I also am over her opening performance of head shaking and disbelief when she is introduced daily.

This. One time was believable and acceptable. Now, it's phony humility. Also, she's doing Sam's "Bring it" each time the last clue is hers. Stop it!

I don't dislike her. There are many contestants who bug me more, but she's not on my favorites list.

    Just my opinion.

They're not handling these budget issues very well, as presented -- it's like whichever chef happened to put their ingredients up last has to completely change course instead of everyone having to take some things off the bill.

    Not cool.

Oh good. I'm feeling better about Michelle's cook.

    I love W. Kamau Bell.

Me, too! That was a nice surprise.

I hope we're being misled, but I'm afraid Michelle is getting the loser's edit.

I remember back in the olden days (last Saturday) when baseball was fun.  I miss those days.

Feeling a bit better now? 😉

Right now I'm seeing a nice dinner...pasta, salad*, and garlic knots.

I thought of you this evening. I had lovely fresh-made (purchased; I didn't make the pasta myself) ravioli for dinner. I was extra careful when bringing the plates from the kitchen to the table, remembering your ravioli disaster from last week!

And now back to Billy Joel at Madison Square Garden. He's still got it.

I was looking for a place on the forums where we could talk about it while it's airing, but there doesn't seem to be a place for it anymore.

Yes, Billy's still got it! I honestly can't get over the range he still has at 75!

  9. Does Angel Hernandez have some compromising info on senior MLB executives? There must be some reason this guy still has a job! (Click for the full graphic.)

  10. This extended piece from Slate does a very good job laying out the whole Ohtani debacle.

It Was Not Just Shohei Ohtani’s Translator Who Failed Him The baseball superstar was a victim in more ways than one.

A small clip from the article. The entire piece is worth the read.

The feds say that Mizuhara took not just a million bucks from Ohtani, but $16 million. Not that there’s an especially ethical way to steal $16 million, but the Justice Department accuses Mizuhara of plotting it in a sinister fashion. According to the indictment, Mizuhara impersonated Ohtani and authorized transfers from the player’s account over the phone, as well as diverted notifications and security alerts to his own phone and email address. Mizuhara was in a unique position to gain that access: He was not only Ohtani’s close friend but also his interpreter, the intermediary between the Japanese-speaking Ohtani and his English-speaking bank and financial advisers.

Ohtani believed that his financial team was effectively monitoring his assets. But that became difficult given the translator’s perch as the one guy in the story speaking two languages. According to the federal complaint, Mizuhara shielded details about the account in question from Ohtani’s agent, Nez Balelo, telling Balelo that Ohtani wanted the account to be private and unmonitored by his team. Nobody broke down the language firewall between Ohtani and his money people.

  11. Wow, Thursday night must really have been special at the Hollywood Bowl.

    From Los Angeles Magazine:

Farewell to a Pirate: Stars Come Out to Honor Jimmy Buffett

Here's a snippet, but the whole article (not very long) is worth the time.

Harrison Ford and Don Johnson delivered emotional eulogies. Pitbull and Jon Bon Jovi teamed up for a song. Paul McCartney enjoyed a margarita, and Snoop Dogg smoked a blunt “in honor of my main man Jimmy B.”

For more than three hours Thursday night, superstar singers and celebrities entertained a sold out crowd at the Hollywood Bowl as Los Angeles said goodbye to the late Jimmy Buffett.

Happy for Amy; however, I was hoping the 6th would be my new love, Sam, or Brad as I'm a Team Brad fan from waaaay back.

I'm starting to think that it may be Brad who's been opting out of playing. It's very hard to believe that the producers would not have invited him to appear. It's kind of a glaring omission, now two seasons of Jeopardy Masters in a row.

*ANIMATED FILM CHARACTERS - In this 2017 film Dante is a hairless breed known as a Xolo dog (Coco)

Honestly, I was pretty sure I had this one locked down. My first (wrong) idea was, "It won't be as obvious as a Disney animated feature." I thought outside the box, remembered Wes Anderson's Isle of Dogs, and confidently wrote that down. (I'd never seen either Isle of Dogs or Coco.) Also, a quick search yielded the fact that IOD was a 2018 release, a year too late. So much for that!

It was Faces of America, also with Prof. Gates.  The reveal.

I'd forgotten about Faces Of America and had just assumed it was FYR or WDYTYA. Thank you so much for remembering the source of the info and also for linking the video. I'm so happy to be able to watch it again.

Finding those records was remarkable. What a gift!

  15. I can't remember whether it was Finding Your Roots or Who Do You Think You Are?, but several years ago, I remember they were able to trace Yo-Yo Ma's ancestry back thousands of years. The book of his family's history had been hidden deep inside the walls of their house during the Cultural Revolution. Millions of families in China had all their family histories destroyed during Mao's regime. It was miraculous that they were able to find it. I sat there crying while I was watching. I love Yo-Yo Ma and yes, I'm a softie.

I really enjoyed this week's episode, especially the last woman's history and her reaction. I also liked that this week they told each story individually. It annoys me when they bounce back and forth between the two (or occasionally three) celebrity stories.

Although truthfully, I'm no fan of James either. Victoria vs James could be quite a sight to see, though.

I'm happy to see the final slot go to Amy, even though I had been hoping that Buzzy would have been allowed to complete. The last we'd heard from the producers was, "You never know" a couple of years back. They seemed to be keeping the door open just a little bit.

  17. Week 31:  0/5.

I'm disappointed because, as many here have mentioned, I've been doing very well in and DJ since tournament play ended. I've run several categories and have gotten many more TS than I have in these past several months. Then again, there have been way more TS in the past three days than there have been during the various tournaments.

No matter. My resurgence evidently is for the first two rounds only. For FJ, the drought continues.

Broadcaster Robert MacNeil who co-founded and co-hosted The MacNeil/Lehrer Report with fellow journalist Tom Lehrer which went on to become The PBS News Hour has died, age 93.

Robert MacNeil's is a life much more worth celebrating than the other one dominating the conversation all over again. His was a life lived to insure the much needed dissemination of the truth. His type of journalism is in very short supply in today's world. May he rest in peace with the knowledge of a job well done. Thank you, sir.

  19. I'm starting to wonder if Michelle is wearing an invisibility cloak, with all these comments about no one standing out. I completely agree that Rasika is on a hot streak right now, with two EC wins and one QF win. She's the frontrunner right now, early in this season.

But, Michelle has an EC win and was also  top three in the difficult Hops QF, where Danny was bottom three. And, Laura won that QF.

If I were ranking potential finalists right now, and truthfully, I think it's too early to be counting chickens, I'd say: 1) Rasika, 2) Michelle and 3) Danny. If I were to pick a couple of long shots, I'd put a small wager on Laura and Savannah.

TL, DR: I'm not ready to give the TC title to Rasika yet.
