For all the griping about cameos, there were two small moments in these past couple of episodes that serve as a reminder that Empire hasn't lost its touch in getting the smaller, more intimate details right.
The first came when Jamal lamented to his Dad that running Empire was taking a toll on his music and creative process, to which Lucious sadly looked at his son and answered him, as one musician to another, with a quietly empathetic, "Yeah."
The second came in this episode when Andre, unconsciously, referred to his mother by her first name instead of Mom; a trait which his brothers also resort to when they're frustrated with her, to which she instinctively, and tearfully, recoiled as if she'd just been slapped.
And those kind of subtle, character driven moments prove that Empire hasn't lost sight of what made it a success IMO.
