  1. I've  never worked with hops, but I wonder if blanching them would remove/reduce the bitterness. I always do that with broccoli rabe, before using it in a dish.

Between Kristen “hopping” into the quickfire challenge and faking everyone out with the start, I’d say she’s knocking it outta the park.

I laughed hard as the chefs came rushing toward them. Kristen pushed Joe F. out of the way and said, "Run!"

  2. From Politico:

McDaniel spoke yesterday with Bryan Freedman, renowned lawyer to the estranged cable-news stars, to discuss legal options even beyond recouping the dollar value of her contract.

While no arrangement is final, the person close to McDaniel said, Freedman would be an obvious choice: He represented Megyn Kelly in her own acrimonious parting with NBC, as well as ousted anchors Chris Cuomo, Don Lemon and Tucker Carlson in disputes with their respective former networks.

McDaniel, the person said, is exploring potential defamation and hostile work environment torts after MSNBC’s top talent — momentarily her colleagues — took turns Monday blasting her on air.

NBC had better hope they structured her contract well - seems like the best case scenario for them is being on the hook for a certain amount of her salary, worst case is she sues them for wrongful termination and wins plenty of damages.

One of the articles I was reading mentioned that McDaniel has retained counsel.

  5. There's another little side story to go with NBC News letting her go: CAA, who represented her in the deal, also dropped her.

    https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/politics-news/nbc-news-ronna-mcdaniel-contributor-1235860170/

“After listening to the legitimate concerns of many of you, I have decided that Ronna McDaniel will not be an NBC News contributor,” NBC News Group chairman Cesar Conde wrote in a memo to staff Tuesday afternoon. “No organization, particularly a newsroom, can succeed unless it is cohesive and aligned. Over the last few days, it has become clear that this appointment undermines that goal.”

    ...

Separately, McDaniel has been dropped by CAA, the agency that repped her in the deal with the network, sources confirm to The Hollywood Reporter.

Fox News (!) and others are saying Ronna is out

I've been anticipating that. I don't see how NBC News could continue with her after last night's MSNBC excoriation.

  7. Well, THAT was quite a half hour! TRMS

Edited to add: Don't touch that dial! Lawrence O'Donnell has yet to speak.

  8. Here's a video of Ohtani's prepared comments. You can't call this a press conference as no questions were taken. (Skip ahead to 10:35. That's when Ohtani sits down.)

  9. Sam Blum of The Athletic is live tweeting the Ohtani press conference here. The only other way to get it is on MLB Network.

  10. I'll bet TRMS gets big ratings tonight. Lots of people will tune in to hear Rachel's thoughts on the McDaniel hiring. I hope she gets through those comments quickly and then lays out an important story, as only she can, while all those extra eyes are watching.

As an aside, over on Comedy Central, Monday also means that Jon Stewart hosts The Daily Show tonight at 11 ET.

It was very surprising to see Chuck criticize the network so directly. It will be interesting to see if Joe Scarborough was consulted on hiring Ronna McDaniel. Joe considers himself to be the highest-ranking former Republican official at MSNBC.

On this morning's broadcast, Scarborough claims he learned about the hiring when reading it in the press on Friday and was not asked his opinion on the hiring prior to it. Mika said that McDaniel will not be appearing as a guest on Morning Joe.

It will be interesting to hear the comments of all the hosts as the day progresses, plus it's Monday, so it's a Rachel Maddow day.

Oh jeeze. I guess I am just not able to remember who is who/names to faces/contestants backstories  for this episode yet! @ProudMary @caitmcg

I don’t have a problem with the soup winner competing, like I said in my post. I was confused on how it worked competing in different versions. I couldn’t remember his name so called him French guy for competing there.

The soup winner is not the French guy. Let me help you out a little:

Here is the French guy, Kévin D'Andrea.

Here is the cheftestant that won for his yummy-looking soup, Manny Barella.

  13. Thanks @Bastet for pointing me in the direction of this fun and informative side series.

I love both of the Stephanies, so it was delightful to see them here. It's great to discover that Stephanie Cmar is part of the Top Chef production team! I enjoyed learning about the set-up for "beauties."

In the Ep. 1 thread, many were saying that they didn't miss Padma. I always enjoyed Padma and I've always enjoyed Kristen in her many Top Chef appearances, but the one thing about Padma that I did miss in Ep. 1 was her fashion style. I always wanted to see what Padma was wearing. When Kristen showed up in the Top Chef kitchen to meet the cheftestants, in what, to me, looked like jogging pants, I was crestfallen. 😞 (I'm sure someone here will know the designer and that the pants probably cost a few thousand dollars, but I was not impressed!) All this is to say that I'm feeling much better after watching this, because I loved Kristen's "pantsuit"(?) I'm not sure what else you'd call pants and a matching sleeveless crop top, but it worked! Beautiful blue print, well-fitted. I hope she continues to bring a little fashion to the show, as Padma did on a regular basis.

Good first episode! I'll definitely watch this throughout the season.

Edited to add: I'm looking forward to seeing Amar Santana on the next episode. He's always been a favorite of mine!

One more confusion and then I am done. French guy. How is it that he has done the French version and now the American version? I get that last year was international contestants. But for the countries that have their own version can others compete? If French guy lives in France could he have gone to Brazil this year to compete there? Or does he live in the US now and that’s why he can compete in the US version this year? Dual citizenship? Could Kwame decide to go to France and compete in the French version? I don’t have a problem with it I just don’t recall it happening before.

He is the chef/owner of a restaurant in Austin, TX, so he now lives in the US. When he competed in Top Chef France, he was living and working in France.

I have no problem with him competing here this season.

  15. After what happened on MTP this morning, somebody's probably getting fired! Whether it's Ronna McDaniel or Chuck Todd remains to be seen. I did not have agreeing with Chuck Todd on this week's bingo card.

  16. Cool topic. I never realized this thread existed.

I only own two complete sets of DVDs.

The West Wing, which seems to be a popular choice here. I purchased the seasons individually as they were being released.

Ally McBeal, which doesn't seem to have shown up on anyone else's lists. 😢 I have the boxed set of all five seasons of this Emmy-winning, David E. Kelly created gem.

Guess inviting the POTUS as guest would be? What too political?

Well, it wasn't MTP, but Jonathan Capehart did a one-on-one with President Biden just after the SOTU.
