Well deserved nomination. Even better, of course, would be a win!!

    https://deadline.com/2024/04/2024-peabody-awards-nominations-list-1235892057/

The show won a Peabody in 2022. I was of the evidently incorrect impression, that the Peabody was a one-and-done. This additional nomination for the final season is a very pleasant surprise!

Here's the info on their original win in '22 from THR:

Ok, Amy drives me a bit crazy. Way too slow picking categories. Her affect is weird. (So not like most doctors I know.) I was hoping the guy in the middle would win.

I agree with you about Amy. FOUR clues left on the board! She has to speed it up.

Tyler, the guy in the middle, was fine until he pulled a "Bring it!" That's my new instant disqualifier. The producers need to tell the contestants to knock it off.

On the other hand, the producers must have stopped telling contestants to read the full category name every single time. I noticed it was starting to fall by the wayside in the later tournaments. Now, it seems as if regular contestants are not reading the full category names after the first call either. I hope that means the producers have decided to let that go.

  3. New, from Reuters:

McKinsey faces US criminal probe over opioids work, sources say

McKinsey & Co is under criminal investigation in the United States over allegations that the consulting firm played a key role in fueling the opioid epidemic, with federal prosecutors homing in on its work advising OxyContin maker Purdue Pharma and other drugmakers, three people familiar with the matter said.

    ...

The Justice Department is also investigating whether McKinsey conspired to commit healthcare fraud when its consulting work for companies selling opioids allegedly resulted in fraudulent claims being made to government programs such as Medicare, they said.

Prosecutors are also looking at whether McKinsey obstructed justice, an inquiry related to McKinsey's disclosure that it had fired two partners who communicated about deleting documents related to their opioids work, the people said.

    ...

It carries higher stakes than other government investigations McKinsey has resolved because of the potential for criminal charges against the company or executives, and steep financial penalties that the Justice Department often demands in exchange for resolving its white-collar probes.

For all you Yankee fans (and subscribers to The Athletic since I can't figure out how to share this - sorry):

Bernie Williams will play with the NY Philharmonic this week

I am thrilled for Bernie, who is far and away my all-time favorite Yankee. What an honor for a great musician! I only wish I could read the full article. 😪 Perhaps the YES Network will give this some coverage that will show up on their YouTube channel. 🤞

I hadn't heard about this, so thanks for sharing!

  6. For any other out-of-market Yankees' fans like me, MLB has posted the full retirement ceremony for John Sterling on their YouTube channel.

I have seen it suggested in other forums that having a ringer come barnstorming out of LCK seems like a reference to Kristen and would obviously be even moreso should he win. I hope that TC would not resort to such an obvious attempt at a planned narrative but given the overall mediocrity of this James Beard-nominee heavy crowd, it's hard to shake.  It would be one way to make sure the first post-Padma season clearly has put Padma in the rearview mirror by making it so much about Kristen and her history.

My main issue with any online speculation about this being some type of homage to Kristen's Top Chef  journey is that Kristen was not a producer-created ringer! She won her season legitimately. She just happened to do it by returning fron LCK and being the first person to do that. I have no problem with a chef coming back from LCK to win. That's organic; but this whole idea that Soo is "Contestant #16" only his competition began in LCK is absolute BS, in my opinion. I'm fine with the other changes in the "we're going to shake things up" department, but this doesn't sit well at all. Also, this bad look was compounded by the whole "What happened to David the Hat Guy and why isn't he competing in LCK?" situation. It all just smells funny.

I like Soo and he certainly seems to be a chef that will be a contender for the title. He seems stronger than at least half of the remaining chefs in the main competition, but if he goes on to win, I think it will always seem as if there needs to be an asterisk after his name.

  8. IMO, the only acceptable answer is Harley Quinn as the clue was specifically looking for the character.

There's something of a Harley Quinn renaissance that's been happening over the past few years.

Harley is currently being played in the DC Cinematic Universe by Margot Robbie, who's terrific in the role. She has appeared as Harley Quinn in three DC films, Suicide Squad (great supporting performance in a disappointing movie), Birds of Prey, where Harley Quinn is the main character leading a group of kick-ass women DC characters, and The Suicide Squad, a completely different and very funny film directed by James Gunn.

The character is also currently being brilliantly voice-acted by Kaley Cuoco in the animated Harley Quinn television series streaming on MAX. It's absolutely hilarious and definitely NOT for children!

And that ends this nerd-hosted session of Comics 101.

I also am over her opening performance of head shaking and disbelief when she is introduced daily.

This. One time was believable and acceptable. Now, it's phony humility. Also, she's doing Sam's "Bring it" each time the last clue is hers. Stop it!

I don't dislike her. There are many contestants who bug me more, but she's not on my favorites list.

    Just my opinion.

They're not handling these budget issues very well, as presented -- it's like whichever chef happened to put their ingredients up last has to completely change course instead of everyone having to take some things off the bill.

    Not cool.

Oh good. I'm feeling better about Michelle's cook.

Me, too! That was a nice surprise.

I hope we're being misled, but I'm afraid Michelle is getting the loser's edit.

Right now I'm seeing a nice dinner...pasta, salad*, and garlic knots.

I thought of you this evening. I had lovely fresh-made (purchased; I didn't make the pasta myself) ravioli for dinner. I was extra careful when bringing the plates from the kitchen to the table, remembering your ravioli disaster from last week!

And now back to Billy Joel at Madison Square Garden. He's still got it.

I was looking for a place on the forums where we could talk about it while it's airing, but there doesn't seem to be a place for it anymore.

Yes, Billy's still got it! I honestly can't get over the range he still has at 75!
