  1. While I agree with your overall point, I've got some problems with your examples.  Namely:

Though I thought Jamar Rogers was the 2nd best contestant in Season 2, I thought Juliet Sims was the best and fully deserved to go to the final.  To me the real travesty that season was that only one of the two of them was allowed to advance (hence the rule change beginning in Season 3).  Needless to say I was also disappointed that Juliet then lost out to Jermaine.  While I don't dispute that he had a better performance in the final itself (in part because she had a bad cold), I thought her body of work over the season was far superior to Jermaine's (as was Jamar's for that matter).

Amanda Brown is also one of my all time favorite voice contestants, but I can't really blame CeeLo too much for matching her up with Trevin in the battles given that she showed so little of her potential during her rather lackluster blind audition.

I agreed with Pharrell in taking Sugar over Elijah Rene.  He had a decent voice, but I found his performances to be almost unwatchable.  Plus, I guess I'm one of the few who actually liked that growl in Sugar's voice.  I certainly liked her Playoff performance better than Elijah's and felt it well deserved the standing ovation she got from all 4 coaches.

I do think that Usher is perhaps the best coach this show has ever had and I really hope he comes back in some future season.

Then CeeLo should have gone 50/50 on his choice and let America decide.  But in answer to the original post, he threw the African American candidate under the bus.  Edited to add:  I'm not sure that it was his brain that CeeLo was thinking with at the time!

  2. @Noreaster, Damien is, like, Adam's only black success story.  Nearly every other one he's dumped at the first opportunity.  Kelli, Toia, and Ethan all say hi, in fact.  As for those others you mentioned, I'm pretty sure everyone was referring to his past black contestants, not minorities, in general.  And no, the other coaches haven't been stellar with black contestants, either, save for, well, the other black coaches, but that doesn't give Adam a pass for the exactly ONE African-American contestant he has gotten to a finale.

Also, "weirdly?"  His pitches are always all over the place.  It's like he's so desperate just to beat out another coach that he'll say anything, and so far, I've seen more contestants cottoning to him and choosing anyone else who turns for them

I'll have to disagree with you here.  In S2, Jamar Rogers was lined up to win the whole thing--the voting results sure seemed to be heading in that direction--until CeeLo shockingly threw him under the bus to advance Juliet Sims.  That wasn't even a sneaky busing a la Adam consistently giving people poor songs to sing; this was back when the judges had to give a specific percentage of their vote to a contestant in the semi-finals!  That awful move may well have changed the entire tenor of the show as Blake probably doesn't get the first of his three consecutive wins that season.  Also, while not quite as glaring, CeeLo should never have pitted Amanda Brown against Trevin Hunte in the Battle Rounds.  (I'm completely biased here.  Amanda is my absolute favorite Voice contestant ever.)  Thank goodness that the steal was in effect then as all three of the remaining coaches pushed their button for her.  Then, moving to last season, Pharrell saved Sugar Joans over Elijuh Rene!  That move can't be defended, made no sense at all!  I'm not sure which coach I'd guide black contestants to choose.  Off the top of my head, I'm not recalling any blatant mishandling on Usher's teams during his two Voice seasons.  I thought he did a great job with all of his contestants and he was a quick study.  He learned how to play the game well enough to win it all in his second attempt after coming in at #2 on his very first try.  When are we going to get another Usher season anyway?  I'd sign up for that!

  3. I think India will be my favorite this year. I would love to see Christina win with her, if that's even possible.

I don't see why it wouldn't be possible. Christina coached Jacquie Lee all the way to the runner up slot and IMO India is much more talented than JL is. What JL had going for her was that unlike many contestants, she listened to what Christina told her to do. She was completely coachable. Whether India, who is already well trained musically will listen to and act on Christina's advice remains to be seen. While I'm not a big Aguilera fan, I do respect her talent and her years of experience in the business. I can't believe I'm saying this after living through her previous seasons of bitchiness and phoniness on The Voice, but I'd be pleased to see her join the winner's circle.

  4. This whole episode demonstrates why there needs to be a person of color in the writing rooms on all these shows. We could easily avoid these types of incidents if there were someone with a different perspective to point out, that what's humorous to the majority group may be less so to minority groups, including sexual orientation. Just a thought.

Your suggestion is a good one and I'd take it a bit further.  They should take this opportunity and put a person of color on the Fashion Police panel.

  5.

However, we couldn't get a few more of the handsome guys, none of the Chrises? Just JK and Jared Leto?

Yes, I was disappointed that they only commented on the men's apparel that they disliked.  How about some of the guys who looked great?  For one, I thought Benedict Cumberbatch looked fantastic in his white dinner jacket.   Eddie Redmayne looked great in his blue tux also.

What I'm seeing is that they seem to be concentrating more on comedy and less on fashion than they used to.  I'm not crazy about that.  I love to laugh at the outrageous get-ups but I also like to see the great praised.

    Edited for punctuation.

I kind of wish the Oscar show would be 90 minutes. So many dresses.

I totally agree with you on this point.  I feel like there were way too many dresses that weren't shown/mentioned.  Just off the top of my head:  Viola Davis looked wonderful I would like to have heard comments on her gown.  Jessica Chastain, whom I usually love on the carpet, had a gown with a horrible neckline IMO.  Naomi Watts, who is usually stunning, just missed.  Other nominees who were not featured:  Felicity Jones, Reese Witherspoon, Keira Knightly, Laura Dern.  How about Anna Kendrick, Anna Faris, Sienna Miller?  It just seems to me that FP used to feature more of the looks on the carpet.  :(

I'm the one upthread who said that I missed George and while that is still true, I do think that Brad was very good on tonight's FP.  He was very informative on the fashion but also funny.  The whole panel had me laughing out loud several times tonight; always a good thing!  Also, I loved Kathy's dress.

  7. Do they still show cartoons at the movies?

"Feast", the animated short that just won the Oscar was shown at theaters along with "Big Hero 6"

Well, Big Hero 6 won and that's technically a superhero movie.

And a Marvel connection. Heck, animated Stan Lee appeared in the coda!

As to Patricia Arquette getting "political" in her acceptance speech: Oscar presentations in the 1960s and 1970s were full of award recipients making political statements.

  8. Rosamund Pike taking the honors on the red carpet. So far.

I get that it is her moment right now, but watching Dakota Johnson on the red carpet really makes me wonder what the fuss is about.

And to be mean for second, I find it incredible how mousy looking she is. Especially when you consider her mother is Melanie Griffith and her grandmother is Tippi Hedren. Dakota must take after her dad's side of the family.

I just have to take exception to your last sentence because in his prime, Don Johnson was one of the best looking men on the planet!

  9. We only have Mei's words about her parents feelings, filtered through her own. Maybe she's blown it up in her mind to more than it is. We did see that she isn't close to her brother, either, so I'm willing to give her parents the benefit of the doubt.

    This is a possibility.

Also posssible: The editors found the story they wanted to tell about Mei and milked it for all it was worth, editing her accordingly. We viewers see what they want us to see.

Although I wanted Doug to win, I'm very pleased for Mei. She's a very worthy winner and it's great that there are now three femaleTop Chefs!

  10. For me, after watching Top Chef for years I knew that Doug was going to be in the finale just based on the make-up of the final 4. If push comes to shove and the dishes are pretty equal, Tom will pick the white guy over any other contestant (gender or race). It happens over and over again. So, I am preparing myself for a Doug win. Personally, I would have sent Gregory home. He fell apart towards the end of the season which was more egregious than Melissa coasting until the finale.

Also, not surprised that Doug got the easiest artist to work with. Always a thumb on the scale for the white guy on TC.

Believe me, I'm far from the biggest fan of Tom Colicchio, but I think this is an unfair assessment.  We're presently in S12 of Top Chef and 2 of the final 3 chefs still standing are non-white and one of those is female.  In the 11 prior TC seasons we have seen four victories by persons of color (Hung, Kevin, Paul, Kristen) and an additional win by a white female (Stephanie) meaning that 45% of the TC winners to date have not been white guys.

  11. I've actually been enjoying the bulk of the Auditions' episodes this season but last night's was just about unwatchable.  The one thing I really loved was when they went out to get the family of the young man with the ukulele.  The family saw his Golden Ticket and didn't even look at the judges.  They were just genuinely thrilled for him.  Heartwarming.

  12. http://comicbook.com/2015/01/28/agent-carters-dottie-revealed-as-a-black-widow/

Today, Marvel revealed that Dottie is a member of the Black Widow Program, the same Soviet program that turned Natasha Romanov into The Avengers’ Black Widow in the modern day Marvel Cinematic Universe.  But the producers clarified that Dottie’s training, while from the KGB, isn’t from a specific “Black Widow” program—yet. Butters said that Dottie’s program will most likely evolve in the Black Widow program, much like the SSR will eventually turn into S.H.I.E.L.D.
