I always hover to see what site is being linked.  It's mostly only an issue in the celebrity news threads; if the article is from a tabloid or a "news" organization that specializes in misinformation, I'm not going to click on it, I will go look the person being discussed up to find an article from another source.

I do the exact same thing, not just here but everywhere. If I think something is a questionable source, I do a search for the same info from I source I trust.

BTW, I removed the spoiler tags from my original post upthread.

He knew it had been written, he said “It’s the paper I wrote with Mei Tung.”  I’m guessing it was a class paper that ended up being submitted for publication.  Not sure why he did not know that it had been submitted.

I'd really like to know where that young woman, who tutored Sheldon Cooper, went to grad school! I wonder if their paths ever crossed again.

I hate the thought that I won't be seeing Wendie Malick anywhere anymore as she's been popping up in shows I watch for over 30 years now.

I don't know if you have access to AppleTV+ or not, but Wendie Malick is a recurring character on Shrinking, which I highly recommend. She plays a doctor who is Harrison Ford's love interest.

I haven’t seen threads here for Connections, Wordle, Strands, etc. but I don’t see why someone couldn’t start them here:

The Wordle thread is actually in the "Games" forum. The other is the "Fun n Games" forum, where Primetimer members are actually playing different games with each other. 🤪

I'm thinking of starting a "Connections" thread in the Games forum, but even the Wordle thread doesn't generate much traffic, so it might not be worth it.

I felt comfortable with bringing it up here, specifically because of the reason you spoiler tagged!

BTW, there aren't any Primetimer threads specifically for Wordle, etc. are there?

I searched and it turns out that Wordle does have its own Primetimer thread.

And this👆 is an example of the rare situation in which it's appropriate to link the word "here" instead of the a title or words identifying the link.

Has this been an issue in other Primetimer forums? I suppose people might have concerns about clicking on an unknown link. Here in the Jeopardy! forum, many of us "know" each other by user name and have a certain level of online trust, but I guess I wouldn't blindly click on a "here" link if I didn't recognize the forum member. Whenever I rename a link, I usually make note of the source above the renamed link, for example, "From Deadline."

Maybe more about this tomorrow when we don't have to spoiler tag.

    Yes. That's a good idea.

  5. Today's purple grouping in the NYT  "Connections" game has me 🤬.

Hairy and Harry are not homophones!

I did get all four categories without an error, but only because the blue, yellow and green groupings came to me easily, leaving only the final four, which included the aberration.

Airplane walls, yeah . . .  Could you imagine falling through and then hurtling down 30,000 feet, maybe into the middle of the ocean?  Shudder!  Though being weightless he might actually float down, but still . . .  That really is a potentially serious issue when you think about it.

^^I really hope the writers don't go there.

Except for take-off and landing, the flight attendants' seats would likely be available for Pete. At those times, he'd have to find something to hold on to anyway, as seat belts won't do anything for him.

I'm sure that Pete was trying to stay close to Jay, but of course he'd want to talk to other ghosts who recognized that he was a ghost too. He's too nice not to stop and chat. Poor Pete just got distracted. 😞

I don't think a challenge on Top Chef should require the regular viewer to watch a niche show on a streamer to understand the assigned challenge.

    It didn't.

The Bear was being mentioned because people didn't know who Chef /Restauranteur Matty Matheson was and among his other accomplishments, he happens to be a cast member on the show. While a chaos menu was discussed on The Bear, it's certainly not a prerequisite for this episode of Top Chef.

Also, although it may not be to your taste, it's far from a niche show.

Every episode my husband and I notice something a bit off; this time it was that they didn’t introduce the two extra judges at the elimination challenge. Now there are times when they are cooking for a big table and don’t introduce everyone but this was a small group.

Yes, that was a head-scratcher. When they have a large number of people and they don't specifically introduce them, they usually have a chyron with the person's name and who they are professionally.

So we have yet another unnecessary Quickfire round that means nothing to the overall competition.

It certainly meant something to Michelle, who won $7,500!

I still enjoy the Quickfire Challenges, even though immunity is handled in a different way now. Also, it was a dairy challenge, which means something to Wisconsin and its dairy farmers.

  10. Did someone sprinkle negativity dust all over this thread? And directed at so much: contestants, judges, guest judges, Wisconsin, the season! My goodness.

    Is everyone OK?

Well deserved nomination. Even better, of course, would be a win!!

    https://deadline.com/2024/04/2024-peabody-awards-nominations-list-1235892057/

The show won a Peabody in 2022. I was of the evidently incorrect impression, that the Peabody was a one-and-done. This additional nomination for the final season is a very pleasant surprise!

Here's the info on their original win in '22 from THR:

Ok, Amy drives me a bit crazy. Way too slow picking categories. Her affect is weird. (So not like most doctors I know.) I was hoping the guy in the middle would win.

I agree with you about Amy. FOUR clues left on the board! She has to speed it up.

Tyler, the guy in the middle, was fine until he pulled a "Bring it!" That's my new instant disqualifier. The producers need to tell the contestants to knock it off.

On the other hand, the producers must have stopped telling contestants to read the full category name every single time. I noticed it was starting to fall by the wayside in the later tournaments. Now, it seems as if regular contestants are not reading the full category names after the first call either. I hope that means the producers have decided to let that go.

  13. New, from Reuters:

McKinsey faces US criminal probe over opioids work, sources say

McKinsey & Co is under criminal investigation in the United States over allegations that the consulting firm played a key role in fueling the opioid epidemic, with federal prosecutors homing in on its work advising OxyContin maker Purdue Pharma and other drugmakers, three people familiar with the matter said.

    ...

The Justice Department is also investigating whether McKinsey conspired to commit healthcare fraud when its consulting work for companies selling opioids allegedly resulted in fraudulent claims being made to government programs such as Medicare, they said.

Prosecutors are also looking at whether McKinsey obstructed justice, an inquiry related to McKinsey's disclosure that it had fired two partners who communicated about deleting documents related to their opioids work, the people said.

    ...

It carries higher stakes than other government investigations McKinsey has resolved because of the potential for criminal charges against the company or executives, and steep financial penalties that the Justice Department often demands in exchange for resolving its white-collar probes.

  14. Airdate: Wednesday, April 24, 2024

    Synopsis:

    A

Last Chance Kitchen surprise changes the game. Milk Bar's Christina Tosi joins Kristen for a sweet Quickfire that requires the chefs to create a dairy-forward dessert. The chefs must serve a dish that exemplifies chaos cuisine.

  15. @ebk57 Nice find! I had searched a little but wasn't able to find an in-depth take, only short mentions.

    Thank you!

For all you Yankee fans (and subscribers to The Athletic since I can't figure out how to share this - sorry):

Bernie Williams will play with the NY Philharmonic this week

I am thrilled for Bernie, who is far and away my all-time favorite Yankee. What an honor for a great musician! I only wish I could read the full article. 😪 Perhaps the YES Network will give this some coverage that will show up on their YouTube channel. 🤞

I hadn't heard about this, so thanks for sharing!

I have seen it suggested in other forums that having a ringer come barnstorming out of LCK seems like a reference to Kristen and would obviously be even moreso should he win. I hope that TC would not resort to such an obvious attempt at a planned narrative but given the overall mediocrity of this James Beard-nominee heavy crowd, it's hard to shake.  It would be one way to make sure the first post-Padma season clearly has put Padma in the rearview mirror by making it so much about Kristen and her history.

My main issue with any online speculation about this being some type of homage to Kristen's Top Chef  journey is that Kristen was not a producer-created ringer! She won her season legitimately. She just happened to do it by returning fron LCK and being the first person to do that. I have no problem with a chef coming back from LCK to win. That's organic; but this whole idea that Soo is "Contestant #16" only his competition began in LCK is absolute BS, in my opinion. I'm fine with the other changes in the "we're going to shake things up" department, but this doesn't sit well at all. Also, this bad look was compounded by the whole "What happened to David the Hat Guy and why isn't he competing in LCK?" situation. It all just smells funny.

I like Soo and he certainly seems to be a chef that will be a contender for the title. He seems stronger than at least half of the remaining chefs in the main competition, but if he goes on to win, I think it will always seem as if there needs to be an asterisk after his name.

  19. IMO, the only acceptable answer is Harley Quinn as the clue was specifically looking for the character.

There's something of a Harley Quinn renaissance that's been happening over the past few years.

Harley is currently being played in the DC Cinematic Universe by Margot Robbie, who's terrific in the role. She has appeared as Harley Quinn in three DC films, Suicide Squad (great supporting performance in a disappointing movie), Birds of Prey, where Harley Quinn is the main character leading a group of kick-ass women DC characters, and The Suicide Squad, a completely different and very funny film directed by James Gunn.

The character is also currently being brilliantly voice-acted by Kaley Cuoco in the animated Harley Quinn television series streaming on MAX. It's absolutely hilarious and definitely NOT for children!

And that ends this nerd-hosted session of Comics 101.
