have the Lakers/Dodgers double in terms of championships. Prior to that we had the best player ever in the NHL add to his list of accomplishments with a title and championship MVP. So I guess it would be fitting if the reverse happened and the best player ever in the NFL added to his list of accomplishments with a title and championship MVP, following the LA Double

Not so fast. Snell exited early again, and L.A. took the lead. Great stuff by Blake, but as mentioned elsewhere it would've been nice had there been run support
  23. Well, I know Justin Fields did. 😁 Speaking of Justin Fields, it'll be interesting to see how he's do as it relates to the Heisman. People are saying Trevor Lawrence lost it, but I might have to disagree. The guy is playing closer to a full season than Fields is

Man, Los Angeles was down to their last strike. I thought it would end on a 2-run homer, and when it didn't I thought it was going to go into extras. This was a bad and forth game, in my opinion. Probably the best game of the series, and definitely better than Game 3. Whatever happens, we have a series, no one is blowing a 3-1 lead, and for those that might want to watch Sunday Night Football or if you want to get some sleep for the start of the workweek, then you can. There will be a game on Tuesday
